Hate to be pessimistic but I have a feeling all those transfers are gonna be crappy if other unversial releases are any indication.

And if the transfers aren't, the movies will be...with Mallrats being the exception of course.

I keep meaning to ask this, so you're the victim.
How do you know if a transfer is bad?

Different tastes I guess, but Mystery Men is one the the funniest movies I've ever seen. I'll be grabbing this one.

I wonder if Universal will convert the video commentary on the original Mallrats DVD into an IME-type feature.

Mystery men is a good transfer. Yea
The other two edge city. Bulletproof is not as bad but Mallrats on my system is pretty bad. I do not understand what gives with Universal. Someone is sitting with the sharpness joy stick at 10. It takes away from that film look and looks like video. MRs reminds me of VHS because it is so over processed. I think I am done buying Universal until I read some reports here first.
Remember Im at 8 feet wide. Those with smaller flat panels may see this sharpness as a positive thing.
MM looks dam good though.

I do not want to discourage anyone from checking out Mallrats. It may look fine on another system however going from MM right to MR you can clearly see the difference.
I do look forward to hearing from others your opinion.

Chances are they used the DVD master elements for the transfer meaning the original video master that was done many years ago which is also why you have Dolby Digital Plus tracks on these.

I don't know how expansive your collection is, but what is another movie on HD-DVD that you would place, quality-wise, right next to Mallrats? My Mallrats dvd doesn't seem to upscale well, but if it will look exactly the same, as much as I love that movie (it's in my top 10) I will pass in favor of something else.

Unfortunately, there are 100 people against you that want everything to look like Crank. The studios can't win.

Spent some more time with these titles. I think Mallrat will look good on a smaller display. Its a little to edgy for myself but its clean with some nice colors. I would say its on par with Army of Darkness but the edginess is more consistent on Mallrat.
Mystery Man looks really good. Clearly the best of the three.

To confirm Mallrats does not include the extended edition? I thought I saw 1 hr 36 min on run time on your box, ext was over 2 hours. If so I wonder what is up with HiDef not including extended editions of movies, although BD is more the offender in this category up till this point (A Knight's Tale, Ultraviolet). Makes me scared for The Lord of the Rings when it comes out, that's one of the only movies I can honestly saw the longer version was def. improvement.

That's very simple to answer.

They are setting you up for the double-dip. That's what.

You can bet your ass LOTR will be released in Theatrical, AND Extended versions.. at different times. I'm betting the theatrical will come first.

I wouldn't think Mallrats would have been shot with high quality film stock to begin with. I realize that this was Mr. Smiths first movie with a big studio behind it but I would still think the film stock used wouldn't be very good. I remember seeing this in the theatre back then along with the other 3 who saw it and it really didn't look very good. I love this movie and will let you know what I think of the transfer.

Yeah no kidding. I was hoping this format war would at least get us away from the double dip with these movie studios wanting the best quality stuff out first for competition sake.

I'm glad it's not the extended version. The extended Mallrats is horrible, in my opinion. I think I remember Kevin Smith saying it wasn't his preferred cut of the film as well somewhere, though I can't remember.

I just remember the extended stuff being really boring. The whole first act of the movie doesn't have anything to do with the mall!

MM looks dam good though.

The very same thing happened with "40year old virgin" - overly processed "video look" with unbelievable amounts of EE (just look at the opening credits...).

Why is it so hard for Universal to release titles JUST on HD-DVD IF they have a rather decent master at their disposal - or better yet REMASTER the movies before relasing them on HD-DVD. Recycling their old master tapes ("made for DVD release") isn't going to make them and HD-DVD as a format very popular...

Alan,

Received my Mallrats, Mystery Men, and Lebowski this morning - Mallrats and Lebowski both have noticeable EE, like you say, MM is a bit more natural. The change was fairly obvious switching between discs. I'm also curious as to why Universal feel the need to crank the dial on certain titles.

I have talked to a few people behind the seen in the industry and when asked about the EE they say what EE Ive never seen it With mentality like that ( they must be watching on 12" monitors ) do not expect any changes for the better .

I watched MM last night. Looked great. What a fun movie. Colorful to !

It's too bad that Universal seems more concerned about just pumping out titles with whichever masters they already have so they can say, "we have released "X" amount titles." I'd rather a studio focus on the quality of video even if that means releasing titles more slowly.

I agree. I thought thats thats what HD is suppose to be all about, superior PQ !
Ive been happy with the other studios but Universal unfortunately has set a pour track record.

Universal needs to slow down with some of their releases. These newer transfers aren't as good as they used to be.
