News today; what does it mean for discs? https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/m...ts/011520-1000

I'm not specifically in love with the disc physical format; all I do is rip them to MKV files on my hard drive. What concerns me is that if discs for away there may be no way to acquire legal copies of non DRMed versions of the shows to store locally. I stream a lot but prefer local viewing when possible, and enjoy going frame by frame through action sequences which you cant do while steaming. There is also a quality difference of course.

Netflix = best video. The previews sound better than the actual movies.
Prime Video = best audio. Their 4K is starting to catch up to Netflix's 4K. Netflix HDR kills them all!
I'm really disappointed with HBO Go audio.

That may change after Disney moves Hulu over to it's bamtech platform, the same as what used for Disney +. They haven't done it yet.

I guess if Elon Musk makes $2.3B in 60 minutes, then $180M in 12 months is a drop in the bucket.

Netflix DVD, audio format for Blurays: It Chapter 2, Avenger's Endgame, and Joker

I just renewed my Netflix DVD for 2 Blurays out at a time. I built a new que. All the movies, except three, in my que indicate lossless audio, mostly DTS-HD but three movies only indicate Dolby Digital: 1) It Chapter Two, 2) Avengers: Endgame and 3) Joker.

I have had blurays from Netflix DVD that indicated only Dolby Digital in the details for them but that did have a lossless format on the disc, so the details can be wrong. I would like to get any to all of those three movies if they have a lossless audio format, otherwise I'll try to get them at Red Box, since its movie almost always have lossless even when Netflix DVD does not, or just buy them.

Would anyone confirm if any of those three, in Bluray, have or do not have a lossless audio format from Netflix DVD?

I don't think any BD will not have DTS-MA or Dolby TrueHD on it, unless it's something like an older TV show or similar. That said, I have had some default to a lower setting like DTS-HR, and had to manually select the DTA-MA.

Over the last fourteen years I've purchased some 2k BDs without lossless audio. They have either DD, DD+, DTS, or DTS-HD HR. All lossy formats. And of course many of my early BD purchases, in 2006 to 2008, had multi-channel PCM audio instead of compressed lossless audio tracks. Like Dolby True HD or DTS-HD MA.

I got the bluray Joker, from Netflix, today. Starting to watch it now. Dolby Atmos is an Audio Option. The other option is Dolby DIgital so I am not sure if it has any non-Atmos lossless formats. I would think it would show it as an option if so.

My purchased 2-disk Blu Ray set had a glorious Dolby Atmos soundtrack / Dolby TrueHD 7.1 .. it was excellent in all respects ..

As an amusing side note, the DVD "Fire In The Sky" is a new release coming soon. It's a 1993 movie that I rented on DVD from Netflix (and rated as 3 stars) years ago. Interesting to see it in the "new releases" section...
