I would like to use 2 of these as balancing subs. I have a space 13” wide and 10” deep. How tall should I make the boxes? I will be feeding them max 352 watts a piece.

Give them about 1.5 cuf each. Less is okay also.

Depending on how much you want to brace it, 4-5ft tall would work right?

Leave it at 8 ohms and call it a day :)

You will have delay issues running nearfields on the same channel as subs up front.

I don't think it will matter as there will be minimal spl from the open baffle risers, they are meant to be for tactile response.

So has anyone played with adding mass to the cone? If it's not about SPL, but moving mass...

But if your tush is calibrated to the millisecond, you won't be happy.

Did you really need to quote that entire post in your reply?

I modeled it because I was interested in how adding an aftermarket dust cap would affect tuning and it doesn’t seem to be very beneficial after 5 grams, after that it drops spl and doesn’t return much of a lowered fs. Not worth it IMO.

If you're talking open baffle, SPL doesn't matter since you're not really making much of any. Adding the mass will decrease efficiency up top and get you more excursion down low. Would be easy to test. Just model as an infinite baffle and track excursion.

In a 2 cu ft sealed box, adding 30g will give you about another dB at 20hz and subtract half as much at 60hz, with a mild bump to system Q. Not a huge deal.

Femi, how many JBL 12's will you need to add up to one of your JTRs? lol.

I really like how you did the riser sub! I'll have to keep that in mind for when I do mine. So how does that work, do the legs of your chairs/couch rest or mount on the raised lip? Or did you remove the legs and place the couch directly on the 2x4 lip?

Also I really want to get your impressions when you do fire it up, this is exactly what I planned to do for my back row. I was wondering if 2 will have much of an impact. Did you build them ported or sealed?
lol...i don't know maybe 20. I purchase 4 of them before and i'm going to buy 4 or 6 more. But honestly i don't know what i going to do with them. They are so cheap that i can't help but buy them. lol

Im single. Very few people have heard what my system can do, like maybe 3. Neighbors havent complained yet. I wouldve loved to go with stacked quadhorns firing opposite of each other. With only around 6-800 watts on 2 15's It would've been way louder, but sealed is easier to EQ plus you dont have to deal with tuning freq cutoff.

I for one, think this find was huge. Easy, fairly cheap, 8 work perfect with a 6000DSP.

Has anyone tried black paint or sharpie on the dustcaps? It looks like there was some mention of it previously, and a comment about the shape of the cap, but not much else. Am I reading the information above correctly that we have a little bit of added mass to work with that shouldn’t affect anything?

minor point but why does it bother so many to have jbl stamped on the cap? its one of the most respected names in the industry.

To me? It looks and feels cheap. Not to mention it’s a bit pretentious to be bragging peak power handling on the dust cap lol!

And, if you happen to be as fortunate as I was, you end up having to mix and match the three models that are identical in specs but different in appearance.
Fortunately, it's behind my couch, so the difference is of no consequence to me (or, more importantly, to my wife).

+1. I'm fine with the GX1200's that just say "JBL" on the dustcap. It's not that subtle, but it's not garish either.

The CS1214's with the big, white, "1000" on them just scream "LOOK AT THE SUBS I GOT IN MY CAR Y'ALL!". Followed by "I GOT'EM FOR $29.95 EACH!". I've got 8 of them right in front of me when I sit down to watch something. I'd like for the dustcaps to disappear.

I'm aware of JBL's reputation and pedigree but in this case, the boys upstairs in marketing decided that they needed something visible that really grabs your attention. I want something invisible to the eye that only makes itself known to me by a gentle punch in the chest

Buy some 1/2x1x8 strips and build a grill that covers them all. Make a frame, stretch some joanne fabric spandex/cotton over it, staple the fabric to the back of the frame and attach the frame to the boxs lol. Gone. Or build a false wall .

I didn't think of that. I've also got HTM-12's I worry about every time the grandkids come over. Grill covers for everything would do it. Hmmm. Thanks for that. Something to think about.

This x 1000.

I don't mind the JBL name at all, but "garish" is the correct word for the CS1214's with 1000 watts/etc. Just need a teal S10 with a "paint tear" coming off and a tapout sticker on the back window to complete the look, assuming the driver has a Varnet France t-shirt on. Slow your roll JBL, let's tone that down a couple of notches.

Personally I don't like using grilles, and like I said before... it IS the diy section so very simple to change dustcaps, and cheap too now that I got a pile at a discount.

Of course to each their own... one good thing is we don't have to like what each other prefers!

Joanne actually sells speaker grill cloth too, I think 90/10 cotton/spandex is what silverticketproducts uses on the back of their AT screens...good enough for an AT screen = good enough for a speaker grill if you ask me lol.

Actually this brings up a good topic. i just put covers on my htm12s and also the additional 12" woofers i added to make them htm1212s.

I used the HD covers from parts express that are black covers and then 4 clamps per that are held with screws. LOL i waited years and added them after the threat of abuse by kids has actually lessened.

They took about 5 min each. Super easy, goes right over the foam surrounds. im not sure how they would do with 15mm xmax drivers, i think the htm12s and the mbm woofers i added (dayton pro 12s) have roughly 5 to 6mm xmax that is unlikely to ever be used.

i have infinity 1260s that are similar i think, with 16mm usable. if someome is interested i can look more closely.

the bad news though is as i look at them in a lit room i think you could read the covers through them. it would partially cover but not enough to be illegible imo.

good news is they work great, stay put and do not seem to affect response. i have not looked closely at distortion data (i can though) but i know from a response graph the response is not affected negatively in any way obvious to my ear or a graph.

I think if you had the non cs1214 caps and wanted them just toned down paint would be fine. The CS1214 needs a bag over it's face to be moderately attractive, some makeup isn't going to cut it.
