We still have to compile the score sheets. The top individual picks differed from round 1 and round 2. An individual picked the jtr228 as their favourite both rounds, and another picked the F15's as their favourites both times as well. Since I didn't participate in the blind, I'll wait till the objective results come back once tallied and I'll let the participants comment on their subjective impressions.

Thanks for hosting the GTG Iz7j, and thanks to your setup elf This was my first speaker audition of this type, and what I did learn was that I am not as much an audio geek as I thought, thanks :P

The first round I could easily pick out the 4 speakers (no idea what brand was what), the 2nd round I could tell the speaker A apart but the other 3 sounded nearly identical to my non-expert ears. I at least was able to pick the JTR as my favorite consistently !

I'll be honest I would easily be happy with any of the 4 speakers and will be in no rush to upgrade my 1099. I was also not blown away with the extra bass provided by the F15, makes me have to reconsider my next upgrade (MBM are now in question).

That was an excellent event, my ears still have some ever so slight ringing.

I had Danleys first for round 1 and F-15 first for round 2.

Didn't you have the F15`s as your 2nd preferred in round 1 and the Danleys last in round 2? I expect to see an F15 build thread for you soon. Lol

Don't bother with mbm:s until you have at least 2 x high excursion 18's

Yeah I am now leaning towards just getting 2 pairs of 10XL for surround duty and then eventually sourcing a pair of 18"s. A very informative event for me, I think the take home message for me was to speed up the process of replacing my avr with a DAC so I can DSP as soon as possible.

I'll host a movie night at the end of August. You can check out dirac and what 8x18's can do.

I'll write more after but my ratings for both rounds were consistent.

F15
JTR close 2nd
Danley distant 3rd
1099 distant last

I guessed the F15 right but the other speakers I didn't know which were which, I thought the 1099's were the JTR's, the Danley's were 1099's and the JTR's the Danley's. So essentially the JTR's performed way better than I thought, the Danleys much worse than I thought, and the 1099's much worse than I thought. I easily could tell the speakers round 1 to round 2 but I had never heard 1099, Danley's or JTR's before so I couldn't pick which speaker was which. I easily could tell the F15, I knew from the first song both rounds. The 15" driver is really obvious to me

I wrote like 8 pages of notes, waiting for them to be sent to me

The old 228 is really good eh. In Vancouver it was hard to tell it apart from the 1099. But considering it has smaller woofers thats quite a feat.

I've never heard the F15 but sounds like it was well liked. Especially if youre a mid bass junkie

Hope everyone had fun

Yes, they're 4.5ft^3 tuned to 38hz and I ended up using the v1.08 with the HF unchanged.

Not just according to Bassment. They consistently came last in both rounds based on 4/5 blind participants (I don't have the 5th set of scorecards)

Here are the summary comments on the 1099:
- aggressive high
- little harsh

- a bit harsh highs

- OUCH

Round 2, positions and sequence changed. -7mv
- bit harsh

- crazy loud

- hearing distortion at ref

- too much attack

When we raised the volumes to reference, some people were cringing with the 1099.

Ya the JTR was wayyyy better than I was expecting. It actually got significantly better when we turned it from -10 to -7 and it sounded great at reference too. I expected it to get worse as we got louder but it only got better. It's one of the reason I thought it was the Danley, it just sounded so good loud. And had really good midbass, close to the F15

And before someone says the 1099 XO's were put together wrong (I can't wait till someone tells that @HFGuy . I will literally LOL).
The 1099 was measured nearfield in my room and the owner.

Here are the measurements from Round 1 for all speakers. First overall pick was a split between the Danleys (85 points) and F15 (84 points)

Are there various iterations of the 1099 crossover (i.e., a version that attenuates the highs)?

I think the standard one is that (designed for behind a screen), and there is a resistor you can add to attenuate the highs if you're not using it behind a screen

It's interesting that at two of the more recent GTGs some people (perhaps only a subset) have indicated that the 1099s can be somewhat harsh. However, at the prior GTGs, it doesn't appear that the was a mentioned sentiment. Is there a reason for this?

Different rooms (treated vs untreated). The room we used today was treated. Types of songs/materials used. Audience preference and hearing ability (most of the guys who attended this gtg can easily hear over 18khz tested and are very sensitive to high frequency). Our last speaker shootout was with the F15 and the Seaton Catalyst 8c. In that GTG, mostly the same participants found the F15 harsh when they were out in the open with the crossover meant for behind an AT screen. When we placed the F15's behind the screen, which naturally attenuates 2khz+ by 2.5db people instantly liked them.

At this GTG, we measured the 1099 to be 3-4db louder in the 2khz+ HF range behind the screen compared to the F15.

After having them at my house for my gtg meet and then building them for dman and listening to them behind my AT screen I found these to be great set of lcr speakers for anyone's room. These do have good midbass but do find the f15's have more.
