Use Blu Ray player as SACD player for receiver?

Dear all,
I'm interested in getting an SACD player for my NAD 3020. I've been doing some research and it looks like most of the SACD players on the market these days cost over$700, if not more. So I was thinking I could get just a cheap Sony Blu Ray player which has SACD capability. And run an optical cable from the player to the NAD receiver. What do you think? Would there be a major difference in sound quality than if I just got a dedicated SACD player?
Thanks!

SACD licensing requirements prohibit playback of the SACD layer from an optical connection. What you will get is the CD layer not the SACD layer. Also unfortunately, you won't get a cheap Sony player with an analog audio output either. In recent years those have been dropped. The cheapest blu ray player I know of that has an analog connection is the Sony UBP-x1000es which can be bought for 499. You might find it cheaper soon as the newer x1100es is coming out. Other than that your only option for SACD playback from a cheap sony player is a HDMI connection. The cheapest option for SACD playback would be a cheap sony blu ray player and a cheap refurb AVR from accessories4less; you can then just use HDMI. Sorry.

The cheapest dedicated SACD player is the new ARCAM player at 1200 bucks. Marantz dropped SACD from the 8005 when the 8006 was introduced.

Edit: Denon has a dedicated SACD player. A refurb is 999 at accessories4less. I'd still go for the ARCAM, it will play hi rez files from USB and has networking capability, the denon does neither.

Supercharged Song Towers, Oppo BDP-203, Anthem MRX-520, LG B6 OLED
Headphone Rig: Oppo BDP-95, Burson Audio Soloist MKII Headphone amp/ Sennheiser HD800S, Sennheiser HD650

Check out the Pioneer LX500, a super 4K blu ray player that also plays SACDs, DVD Audio, Blu ray music, CDs, the lot. And sounds terrific. It is about as expensive as those mentioned above, but is superbly built and plays everything.
GREAT sound and picture, read the thread here on it.
Hope this helps,
God Bless,
Wayne

Modern Sony players which support SACD require an HDMI audio connection if you want to experience SACD soundtracks. The Sony BDP-S6700 (1080p Blu-ray, not 4K) often is available for less than $100.

Marantz SR7009 avr + MM9000 amp --> Atmos 7.1.4
Fronts=NHT 2.9+AC2, FH+TM=DefTech PM1000, LCR+TM amped

The OP wants a player capable of playing SACD. The model cited does not play SACD.

NAD D3020 is an inherently STEREO-ONLY Amp and does NOT support Decode of SACD Surround Sound, nor does it have an HDMI Input for conveying that format:
https://nadelectronics.com/wp-conten...h-manual-1.pdf

So simply connect Disc-Player's L/R Stereo Out Jacks to NAD [which "Should Work"].....

Or TRY Optical Out Jack to NAD, hoping that Disc-Player can be configured to output an available Stereo Track (or DOWNMIX Surround to Stereo).

Since modern Disc Players employ hi-tech Audio Filters on their Output, there will be no audible difference between these methods.

According to its manual, Sony's BDP-S6700 does play SACD discs, both stereo and multichannel. See, for example, page 31 of its owner's manual. (Screengrab of the pdf is attached.) You can download a copy of the U.S. manual from https://www.sony.com/electronics/sup.../45796691M.pdf

I have its predecessor model (BDP-S6500) which I have used to play SACDs.

You might be thinking of the DVD-A format, which these models cannot play.

Optical does not play SACD, he'd only get the CD layer. And the main problem for the OP is non of the cheap Sony BD players have L/R RCA stereo connections. You have to step up to the X1000es to get L/R RCA connections.

Yea, I was aware of that one. I just listed players I'd consider. The Yamaha is a bit long in the tooth. A good player no doubt, but no usb, just FR/FL RCA outputs. The Arcam is cheaper does usb audio, networking and streaming, has an ESS 9038 DAC, and balanced connections. It represents a much better value.

I had forgot about the Yamaha universal player. Sometimes accessories4less will have refurbs of it. (They don't now) Might be the best value at 499. Only downside is it doesn't support DVD-A, but those are fairly easily ripped and can be played from USB. I'd still check for sales of the Sony X1000es, now that the new one is coming out. It will probably be less that 499 soon.

Since we are on this topic, will a Coax Digital Out work?

No SACD licensing restrictions prohibit any digital playback of SACD except from HDMI. So you have to use analog playback or HDMI for digital. Use coax or spdif and you get the CD layer played back.
