We have patiently waited long enough. Twentieth Century Fox, you need to reassure us your commitment with blu-ray. I hope you announce something by the end of the week.

If ever Fox needed to step up and show their commitment to BD, even if it's to announce titles months away from release, it is now.

XA1 + PS3 = HD bliss

In light of the Paramount announcement today they should realy get back in the game and announce their plans for Blu-Ray.

It won't make a difference. The consumer won't be buying in.... Paramount shot itself in the foot and killed high definition pre-packaged media.

No seriously, as far as regular consumers go, they did.

Whether HD DVD supporters want to admit it or not, the news was pretty pro-Blu over the past few months; the new announcement will just confuse the market further and most will vote with their dollars by deciding it's too early to jump into the market after all.

Thinking just for the average family, what parent is going to be able to make a decision between Pixar films and Shrek?

Better to just buy the SD DVD and wait for a winner in the HD format war.

calm the F down people.

If yur a fan of HD optical than support it. If you still want to support BR support it. Don't go chicken little because things aren't rosey 100%. and if this ends up spelling doom for BR - I encourage all of you to eat some humble pie with me and support HD media.

The way I see it, Paramount just bank-rolled $150 million (pretty good). HD-DVD got a serious exclusive studio. HD-DVD not only got an exclusive, they removed a neutral that was supporting Blu-Ray.

Consumers get cheap players, lots of movie choices, and good video/audio. They also get to see some seriously positive HD-DVD press.

Seems like everyone won today, except blu-ray only supporters. I'm glad I'm neutral

Fox should raise the white flag(or blue flag) and go neutral.

I mentioned this unbelievable news to a co-worker of mine. His response "That's even more reason for me to wait this out". So you may have a point. Paramount is hurting HD adoption by prolonging the war.

Paramount took a huge payoff. If that ends up destroying mass adoption of HD discs I will never forgive them.

And as others have stated. I will never get pushed into buying another piece of Toshiba hardware. Not after being sold a pile of trash XA1 for a 1 thousand dollars.

I have always stated that content is king and I still believe that. So I do believe this changes things. How much is yet to be seen. If I'm forced back into HD-DVD in the future, someone besides Toshiba better come out with a player.

Be careful what you wish for as you might get Minority Report (Dreamworks and FOX) or some other Dreamworks/Fox pairing announced on HD-DVD!

One thing I'm not clear on is the whole "Steven Spielberg" bit where he is 100% Blu Ray. Maybe his own movies, but with Transformers that throws the other theories out the window, right?

Wow. Interesting day indeed. I'm glad I'm settling down and in both camps, but wow, just wow.

All studios should go neutral for even playing ground and let the sales numbers speak for themselves.

HDD is up again. Just in case it crash again, here is the jist of Fox announcement. Expect details later today.

Quote:

After months of silence, Fox Home Entertainment is planning to issue an announcement later today renewing its support for the Blu-ray format, and outlining the studio's upcoming release plans.

The move comes after this morning's shocking revelation that Paramount and DreamWorks have switched allegiances exclusively to rival HD DVD, news which has left those on all sides of the format war blind-sided.

I just wonder how long they will last this time. How long before BD+ gets cracked?

Spielberg has never said he is 100% Blu-ray. Some Blu-ray backers have inferred this from the simple fact that Close Encounters is coming out on Blu-ray. But that doesn't mean he is anti-HD-DVD or is 100 percent Blu-ray.

The spin in this format war is out of control.

Oh I hear ya! I only said that line as that, IIRC, was the title thread when Close Encounters was announced. But yet now we see Spielberg's company go HD-DVD. Kind of sounds odd right? And with Transformers, which is produced by him, is now HD-DVD only. I was scratching my head going, okay, so only his directed movies are blu ray? And his productions are whatever?

What's next, Lionsgate? They already have a sweet little deal with Microsoft on their marketplace. And now so does Disney. I wonder if Microsoft might tip their dollars a certain direction now that they have 2 legs (read: exclusive big companies backing HD-DVD) to stand on along with their HD-DVD add-on which is doing nicely again.

What a crazy day and curveball thrown today!

We've yet to see how much the Paramount news will even help HD DVD. From the sounds of it, Spielberg's flicks will still be on Blu-ray (or both), and Paramount's only mentioned 3 of quite a few titles they've had on slate (Top Gun, for instance) as part of the exclusitivity. The HD DVD fans may be jumping for joy right now, but we all have yet to see what it actually means. However, I'd still be damn shocked to see even ONE new Fox release this year...

Give what a rest I'm starting to believe this is a real possibility with todays Para/DW announcement it sure isn't helping end the format war or help J6P jump in anytime soon.
