The Magic Square Array

Since I had to wait for the ninth driver, I had six for a while. This shows the difference between six and nine (no eq, no other changes):

Once in place, no eq:

boost of +12dB recommended by JBL, but at 30Hz, not 80:

some eq to flatten the peak:

a little extra boost:

deq on:

Time to load up my demo disc.
Build thread to follow eventually.
Hard to beat for <$600 and a weekend.
Michael

Less than one day normally. Unless it's a black Friday or other major sale you may only have minutes to get an order in at that price.

Don't rub it in. Harman didn't have any more. Walmart is still f*ing around with a UPS shipping label. Ordered 3/26. In all fairness, they said it would take a week. It turns out that actual shipping will probably take a day or two; they're just sitting around with it.
Once it gets here, it will just get returned to the store. I made the array look pretty by putting the mis-matched one in the middle. Of course, the whole thing is hidden behind the couch, so it's a moot point anyway.

Beautiful graphs. Nice going. I wish my nearfield could EQ like that (farfield EQs fine and near/far combined looks good so I'll live with it).
How's it sound and feel?

Sounds great. Clean, deep, wonderful.
And there is actually some feeling, too, which I wasn't expecting.

But that's what the mini-boss will be for.

Tomorrow's project.

Here are my REW measurements with DSP and room correction applied. I have only lowered the gains on the 2 that are nearest MLP to try and reduce the drone I get at certain frequencies. Before I start over from scratch I am going to try and put 1 of the subs out of phase to see if it will reduce some of the drone.

Nicely done project.

Only flat to 15 hz? Don't hesitate to add a bunch of boost (or a negative high shelf) below 20 hz. You will certainly have lots of excursion left in the tank. Sub arrays are great like that... you can get away with murder with EQ boost and still be in the safe zone for excursion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Subs are like pizzas: you get way more good stuff with the big ones.

It adds a small amount of mass, which doesn't bother me a bit. I got these from PSI (fixmyspeaker.com). That's the 6.5" dome dustcap in polypropylene. You could go a size or two smaller if so inclined. I'm not sure what glue I'll end up using when I get around to doing all this, but there it is. For a few bucks more they look a little better.
For those wanting all your JBL's to look the same......see Chris's post above from a few months ago.....big improvement with the black dust cap and a bit of speaker glue.

So I finally got my boxes put together and am ready to get these set up with a proper eq in the inuke3000. With the understanding that I need to set everything up specifically for my room based on measurements, are there some basic settings that I should start with as I start playing with these things? I have REW and the UMIK but am a total noob to taking measurements and setting up accordingly. Please point me in the right direction! You guys have been so helpful already, much appreciated!

Take it slowly; it will take a while to get everything "dialed in."
In the meantime, a +6db low shelf @ 30 or 40Hz wouldn't be a bad place to start.

What in tarnation is a DBA?

Edit: ohhhh... THAT is a DBA.

No, not likely. I was just going to make a zillion sealed boxes and go full ham.

Apologies. I knew that, but between transitioning from night shift back to days, and well, um, perhaps getting into the sauce a little bit, it escaped me.

I'm not sure I can do that in my room. Couch up against wall, speakers against a half-wall which acts as a divider between the living room and dining area. So I'd have to go wayyyyyyy up and that's about as awkward as it could get. Not that they 16 12's across the front I have planned now won't be awkward, but let's not get bogged down in the practicality of fun things.

I'm not 100% sure quite yet. Here is my thought thus far though;

Across the front, 4 discreet 4x1's (tall) with mains sandwiched. (qty 16 up front). I would like these to look nice, so I'm working through how to build, dimensions, etc. now. I'll likely make these a little bigger than the nearfields.

Behind/nearfield, keep the 12 I already have, and maybe increase that to 18 (two magic 3x3's?). Likely keep that to 1 or 2 channels and I DO want to eq nearfield differently that mains.

This means I need 6 channels of bass eq. to do it right.

It also means I'll end up using between 28 and 34 of them.

Amp wise I was thinking a crown 1502 per 4x1 across the front (4 of them) and the same for a 9x9 in the rear (2 more) but I also already picked up a few 2502's, so maybe I'll just use two of those across the front. I'm not sure quite yet, it'll be excessive by many standards, and barely adequate by AVS standars when I'm done.

Remember this is just an audio system...

I don't know if a vertical arrangement loses any co-location benefit versus square. That's way above my knowledge level. If there is a difference, it may not matter to you.
I''m going to buy stock in miniDSP now. And whatever utility you use to provide your electricity.

That doesn't really answer my question. When you go to the EQ tab in REW and select filters it has a list of different EQ makes, is there one of these that matches better with the NX3000d than the others? Also the NX3000D doesn't show eq below 20hz so to boost below that on the first band of EQ that is applied one would need to make sure that band is set to HS12, whatever that means, which seems to boost every thing up a few db.

Sorry, didn't understand that the question was about REW.
"Generic" is fine.
My first filter is +12dB LS6 @30Hz .
Other settings will depend on your room.
You are following the REW thread linked in the bottom line of my sig, right?

Reading it again I wasn't very clear with my initial question. Yes I have read through some of that thread about REW.

Thanks,
