What ever happened to TC Sounds?

They made some incredible products. Anyone know what happened to them?

I didn't know that, can you give me the condensed version?

And what I mean is, what is the current state or outlook of the company? Was there ever official word of them closing down?

No idea what's going on now. They went through a couple of bankruptcy filings with liquidations of most/all of their assets in at least one of them. I remember a patent for a frame and their magnetizer(s) among other things being up for grabs at one point. Around 2005 we(svs) ended up losing like $45,000 during one of these incidents. We were told "oh yeah, all of the components you paid for are on the way from china(motor assembles iirc). We'll have 500+ drivers completely assembled for you within a few weeks. That was repeated for a couple months(?), finally Thilo just said..."you know what, I used all of your money for other stuff, my bad. btw, we just filed chapter 11(or whatever). Have a nice day."

I can't remember all the specifics(this was like 12 years ago?) but I believe there were 3 POs paid for for 250 drivers each. These were our tier one and two drivers(lower lines) so about $60 each on avg in 250s sounds about right for the era.

I remember sitting down one evening with our CFO during a board meeting weekend and doing an extensive tally on our total losses for this incident...it was well over 100k. The main contributing factor was lost sales on various models because we were OOS on their drivers.

The current issues have zero to do with the bankruptcy from years ago. Thilo said to me on the phone last Christmas, that he was eventually going to set-up for direct sales through his website. PE dropped them due to returns/failures from chinese manufacturing. After that phone call, I bought 4 LMS-Ultra drivers from PE that were available after he provided 28 basket assemblies to match existing motors that they had. PE subsequently picked up RE subs as an alternative brand.

I would argue that RE are at least on par, if not better than TC Sounds.

For home theater, SQ and low inductance I would argue that RE is NOT above TC at all. If you want a driver that does very well with very low distortion from ULF to 150hz I would say it is very hard to beat the Ultra with the same SPL. You would have to use a pro audio driver to have lower distortion and those are not good when it comes to ULF.

This was about the last time I heard their name mentioned.

However looking at that sub on the web currently, it mentions NOTHING about TC Sounds, so who knows if they are actually making the driver, or some other EOM is being used now...

I "heard" the Monoprice + TC fell through and the Monolith drivers are another OEM but I don't follow consumer stuff close enough to know if it was just a rumor.

The STW15 is a Peerless product. They also apparently make the SB16 and PB16 driver for SVS currently.

TC used to produce SVS drivers, many years ago.

I worked for TC sounds before they went down. It was due to them hiring some idiot to launch our same subs but under a new name (Audio Pulse). He made it to where we'd launch the new line in winter time when it should've been during summer. Not enough subs were being sold and Tilo was tapped out not being able to pay the employees.i stayed to

You can get subs if they still have it at Parts Express...that's who we sold our inventory to.
