im am adding in some extra bass to my theater and in my quest have ended up looking at car audio subs, i have narrowed down my selection to 4 choices because of local aviability (although i am open to other suggestions):

two svc alpine type r 12"
one dvc eclipse titanium series 12"
one dvc eclipse sw7000 series 12"
one dvc digital designs 12"
one dvc dc sound lab 12"

my amp is a yamaha m-80 rated at 330watts rms at 4 ohms per channel (2 channels). dvc subs would be wired with one coil to the l channel, and one channel to the r channel.

sq takes priority over volume.

box will be my own design, probably ported, but ill work that out when i pick the sub.

any help on the sub selection, or what im trying to do is appreciated! im currently leaning twards one of the eclipse subs. power wise with the dvc the they match up to my amp well, and i only have to build one box instead of two! :P

thanks!

I'll suggest the Eclipse SW8200 with LMT, If you like Eclipse this is the best.

Dan

+1

They have a lot of displacement for 12's. Only thing is they model a bit funky in ported alignments, going off of the Klippel test I saw of one.

would sealed be better than? easer to build that for sure.

i was always under the impression that generally ported boxes gave better quality and low frequency response

I know availability is a priority but when it comes to a project for your Home Theater, why not go for one of THE best drivers @ $155.00 . . . . . CSS SD12 a "subduction" driver. Great for SQ!
Find it at creativesound.com.
The sound quality difference between sealed and ported is always being debated. The full answer has NOT yet been decided. Ported will be louder but it will of necessity be bigger too.

Here's the test of the Eclipse SW8200. Tons of stroke for the lows. Low inductance.

Other good 12's to consider are the CSS SDX12, Exodus Audio Shiva X and the Acoustic Elegance AV-12X and AV12H.

i looked at those, but dismissed it because of its low price point. didn't really want to cheap out. hate for my decent quality amp to go to waste because of my poor speaker choice. the reviews seem largely positive on them though...

distributor is in canada though, so no customs, yay! anyone know where they are made though?

i was actually looking at the sw9122 as it has the dual voice coils and was available close by. shipping on subs is killer!

tha av-12h/x looks promising, but no stock, and its pushing my budget limits as id have to buy two of them.

i ended up purchasing a single dc sound labs level 3 12" sub from a local shop, but i have another question.

for the box the instructions that come with the sub they say the following:

Suggested Sealed .75³ - 1³ ft
Suggested Ported 1.5³ ft
Suggested SPL Ported 2³ ft

but when i use a calculator, it says a sealed box approximate 4 cu.ft.

i would assume i should go with the calculated volume to optimize for my theater?

Last I checked, China.

To the post above; 4 cu ft is probably closer to what would be acceptable for home theatre. However, considering this sub is for car audio, you would have to compare the actual frequency response curves to see if there is any real benefit to the larger box size.
