The UHP-H1 is $350, and the XA5400ES is $1200. The ES is obviously Evaluated Standard, but what is it inside that there is a near 4X the price? And is it worth it to buy the 55400ES

The only reason to buy the XA-5400ES is if you need a quality 2 channel D/A converter and your system can take XLR inputs. Otherwise, the less expensive UHP-H1 can play DVD-A and SACD 5.1 through HDMI so for me, it is the better unit. I own both.

what about the quality? The sony guy told me the ES is a better build.

Off hand, my first initial impression is the buttons on the Sony 5400ES, as my room is small, so I usually use the buttons on my old CD player. But I can get used to using the remote on the UHP-h1

Yes, of course the build of the XA5400ES is far superior, but again if you're not using the analog outs, I would say there is no reason to get the ES.

If you really want the best sound quality, the new OPPO 205 is going to be out very soon. I would want to see about it first. It should run around $1200 or so.

The OPPO 203 is already out, and appears to be very good also.

thanks for that oppo news. I wonder if they support DSD decoding, as their older models do not

I'm pretty sure it will.

From the 103/105? They can decode DSD directly to analog, as clearly stated in their respective owners manual.

The Oppo cannot compete with this Sony when you consider the cost/performance ratio. Put your money in a quality processor.

Which Oppo, the cheap or the expensive one or both? you mean the Sony is better? I have a half decent DAC from Emotiva. That's why my next step is to get a good SACD player. The reason I like the 5400ES is that I use those buttons at the front panel all the time. It's hideous to find the remote and push those buttons on the remote instead

You need to analyze your own needs. If you have a processor with an excellent D/A converter, the Sony UHP-H1 for the money and its features, is a no brainer.

still listening to my Sony XA5400ES, love it!

Also, still use my Oppo BDP-105, mostly for DVD's, DVD-A's, Blu-Ray Movies, BluRay-Audio

System:
Marantz AV8802A
Parasound A51 amp
Monitor Audio Gold GX speakers
JL Audio F110 sub
