35 screen captures from 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957) [Sony - US Region ABC]

The colorized and original B&W versions are presented as alternate angles on the disc so you can flip back and forth during playback (which is a nice feature). I went ahead and made matching shots from the two versions.

There appears to be chroma aliasing on the colorized version, but both look pretty remarkable. Contrast is PERFECT!

Yeah, there's some pretty weird stuff here and there, like Joan Taylor's hairline in this shot:
http://media.cinemasquid.com/blu-ray...hot-lrg-21.png

There were also some instances where the background colors intruded on a foreground object, where motion seemed to have disabled the colorization process altogether leaving black-and-white streaks, many times where some comb-like artifacts have been introduced, and instances where men have a disturbing impression of wearing heavy lipstick, much of which I probably did not properly represent in those few shots, but overall I really liked the way the colorization was handled. I'm not sure how the process works exactly, but I was quite impressed by things like the blue skies that seem to have perfect grain preservation between the two versions. The framing is also a bit different through a number of scenes, for whatever reason.

Obviously, I'm really late to the game in looking at these (along with Earth vs. the Flying Saucers and It Came from the Sea which I haven't yet seen on BD), but I thought it might be nice to put up more shots.

35 screen captures from The Mist (2007) [Weinstein - US Region ABC]

I've included matching shots from color version on disc 1 and the B&W on disc 2 of the set.

Bizarre encoding job by the compression engineers. It doesn't feature a single B frame?!

Yeah, I forgot to mention that when I made the specs post. Fox has done this before on at least a couple of titles (ex. Machete) and Warner's Sherlock Holmes had only a handful.

A frame that uses both previous and future frames as reference for motion-compensated compression, and usually the most heavily compressed. Wikipedia has a decent article on the subject:

What does it effectively mean? That it takes up more space? Is it something you can tell while watching the film?

Encoding without B frames is far less bit efficient. There is arguably no reason NOT to use B frames when encoding for Blu-ray. The quality should improve because of the bit savings from using B frames in the first place.

Not to mention she was portraying the life of someone in a profession that pushes abnormal rigors on the body.

As ChuckZ said, the average frame might take up more space than usual since interspersing highly-compressed B-frames is more than half the point of MPEG-2 and its successors AVC and VC-1 (edit: although this could be counterbalanced by heavier spatial compression of the I- and P- frames and the P-frames are still also temporally compressed, but only in reference to previous frames). However, I honestly don't know enough about the encoding end of things to say exactly why not using B-frames might be a effective strategy for certain content - unless every frame was absolutely unique and radically different from its neighbors, thus leveraging frame differences would not contribute to compression efficiency.

In any case, I very much doubt it has any visible effect on what you see while watching the film in motion, so it is more of an interesting curiosity for the specs-curious.
