Dead Man with Johnny Depp is probably my favorite Jarmusch film. Amazing soundtrack by Neil Young.

Love Ghost Dog too (had that on D-Theater tape!)

I can do without Broken Flowers.

Jarmusch actually gets most of his funding from Europe (and Japan).

Wow, that's ridiculously sharp. Probably the most detailed image I've ever seen. No info on what camera(s) used on IMDB unfortunately. 2.00:1 AR though so I'm guessing RED. If that's the quality they're putting out now they've come a long way since the mushy images of Che made with a prototype model.

I believe that it was indeed shot on RED cameras. The image quality is not always consistent and shadow detail can sometimes be problematic in dark scenes, but there are a number of shots that are astonishingly detailed - e.g. on the car ferry, at the cemetery, etc.

I was going to say the same thing, those are probably some of the most impressive screen grabs I've seen.

I just put this in my queue.

I've briefly messed around with the Red software (its a free download from their site, you can find some 4k RAWs floating around online) in its various iterations and the 4K output always seems to be kind of soft. I think the de-Bayering algorithm applies a strong low-pass filter for some reason. And then you've still got to scale that to 1080p.

the fast 2k output (which presumably doesn't interpolate the bayer-sensor output, but dumps each 2x2 RGB pixel block into one pixel) produces really sharp images: http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/8104/lake2k.jpg

Very interesting stuff! Sounds like you know a bit about digital images. The whole bayer sensor and the low pass filtering issues are the subject of much debate on various photography forums.

Wow, that's bizarre and a bit ass-backwards to filter 4K video down to lower than 2K quality. No wonder all the shot-on-RED blus I've seen looked so smooth and didn't impress me much detail wise (compared to Sonys or Panasonic cameras). I assumed they were all noise filtered in post.

Wow no kidding. I wonder how it looks in motion though, seems like it would look more "video-like" than most. (You know what I mean.)

I did not find it to be excessively "video-like" in presentation overall, although some already mentioned scenes did jump out at me as being exceptionally highly detailed. However, I am not opposed to the video look as a matter of principle, so perhaps I am not giving the most unbiased evaluation.

Definitely an interesting film - though it's mostly a quiet drama, there are a few what-the-f&!k jump scares interspersed and some unresolved supernatural aspects to disrupt your equilibrium which I appreciated, since the typically overwrought straight-up plain drama format usually leaves me cold.

Red has new sensor named MX but they r still lack of enough dof and dynamic range..
Wait for Arri's new toy ALEXA (Roger Deakins tested and wrote many positive comments about it)

35 screen captures from The Way of the Gun (2000) [Lionsgate - US Region ABC].

35 screen captures from The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) [Sony - US Region A].

I suppose it's worth noting that The Other Boleyn Girl is a "do-over" for me to correct the colorspace problems from my original captures and also to add some new caps. I still think it has a great look for something shot on video, and it's almost impossible to complain about the superhero teamup of Portman and Johansson.

Oh my god, that looks incredible! And none of this Disney revisionism to remove all texture. But the price... Yikes!

Giger, may I ask where you got the extended Millennium trilogy on Bluray from? I'm waiting to buy the films but I want the extended versions. Didn't realize they were available somewhere so if I can import them I would. Just wondering where you got them from. Thanks.

The disc also has to be decrypted. I think AnyDVD is the only game in town for that.
