On a similar note, I snagged an Oppo DV-980-H on Ebay last year for $65 plus shipping. I love it. I use it for audio onlt in my 2 channel set up. I got it to get into SACDs and as a bonus found out that some of my old CDs also have HDCD layers. I think I may like the HDCD even better than SACD. I also like the USB port for playing files from my PC.

I wanted to snag another one; but apparently the word is out that tis is a great little bit of gear and the bidding on Ebay is getting too high since I only paid $85 total for mine. Haven't found a Sony or other quality model with a USB port and analog audio out.

Anyone have any suggestions for a bargain hunter? $900 for the Sony XA5400ES is too rich for where I am going to use it and I don't see a USB port in the features.

Thrift stores/pawn shops in your area might have something. I've gotten lucky with electronics by going through those before.

well, good thing I did NOT listen any of the above people who ask me to buy this piece of junk called Oppo.

I have the same problem as those people in stereophile, the only difference is, I didn't pay for the Oppo player, I borrow it.

Just like those people, no matter what you do, Oppo doesn't play SACD. There is no sound. After wasting hours on different setting, it just won't play SACD.

This brand Oppo is a joke.

Are you using hdmi or optical/coax for digital audio out?

From page 34 in the manual:

Quote:

Symptom:
No sound

Possible Cause:
DVD-Audio or SACD is played
and the audio connection is
coaxial or optical digital audio

Solution
This is not supported due to copyright restrictions of
DVD-Audio and SACD. Please use the analogue 5.1-
channel audio output.

Due to copyright restrictions, no consumer player will output the multichannel layer except over hdmi or analog.

I am using Co-ax. I mean, if that's the case, then I should buy a SACD player that c/w Co-ax and that would solve all the problem

Sorry, I don't know what you mean by "c/w" ("comes with?).

You will not get the SACD layer to play digitally over optical or coax on any player that I know of. Your options are analog (stereo or multi-channel) or hdmi (or DenonLink).

I've heard some players will play the SACD layer over coax if you set the player output to PCM, but I can't vouch for the accuracy of this.

You've been given a lot of good options on this thread, from the Oppo & Sony models to others. My recommendation would be to get the one with the connections / features / bit-rate / support you prefer, but don't expect any of them to play non-standard SACD discs (DSD rips), or SACD layers over anything other than analog or hdmi, and you won't be disappointed.

I have a channel setup w/ a DAC that has no HDMI. So what I don't understand is, what happens to people who have a 2 channel setup? How do they get their SACD to play? It sounds like there is no solution to digital out.

The Oppo clearly doesn't work, as it doesn't play SACD signal thru Co-ax

the Sony also doesn't work, I just view their manual:

http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4000691131.pdf

Quote:
Only the audio signals of conventional CDs can be
output from the DIGITAL OUT (CD) COAXIAL jack.
Those of Super Audio CDs cannot be output through the jack

To play a SACD/DSD disc you only have 2 choices.
HDMI or analog out (using the players DAC)

In my two channel analog rig I use the analog out
On my Sony SACD player. (Using the player's DAC)

In my other room (Oppo)
I have a Marantz AVR and I use HDMI using the AVR DAC.
In my main system I use a Sony blu-ray player to play
SACD discs via HDMI.

As noted, co-ax or optical won't do DSD due to copyright
Protection.

3 different players. If you wish to use your external DAC
You are probably SOL.

I buy from Monoprice a no. of times, their product quality is very good, shipping is very cheap. My last order is the XLR cable, outstanding quality. You can email them and ask what kind of guarantee do they have.

I like that switch to swap from 5.1 to 2 chnl. of this 5557, if you buy this before me, let me know and post it here

Actually, I'm good, as I don't feel the need for an external
DAC. I'm happy with the internal DAC on my Sony player.

When you get the mono price switcher post back if it
Works to your expectations.

I'm glad you're happy with it! However, I have no
Need for it. All 3 of my systems can play and decode
SACD discs. (Post #39) And I don't have any 'DSD' discs.

I burned two DVD-R with DSF and DFF files. Ayre C-5xeMP does not read. Its play only the original SACD.
Maybe try TEAC PD-501HR? May be other options?

Guys, will my Marantz 6010 support native dsd over hdmi? I am aiming for 5.1 surround SACD's. I also have a external hdd with 5.1 dsd dff files. Will those play natively on my avr without downconverting or whatsoever?

I'm trying to get this straight, I'm somewhat confused by this conversation. We have SA-CD that never really lit the world on fire. It's still possible to buy Blu-Ray players that support SA-CD, (I'm on my 4th SA-CD player) but it will never be a mass market format. Then someone gets the idea that PCM should be remastered using DSD technology and put on disc but not play on SA-CD players. The player would require separate file support for DSD discs.

Does this sound about right?

Calling Oppo a joke because it doesn't support these obscure discs?

I have the teac pd-501, and I record my vinyl masters to a tascam da-3000 SS recorder in DSD format, clean up the recordings and burn the files to a dvd-r disc and play them back. Works great. Also tascam has FREE conversion software to convert those did files to WAV in any flavor you like. I run my teac analog RCA outputs straight into a rogue audio Pharaoh tube integrated amp. Pure bliss IMO.

I've had the teac PDF-501 for over a year, a very rock solid unit

I want a new SACD player with following requirements for a 2 channel setup that will not have any display devices available...

1. Excellent 2 channel analog output quality

2. Support SACD and DSD (at least both DSD 2.8 mhz and DSD 5.6 mhz)

3. Can play DSD and other files (FLAC/ALAC/MP3/AAC/ETC) directly from USB storage device, if can play these files from a NAS would be even better

4. Has a good app for both iOS and android since no display devices will be available, need to have good funcitonal app to browse file collections for playbac

Looks like Oppo 105D is the only player that meet most if not all requirements, is there a pure SACD player that can meet my requirements??

5.2.4 HT - Sony XBR75X850C, Denon X4400H, Monitor Audio GS60, GSLCR, GSFX, C380LCR x4 and Martin Logan Descent I x2
2 Channel - Ascend Sierra Tower w/ RAAL, Sony HAP-Z1ES, Marantz SA-KI-Pearl, Primaluna Dialogue Three, Parasound Halo A21, JL Audio CR1, JL Audio E112 and ATS Acoustics room treatments

That was written just over a year ago. Since then I have added a BDP-95 and moved the DV-980 to my B system. Also the UDP models have been introduced; yet the DVs seem to be holding their prices. I always keep an eye out for a good deal on a DV-983.
