I want to cut a rectangle in the mantle and have a white fabric or maybe metal speaker grille on it to look flush. Similiar to this:

All I want is a soundbar. I have a ton of room behind that mantle as its hollow and I don't really use the fireplace. I've been looking at "sealed" sound bars with no ports on the back or on-top, since it will be pretty much flush mounted in the mantle, and I would assume I wouldn't want anything being ported while is a recessed type install. Is this correct?

Below is a video I just made showing my setup. I would make the rectangle 46" wide, and maybe 5" high. I have quite a bit of room. This would allow for many different sound bar options, and I have a depth of about 5" or maybe more.

Any advice on the best way to make it look good? What type of grille to use, white fabric or metal? I was thinking a "press on" type grille like a normal house speaker? That way you wouldn't see the cut marks?

just do what the guy did in the picture.

chop a rectangular hole in your mantle.

glue some white grill cloth over the hole.

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=260-334&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=pla

then add trim pieces of wood to the front of the mantle in order to hide the rough edges of the glued on grill cloth.

the better of a "fit" to the hole that the soundbar is the better. and no, you don't want a ported soundbar inside the mantle.

if the soundbar doesn't fit the hole perfectly, just pack some foam or whatever around it inside the mantle.

should be an easy project.

Very cool!!! Love the diagrams.

Originally I was thinking to have a grill frame made. Using something like this and attaching to the front like a home speaker:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=260-346

Because I didn't want to take away from the aesthetics of the mantel. I never thought about adding more wood trim, etc to go around the hole.

Hmm. Here are some more pics of my mantel and a close up. It is very plain in the middle as you can see, I just don't want it to look overdone when complete. Thoughts?

if you don't want to chop your mantle up, you could always just build the same idea on top.

I have to say you are good, really good smile.gif I don't know if I can go that option though, since the top piece that's there now opens up to get to all the components, and I'm replacing that 60" tv with an 80" that's going to hang lower I think.

I'm not one that can really see stuff in my head first, and you have been a lot of help. Is there anyway to take my pics and show the speaker grill on it? Again, i think I'm going to have it be long enough that there will be about 5" on either side of the grille. It won't go completely end-to-end.

I know it could be as simple as this:

I don't think it can do the 3 panel pic you did in the diagram because of the dental trim at the top? This is about as fancy as I can get with my photo skills

Just an update. Got the bar and was testing where to place and it definitely has to be recessed. Since the mantle is about 3 feet deep, when the bar is placed at the back, the sound is cutoff when you are sitting on the couch since your ears are way below the bar and also due to the 3ft depth of the mantle:

The only way it sounds good is to set it here, and this looks horrible smile.gif

I'm working with someone right now on a soundbar design. Basic design will have each "speaker" in WMW layout using the Tectonic Elements BMR as the mid/tweet, flanked by two Dayton RS100. I'll be doing both an active and passive version. Front baffle will be 5.5"H x 50"W, although the width has some room for modification depending on needs. Depth iirc is 4.5". Having sold my house I can't do wood work atm, so I'm doing all the design work, and the other person is doing the actual build. I'm not sure on a time frame but it will probably push after the holidays.

Could work. Could get real hot too when the fireplace is on, inside and outside the mantle. If it were me I would look for a TV mount that extended out. My design is actually intended to be snugged against a TV (top or bottom) with the faces of both flush.

Hey again. Reviving this thread. I still haven't had the time to do this but I have some free time soon....

I think a sound bar that IS NOT PORTED on the side or back is probably the smartest, right? Again, I'm recessing a sound bar into the mantle, so if it's recessed flush I don't think one that is ported would be a good idea to use in this situation.

You could look at the Helium on the Parts Express speaker project gallery. That is front ported. A little taller than 5" though.

There us also the Ion 4 on DIY Sound group. Custom build the boxes so they are front ported.

Have you figured out your grill?

Thanks, but I'd like to try and hear something first maybe locally as then it would be easy to return. I've seen review on thew newer vizio sound bars and they are rated actually very good and I don't think are ported? Think I'll use this for the grille and get white fabric....?
