English track quieter

Hi, I've just picked up a hd dvd player and about 50 discs, as I was always curious about the format, and generally it seems to be as good as blu ray. One strange thing though. I've played 8 discs so far, and on most of them the volume is a little quiet relative to blurays. But if I flick to the foreign language soundtracks, they are substantially louder! On my receiver volume there's about 7db difference. Obviously I'm not changing any settings. Anyone know why this is? It's like it was the standard practice - but it makes no sense to me!

The non-English soundtracks are often old AC-3 soundtracks taken straight from the original DVD's. Although there's nothing about the AC-3 format that would make them inherently louder, it was more common to level-compress audio back then since more people were watching DVDs on small televisions. Audio tracks that were remastered for HD-DVD and Blu-ray often have more dynamic range.
