For a complete package at that price if you don’t have an amp already, it’s probably not worth your time unless you really enjoy building. Even the cheapest pro amp with dsp will run you around 300. If you don’t have wood, glue, sandpaper, paint/finish, etc. already then you really blow your budget. You certainly aren’t going to save money. But if you up your budget by just a few hundred and are patient, you could build some JBLs or VBSS and destroy the SVS.

Dude that’s awesome! Is there a recommended plate amp for the JBL I can match with this? I’m going to order that kit for sure.

You guys convinced me to order 4 of these subs just to have on hand for projects haha.

I live around the corner from Rythmik Audio and they’re having a holiday sale through the month and will let me pay cash so no tax or shipping, but with that kit a might not bother.

A Bash 300S from Parts Express would probably be perfect. It’s around $130 I believe. I’d model everything in WinISD to check what kind of hi pass on the bash needs to be configured.

I had trouble modeling the driver.. it’s a me thing... lol

Anyone able to post the wdr (?) driver file?

Thanks!

By accident I ended up with 20 drivers instead of 16... so now I’m trying to figure out how to wire those into 4 enclosures... or, gasp, find a way to buy 4 more to do 6 per box... though I don’t know if I have the room for towers of subs that big...

I could do 5 subs with 4 drivers wash, but I’m not sure how to program 5 subs with MSO... that’s too many for a MiniDSP 2x4...

Have a question and want it answered in podcast format?

Minidsp 4x10 solves that issue. Lol

Look at my “Common drivers” thread. Matt (MTG90) posted a zip file in it.

It contains his DATS TESTED CS1214s. File name is 00 JBL CS1214

I've used the Dayton SPA250 to great result. It has a built in 18-19 high pass which is perfect.

I have an old JBL PB12, which the plate amp went out on it years ago. I had an old Kenwood power amp laying around, so I re-wired the sub to use the Kenwood for power.

Anyway, I think the speaker is starting to go out, because I get crackling sounds sometimes during really low bass, even with a 30Hz inline filter from my AVR to the Kenwood power amp.

My question is, would buying this speaker and replacing it within the PB12 box make things better, or should I save the money and just buy a whole new powered sub?

btw, listening room is 12x20, 95% of the time is movies.

I was all set to buy 2 Full Martys with the UM18-22 drivers yesterday when I saw this thread. I am in a 17'x17'x8' dedicated theater room (bonus room over the garage attached to the house) currently with nothing in it but a couch. I am setting everything up from scratch. I was budgeting $2200 for subs and the amp to drive it. I asked my wife and she said I could fill the room with these speakers!!! I will most likely be making the speaker boxes from scratch. I have never done this before but I am somewhat confident in my wood working skills.

Is there a lower and upper limit to how many I can put in one physical box?

Is there a limit on how big the box can be?

Do I want the space inside the box to be open between all the speakers or closed off so each speaker has there own sealed section?

Is there an upper and lower limit to how big that space should be?

Does it matter what configuration I make the box? (Tall and narrow vs short and wide vs not a rectangle at all)

What exactly does the SLAP do?

If I am supposed to have 1xSLAP per 2xSpeakers does it matter where I put the SLAPs and where I put the speakers?

How many of the speakers/boxes should I have wired together to go to say 1xNX3000 or 1xNX6000?

I don't need the D model of these amps because I will have the miniDSPs right?

I understand that a DSP is needed for this but I have never used one so which of those miniDSP models should I get?

With the amount of air being moved or pressurized in my room from the large surface area of 16-32 of these speakers will that mess with my ears?

looks like it is going to be time to finally start a build thread...

I think I settled on a name for the theater build finally... It shall be: The 20 12 Theater

Both for the ominus end of times Mayan prophecy... and the fact that I'm building my subs with 20 12" JBL's...

Single ported 4.5 cf 1-12" JBL guy here, tuned to 25hz.........

I don't have the ear of some of you audiophiles here, but I've enjoyed bass in various formats all my life, car audio and home.

That being said, nearfield right behind the center setting position of my couch this thing destroys.....as-in makes you jump out of your seat during scenes from Interstellar, Solo (Star Wars), GoT Battle of Blackwater bay scenes, etc.

