For now, I've ordered an AMP8 kit from http://www.41hz.com/. It should do about 1350W into 4 ohms at low distortion. I have one of these chassis already that I hope it'll fit in: http://www.atiresearch-anodized.com/ATI-661U.html

I've got a couple of 500VA 25-0-25 trafos which give me 70V if I leave the CTs out. I'm thinking I might unwind the secondaries to make them 20-0-20. I also play to run this on 220V eventually, so I think I should be able to just switch to using the center taps at that time instead. What do you guys think? I can't seem to find a cheap and good SMPS at this voltage. Coldamp makes one but they've got a bad rep. over at DIYAudio.

Edit: and of course, I will have to make a softstart module, but that's not too hard.

Inferior why? 15W(from a Tenor OTL) may be gold in some applications ...

It is not simply huge wattage...but quality watts.

Ask yourself mortal , do you have as much displacement as me ? The answer is no unless you have a Windmere fan sub.

ha, really though, I just need more power. Like Tim Taylor minus the stuff blowing up.

*See is the +/- 60v design is sensitive to a higher voltage.
*Softstart not mandatory for dual 500VA's.
*220VAC supply is nice, but not critical to have.
*Quality watts? lol
*"I just need more power" proamps ?

+/- 65v is absolute max for that chip. My trafos will do 70v as-is. And soft-start is getting put in anyway because I already have the parts for it.

I would use +/- 60v to be safe. Tweak the transformer as needed.

Maybe some ERS paper will help.

I must personally thank Thylantyr for that link, via Undergroupd Audio. I'm only up to the part about disposable projectors - the real money is spent on the power cord! What a GREAT read to cramp the laugh muscles!

The DIY area has been growing here lately, with that, there has been an influx of folks getting into audio voodoo, we need to stomp this out before it takes hold.
