I bet you can find them cheaper when they hit the shelves. I paid only $280 each for my gen1 xls1500s new. I don't expect these to be much more expensive.

I've just now seen the XLS 1500s (Gen 1) @ $282.

If anyone has seen them at a lower price, please share the wealth.

I paid about $320 for mine 2 years ago. Musician's Friend had them on sale for $349 and one of the coupon code things...spend $300 get $30 off. So it was $319 with free shipping.

Any Audible Difference in the Two Series?

I currently have four Gen 1 XLS amps. I'm planning on purchasing a couple more to have my front 12" mid-basses bridged to a 1500 each. I am using a MiniDSP 10x10 balanced, so the DSP is not important to me. I recently purchased a Furman sequencer, so the remote turn on is also not important.

Are the Gen 2's using the exact same amplifier circuit/components? Are they audibly identical? Not counting the lower voltage input. Everything I have read only talks about the things I don't really need at this time.

Just a side-note... I use a XLS-2500 bridged to a Dayton Ultimax 18 in a 14ft3 enclosure tuned to 18hz. My actual, in room roll-off starts around 16hz. I had it on an Emotiva XPA-1 for a few weeks and really did not hear/feel any better ultra low end performance. However, the Crown obviously has more power, so I was comparing at moderate volumes. On my Dayton analyzer, the response was nearly identical. I understand that in a sealed cabinet the roll off would be much more of an issue, since my cabinet naturally rolls off anyway. I actually started with sealed subs, but personally preferred the vented efficiency at the sacrifice of sub-sonic performance. Everybody builds their system for themselves...

Why would you expect an audible difference?

Wish I would've known about these Gen 2 XLS amps before I bought the two QSC RMX2450a's to run my subs. They are awesome amps but the fan is loud. I own a first-gen XLS1500 and even when the fan spins up, it's really quiet. The new XLS 2502 looks to be selling for almost what I paid for a 2450. /facepalm

I think his comments were in response to the above talk about these amp having extensive rolloff below 20z thus making them of little use to us with ULF systems. Theres a lot of discussion and speculation if this is the case or not. This the last remaining issue that would keep me from purchasing these amps.

I guess the only real way to test out the LF rolloff is to buy one, run some sine waves through it and measure. Very rarely will you find info on low frequency rolloff (beyond your standard "subsonic filter") in a owner's manual.

Some of the QSC amps give the -3 dB spec, with the PL's -3 dB point at 3 Hz.

Interesting that for the XLS the frequency response listed for the damping factor starts at 10 Hz, perhaps the roll off is not as bad as expected.

Some measurements comparing to a known ULF amp would answer many of the questions.

You hear below 20hz? With what Crown has told me about roll off below 20hz for ULF I'd look elsewhere.

15hz-16khz. Now if I could only see as well as I hear. This has so many other things going for it that I'm gonna get one and measure it myself to answer that question once and for all. It'll go back if it doesn't perform.

I didn't actually ask Crown about gen2 but it was around at the time so would think they would mention it when I asked for which lines would be more appropriate for sub duty (they advised XLi and CTs), but probably should be asked about gen2 specifically to be sure.

Seems safe to assume the Crown rep was correct, but we all know many times people just pass what they think as what they know. I think it is likely the DSP chips have a nondefeatable HPF as pro audio isn't typically about the ULF.

With a simple set of measurements we would know one way or the other. I use mine XLS to drive my mains so it doesnt really matter to me, but it would be sweet sub amp because its so quiet (my fan modified QSC is still louder).

The XLi amps are a hell of a lot of power for the money, but I believe they aren't as clean up top. I just wish my X4000(XLi3500) wouldn't trip my 20A breaker upon turning it on. It's not every time, but it's still annoying.

I do not "expect" an audible difference. However, I have been around long enough to know that not every newer model is an improved model.

Over the weekend, I asked Crown about the differences in the amplifier sections and the signal paths. Specifically, if the signal path's are identical if the built-in crossovers/DSP's are off on both units.

This morning, I received an answer that the amplifier sections are identical. There was no comment about the signal path.

I guess I'll need to get one home to test before making any final decisions.

Sorry for the post necro, but which QSC do you have that's fan-modded? I have two RMX2450A amps that are spec'd down to 5Hz that I want to fan mod as the stock fans are loud. Want to see what fans you used and what your thoughts are on temps/performance.

I read this thread and bought myself a couple of 24-volt fans that should be quieter than stock, but I've not done any modding yet. https://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-di...an-switch.html

These are the fans I bought:

Thanks.
I modded a QSC RMX 1850HD amp using a Digikey fan often sited on the Behringer threads (EP4000 seems to be extremely closely modeled after the RMX series). The mod was very easy and it is significantly quieter than stock. I have the amp about 3' from my listening position and unless the music is extremely low volume I cannot hear it at all.

The fans you bought look great. I have had zero issues with heat, after a movie at -10 dB from THX reference the amp still blows cool air, but my basement HT is always quite chilly so that may be a variable. I run my subs +3 dB from what Audyssey sets.

Thanks, NWCgrad. I'm about to do the mod on both my amps. Going to record the baseline, idle noise level (with REW) then the modded idle level. Should be interesting.

Exclamation Heads-up: Prices on these are plummeting!

Up until today, BH Photo had the best prices on the Gen I XLS amps. I just scored three XLS1500's for $200 each, free shipping from EBay seller proaudiostar. Factor in the $12 in EBay Bucks I earned and they were $196/ea. My L/C/R are going to be very happy. And loud.

I was hoping the XLS fire sale would hold off until Jan (when I have the ability to make another stereo purchase...already blew this yrs budget on an Atmos preamp and speakers).

FWIW, I've seen a few sellers, both on EBay and on their own websites saying things like "Running out current stock", "must go" and "Blowout clearance." It's obvious they know the ship date for the GenII (admittedly a nicer amp with the built-in 12v turn on) and they are dumping stock.

I would've liked to buy another 2 amps for my surrounds, but my AVR is powerful enough to justify leaving the surrounds on the AVR. Removing the duty of powering the L/C/R from the AVR will go a long ways towards available juice for the surrounds.

I don't think they'll be around at these prices past the next few weeks or so. If you can swing buying them now, I would. I was able to resist BH's $209 price, but at $200+EBay bucks, my darn credit card just jumped out of my wallet. I will have to build another 12v-switched relay box for these, but I already own all the parts except the relay.

Stupid Deal of the day ( yesterday) was XLS 1000 for $ 149.00. I picked up 2 . I was going to bridge them for subs, but they may end up powering the outside speakers instead. Should make some nice noise outback.