I knew I wasn't going to build this to compete you with all of you animals nor do I have enough space, rectangle room sealed, 9.5x17'.

I love this thing and here is what I spent (see my user name for further justification).
$140-used Behringer 1000D (to limit and play with max output to prevent overexcursion so I know I can play it at any volume and was happy I had this limiter on when the cargo explodes scene in Solo............)
$50-couple pieces of scratch and dent MDF(70% off) 3/4", plus speakon's etc.
$30-JBL (oh yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh)
Speaker wire-had it
2-120mm comp fans, had them for a custom cooling solution since it was going in a cabinet and also I like to kick back knowing everything is safe
Total spent - $220

The box is fugly, heavy and a b**** to move, but i really really enjoyed building it and got a lot of pointers from people on this forum.

I say for all who are asking, sealed or ported, if you want something in expensive, low cost to try out silly stuff with, this thing is amazing.

My build:

anyone have suggestions on the best way to model filters in WinISD that would work well?

what about just building everything out and letting Audyssey do the EQ? though that might not work well if I'm running MSO...

Anyone ever thought about or done a big ottoman with these? I'm thinking it would probably work well with a sectional if you finished it nice. Could even go ported if it's 4'x4' and decently tall.

Maybe something like below?

I used speak-ons instead, for both amp and box connection, a much better solution

Here is a example, a kit with 10 of each male/female :

Dual AVR 13.1.8 SWAtmos - Atmos 13.1.8/DTS X 9.1.8/Auro 3D 13.1 - Denon AVCX8500H+AVRX7200WA - Klipsch+KEF - 6xSI18" - 12xJBL 12" w/6xSLAPS M12 downfiring VNF - 3x2 stacked Crowson MA - 4xBK-LFE Dual TR Sleds- 6xNU6K(fan&trig mod) - Minidsp 10x10HD - Oppo UDP203 - XB1X - ATV4K - Vertex2 - JVC RS600 Dreamscreen V2 120"- Philips 65OLED873.

I'll consider those instead of the regular cup terminals for the box, thanks. I'll definitely need some NL4s for the amp, I heard they are much easier to work with than the NL2s.
What I was referring to is the connection to the driver itself, do you just solder them or use push in terminal connectors. Might as well get a box of 50 for future expansion :-)

I'm always on the look out for old furniture that's solidly built for this purpose, one that would work well I think with high WAF is a foot of bed storage cabinet for a VNF. Perfect for a sofa and you can get them in different widths (twin, full, queen, eastern/western king)! Ottoman would be great too because of the volume but the wires might get in the way unless you come up from underneath if you have a raised floor and just have a quick disconnect mounted on the floor so you can move the ottoman if needed.

Okay, so here’s the deal. I have an iNuke6k DSP.

Currently have a Ultimax 18 in a full Marty cabinet.

Let’s say I sell that for $300.

I throw a little skin in the game, and buy 12 of these. Ported or sealed how big of an improvement would I get?

If anyone could take the time to model this, that would be great. I’d be using both channels of the iNuke so about 2000 watts total.

Leave it at 8 ohms and call it a day :)

3-4 JBL's are roughly equiv to one UM18, 3 being a little worse, 4 being a little better output wise, in comparable alignments. If using a 6k, you can't go below 4 ohms per channel. With 6 per side, wire two sets of three in series, then run those two in parallel for a 6 ohm load. Repeat for other channel. If it does ~2k into 4 ohms, it should output something around 1500 watts per channel into 6 ohms, which is more than enough.

You'd have more placement options which is always better too.

12" JBL speaker $29 on black friday at Bestbuy

If I do the magic square with 3 boxes of 3 on an nx3000d, can I place each box in a different part of the room or do they all need to be next to each other?

I have 4 but now I'm debating 5 more (darn you all) but don't think I can fit all 9 in one spot.

They don't need to be next to each other, though you do get some benefit in output if they are.
How far apart is "a different part of the room"?
If they're all along a back wall, that's obviously better than in front and in back or on different sides.
