I don't want to modify them unless there is a clear advantage.

Now we know what the screen is for.

Oh I knew it was to prevent things flying in there, but thats not an issue for me, and what I would like to see is a measurement with or without it. Flyscreen seems to me like it might do something to the high frequency. What I do know, is these dont follow the 10-20khz graphs that Beyma released for the driver back when it did not have the screen, now all 7 of mine, including most measurements I have recently seen show a large dip.

So you don't hear or measure any improvement from 1.2kHz on up between factory stock or removing the back plate into a larger well damped closed cabinet? Not so much, here is a somewhat rudimentary comparison,

Rears (Backplate on, 1200hz XO):

Towers (Backplate off, 1750hz XO):

Im actually inclined to believe the distortion you see under 1k there is mostly from the Faital 8PR200 and not so much from the TPL. In any case, we are talking 5db not 20db of distortion as has been claimed.

I will actually do this measurement with my new modules properly with plate on and off of just the TPL by itself next week and will post.

In any case, taking off the backplate and stuffing the crap out of it with acoustic foam is IMO a far better solution that leaving its factory form, there is no scenario where hard plastic shell is going to be good for the sound.

My TPL's actually have screen on both sides.

This is the felt it comes with. There is one more of those felt pads on the rear wall inside the plastic cover, that's it. It doesn't even cover the whole rear and does not cover the side walls.

With the back plate off it looks like you get a lot more of that top octave too.

Likely non-perfect mic position. They actually measure the same...

Here are different graphs, more recent, purely response though, but you can see the top octave is identical on the two designs.

You can actually see the efficiency difference here too, these graphs were taken with speakers and mic in identical positions and volume same level etc...

Looks like I'm building modular cabinets for the TPL150H so I can remove the back plate. I'll also figure out how to deal with the midrange. A full horn or waveguide will have too large of T-M spacing.

You post about possibly using the TPL with a horn based mid got me to wondering about the JBL CMCD-82 that NWCgrad is using on his 3 way center channel build. From all that I have read, the CMCD-82 is probably the best high efficiency mid on the market. Of course an Acuton C90 is probably the top dog in 2 channel audio, but it's lack of efficiency makes it a poor choice for this application, even if you go active. I am not 100% sure what the CMCD-82 cost, nor would I know exactly what horn would mate best to it, but if you are looking to build an all out high efficiency 3 way setup of your LCR's this would be a heck of a way to get there!

Funny thing happened to me as I was getting started on my speaker project. I had to stop and have coronary bypass surgery. CABGX4. Didn't have the heart attack. Caught it in time.
