I already changed the layout once and very well could end up moving things again. Below is a diagram showing the current tentative layout - the signal and speaker wires will get twisted and run along each PCB mounting plate. AC wires will get a 180deg bend and run twisted over to the right side to the electrical bus - I am planning to have a separate DIN rail bus for each bank of boards to keep the wiring relatively clean.

It would be nice to move the power bus to the left side so that I don't need the 180 bend on the AC wires, but then I would want to add another aluminum plate to shield the left most boards and probably also reduce the spacing between each amp board. The wires would still need to be bent slightly to clear the boards so I'm not sure that it's really warranted - I'm open to suggestions of course and any input is appreciated.

I am also debating adding some provision to power transducers down the road, using the spare set of outputs from the 2x4 and the remaining open space on the right most mounting plate. I might order a couple more XLRs to provision the back panel just in case...

That's lot of xlr's! Trs might be a bit cheaper and save some space. Have you thought about using 4 or 8 pole Speakons (where you can) as well to save space/clean up wiring?

Are there any books or links that you guys could suggest for someone wanting to learn how to build their own amplifiers?

A pair of DB25's (or perhaps separate XLR's for LCR and a DB25 for everything else) would also save a lot of space.

I already have all of the connectors actually, but if anyone on a budget is looking for XLRs check out the Series A and AA connectors. They are plastic OEM style without the panel mount flange, for roughly $1 each or even less in small quantities. I didn't pick them because of my machining tolerance risks to keep the panel looking halfway decent. I actually picked the 2 conductor speakons for the outputs, not for any particular reason other than to keep myself from getting confused and wiring something wrong.

My education was done largely by reading the diyaudio forums; most useful for me were the main Hypex nCore and TPA3116 mega-threads. TPA3116 and nCore Part of my job is doing manufacturing equipment engineering, and it helps that I have access to a machine and electronics shop and some very savvy engineers that design a lot of custom electronics. If you want to play around, the TPA3116 is a good learning tool because you can get one for under $20 and drive it using an old laptop power supply - I am temporarily driving my 1099s using one that is sitting in a tupperware container.

Interested in what your final price point is projected to be for this project?

I have a 13.4.4 setup and I'm looking to power the main speakers with Crown's Drivecore 2 series amps. Problem is that I'll need most of an equipment rack just to hold them.

The price should come in around $1600 total, and as stated above I haven't done much to minimize cost. The 400W per channel Hypex configuration I looked at would have been around $2.5-3k depending on the details and exchange rate, and 150-200W per channel options from HK / Aliexpress were under $1k. A rack full of amps certainly looks very pro, and I also looked at the Crowns (and Emotiva) and settled on this because I wanted a project and liked the details and specs of these boards.

As I'm also in the market for a receiver/pre-amp that supports X number of channels and looking at options like the Trinnov Altitude, Datasat, Theta, I'm wondering how many off the shelf parts could get to something similar. This being the solution to power those channels.

Some talk is mentioned here regarding a HTPC build with Atmos/Dirac, nothing substantial has come out it yet.

If you have that kind of budget and want to DIY, do a full Hypex nCore nc400 with SMPS600 power supplies. That's going to come in somewhere in the neighborhood of $600/channel, and it should represent one of the higher end higher price pre-fab board options that can be packaged into a low form factor fanless housing. IIRC, Theta uses the OEM only nc500 amp board in some of their products. For the HTPC part, as an alternative way to implement phase correction check out options using jRiver with the free open source rePhase plugin.

An HTPC with Atmos is going to take a while due to licensing with Dolby. If you're already considering a Trinnov, I would get that and use an HTPC for storage, instead of running everything from the HTPC. The Trinnov already has its own room correction, and they have employees on the forum that can help you dial things in further.

For amps, as a price point to shoot for, Crest makes a 220W @ 8 ohm 8 channel amp, CM2208, for $1700. Two of those will power a 9.x.6 with one channel to spare. Crown has an 8 ch/300w amp and 8 ch/600w amp, but Crown is significantly more expensive.

A bit overkill but at least looks somewhat professional. Each group of 4 terminal blocks will support AC mains line and neutral, along with the 12V DC remote trigger circuit.

A wire stripper like this is an essential time saving tool, because of the ability to adjust the length and diameter to strip and the ability to strip more than one wire at a time. It took about 2-3 mins for me to strip back 4mm of insulation on all of my new patch cables.

I fitted the terminal block last night and started to temporarily hook up 3 channels to test while the back plate is being worked on, but nothing has been powered up yet and I might very well just wait.

What are these panels for? I've been selling industrial automation for 15yrs now. I have Omron, ABB, Weidmuller, Panduit, Hoffman, Redlion, N-tron, MTE, Marcus and a few other lines..lol

Always funny to run into someone in the same industry.

I do electrical retrofits/repairs on CNC machines. Usually rip out all of the old electrical boards and drives and replace with modern technology. We use a few of the brands listed especially Omron for limit switches and proximity sensors.

It was my first time using a mill, and it went pretty well but I did make two small mistakes. The table on the system is accurate to 0.01mm so placement accuracy of the holes isn't difficult but everything is controlled manually. Both my mains power plug and mains switch cutout came out slightly big because of my accounting for the tool radius at the corners of the square. The plug will work fine but I will need to order a bigger switch.
