SACD player for Yamaha RX-A1080

Hi,

I have just purchased a new Yamaha RX-A1080 receiver for my home theater and I need some help selecting a DVD or Blu-Ray player that will output SACD and DVD-Audio over HDMI.

I am going from an old Marantz SR5005 receiver which had a 5.1 analog input that I used from my old Pioneer Elite DV-59avi. The Yamaha doesn't have a 5.1 or 7.1 analog input so I would like to find a player that will output multichannel SACD and DVD-Audio over HDMI. I don't care if the player is new or used, just that it allows me to listen to all of my multichannel SACDs and DVD_Audio discs.

Can you provide some recommendations for a player that will meet my requirements?

Hello,

I recently helped a friend of mine install some new home theater gear he had purchased. He bought the Sony UBP-X800 universal player. We hooked it up to his Onkyo receiver via HDMI. We listened to CD's, SACD"s, and a DVD-Audio. I thought it sounded great and the user interface was simple to use and navigate. Build quality was pretty good as well. So maybe that is one to consider.

There aren't many options in the market anymore for universal players with Oppo out of the market. The sony x800 suggested is the cheapest option. It's main drawback is no front panel display. (they assume you'll use a monitor with it.) The next step up is the Sony X1000es, which has a front panel display and also an analog fr/fl RCA connection. The x1000es has a 3 year warranty instead of the 1 for the x800. The x1000es is 499, the x800 299.

You mention home theater. Will this player also spin movies? If so you might consider waiting until the second generation players (X1100es and x800m2) come out with Dolby Vision, of course there won't be a discount available when first released, which would put the x1100es at probably 699 instead of the discounted x1000es at 499. I didn't see any discounts of the x800 out there, and supplies will be dwindling down with the newer version m2 coming out soon.

The next option is the Pioneer LX-500. A universal player at 999 bucks. Built like a tank. Has analog FR/FL connections in addition to HDMI.

Thanks for the advice guys. I noticed you both mentioned the Sony UBP-X800 but didn't mention the UBP-X700. It sounds like the 700 has Dolby Vision. Will it work for both SACD and DVD-Audio over HDMI?

I checked on Sony's site and the X700 supports SACD and DVD-A over HDMI.

It's my understanding that the x700 does not support dvd-a.

Edit: confirmed in the X700 thread. Also from the Sony website from the x700 page. Disc Format:

Quote:
BD-RE, BD-RE Dual Layer, BD-ROM, CD (CD-DA), CD-R/-RW, DVD+R, DVD+R Double Layer, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-R Dual Layer, DVD-RW, DVD-Video, SA-CD (SA-CD / CD) Playback, Stereoscopic 3D (profile 5), Ultra HD Blu-ray™
there is no DVD-A in the list.

No the X700 does not do DVD-A, you have to get the x800 or newer x800m2 for that.

From Sony's website. List of disc formats for the x800m2:

Yes, I stand corrected. I looked again and it does not do DVD-A.

Thanks!

OPPO OP-DV980H. There's one listed on eBay.com for just under $130, shipped. Does SACD and DVD-A over m-c analogue and HDMI.
