Happy Feet is less than 15 GBs! Thats impressive for a Tier 0 title with a TrueHD track. It's not a very short movie either, 1 hour and 48 minutes. Some one posted last year that they have no doubt a Tier 0 title will be available on a 15 GB disc in 2007, they were right kudos to whoever that was.

Edit: According to Highdefdigest Happy Feet is on a 30 GB disc, which makes me wonder if it is less than 15 GBs

Thanks to House:

The Making Of is split into five files. All MPEG2, DD2.0 192Kbit/s, added up; 7.62GB. The feature itself is 17.1GB, VC1 (of course) and 1.5Mbit/s DD+5.1.

The only other thing of any consequence is the Intro by Peter Jackson which is 336MB. There's a trailer as well but it's like 90MB. Everything else is standard HD junk like menu loop, FBI intro, Universal intro, blah blah blah.

Total disc is 25.7GB or 27,640,059,904 bytes.

I don't have the movie, and nobody volunteered the size.

15 GiB is actually over 16 000 000 000 bytes (16 GB).

HD15 discs are about 15 000 000 000 bytes (15 GB), which is actually only 13.97 GiB (since 1 GiB = 1.073741824 GB).

Err, last I checked Windows Media Player cannot play HD DVDs.

There needs to be a unified standard, lol either way Happy Feet is an impressive title.

Here are a few more that I have recently checked:

Babel (US) 28,702,015,488
Blood Diamond (US) 23,873,716,224
The Departed (US) 23,848,943,616
(yep, those are the very same movies that were supposedly "mastered to HD-DVD standards" according to some of our blu friends; instead they seem to be mastered to BD25, which is incidentally the format that the German Bluray version of "The Departed" was released on )

A couple German discs:
The Prestige (German) 23,886,757,888
Flags of Our Fathers (German) Side A: 26,411,532,288, Side B: 7,744,126,976

BTW, the German "Flags" is actually a double-sided HD-DVD (the first ever, I believe) and not an HD-DVD/DVD Combo.

>>Yes, in that case, the 5.1 or 7.1 TrueHD tracks are simply and correctly downmixed to 2.0 stereo. And I'm sure Dolby was aware that players must only decode two-channel TrueHD.>>

Dolby True-HD is just MLP in a new 'wrapper' with some more features - anyway, it stores a completely seperate 2.0 mix that a 2-channel only player can access without having to decode any of the other channels. The 2.0 mix can either be created by the True-HD encoder or it can be a completely seperate 2-channel mix. The reason for that is so players don't have to have the extra complexity to decode all the channels to output just 2 channels... it's 'lossless matrixing' and even in True-HD has the 'rosetta stone' set so that the decoder can guarantee a 100% lossless decode.

Hello, thanks for this informative thread. Do the sizes listed refer to the movie itself, or the entire disc (i.e., movie, extra footage, interviews, other extras, etc)?

Thanks.

Since Serenity and Swordfish are two of the smallest (in terms of GB's used) on that list...and they also are two of the better looking/sounding titles that I've watched...I guess that means that size really isn't everything.

If you have Nereo installed use Nero Info Tool. With an Xbox HD DVD dirve connected run Nero Info Tool. Put disc you want to check in HD drive. Select drive. Select disc button. This will tell you the disc size, number of layers on the
disc. It will also tell you if the disc is coppied protected.
