6 UM-18/6 HT18 Subwoofer Log

9 Attachment(s)
I have several different threads and pictures in several different rooms as I have moved a couple time. I just wanted to start this "Subwoofer Thread" to have all of my pictures in a single thread.
Hopefully, Parts Express doesn't push back the OOS date any further on the UM18s. So with the countdown to 12/12/2017 and my last two UM-18s on order, I wanted to go ahead and start this thread as my subwoofer log which will have current, most recent pictures, and future ones.
I'm going to start with the most recent pictures first.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Currently: the system is 4 UM18s and 6 HT18s (4 v1s and 2 v2s). I have 2 UM-18s on back order.

The large dual 18 cabs are each wired to 8ohms and run on a single channel of a 6000DSP. The future plan is to eventually grab a more powerful amp for the dual cabs, and wire two of those together and back down to 4 ohms.
The single cabs on top of the dual cabs are 4ohms each, wired together for an 8ohm load and run off another channel on a 6000DSP.
The single cab HT18 v2s are wired to 4ohms and are powered by a 3000DSP.

I'm a little bit jealous right now! :D

Very nice! Having 12 - 18’s you can’t go wrong! Looks like your going to need a more expensive mic to measure your room now.

awesome room man..always impressed with the stuff you put together...

I'm confused about your wiring. If I'm not mistaken all of those drivers are dual 2 ohm coils. If so then you can get considerably more output by simply rewiring to the following;

each driver has it's coils in parallel for a 1ohm load x2 in series for both drivers in a cab (2ohm) x2 cabs in series means you have a 4 ohm load or each driver's coils in series for 4ohm with both drivers in a cab in parallel giving 2ohm per cab in series with the second cab giving 4 ohm total. The second option is best i reckon.

This still leaves the second channel of your amp available for the other subs.

Thanks guys!
Haven’t had much time to get back on due to work.

If anyone is thinking about new speakers in their future for some music or what not, y’all need to get some Statements.

Frenchfries, I’m a bit lost on your post to be honest. Maybe it’s the overtime, but your comment is very hard to follow. You completely lost me at “the 2nd option is best”. Honestly not sure if you gave two different possible wiring options for me or not. Either way, the cabs will be wired back down to 4ohm in the future. They are currently at 8ohm to plan for 4 ohms with less amps/channels.

O-Rings to cover some of the lights from the iNukes.
The last 2 UM-18s will go on top of the dual UM-18 cabs.

Nice update!

Now imagine if a couple of those UM18s were in a large ported cabinets......:eek:

Pradeep2 12-17-2017 04:22 PM

Is that a flat pack enclosure you are using for the dual 18s? Or something you built? How many cuft?

Looks great.

eng-399 12-17-2017 04:34 PM

Show them what happened to your ceiling fan from the bass. Haha

datranz 12-17-2017 06:42 PM

Technically on paper, they can’t.
But luckily I run bass hot, and not a fan of excessive treble (equal/flat treble and bass). So above reference bass, and -10db treble (MV)
When you consider the loudness curves, it goes together pretty well.

Dual cabs were built, not a flat pack. If you’re looking for one, keep an eye on the DIYSG home page. @Erich H is hopefully making some progress on getting them priced - but those are assembled already.
Estimated cu ft is around 6.5 each section.

Pradeep2 12-22-2017 02:03 PM

Thanks for the info. Ideally I could buy some of Erics dual opposed 18" flat packs but I believe he doesnt have any more suitable packaging for them to ship with. Will stick with the 4cuft flats once he has them back in stock.

Do you have dimensioned drawings for the dual cabs?

@Patzig would be able to answer that.

I don't have drawings, sorry. I scratch measurements down on paper, and build on the fly. These cabs were built efficiently though. Most possible wood used from 4'x8' mdf sheets, and I built them so that I wouldn't have to make hand cuts (4' too long for table saw) on the long 4' baffles. The cabs were built the exact length that the sheets were wide, if that makes sense.

EDIT: Need to update my profile pic, these are your cabs now :)

Looking good! How do the HTs and UMs compare? Any audible differences between the two? Do they blend well enough together?

There isn't much difference between the two drivers until you get past the limits of the HT18s. The UM18s are also better suited for low LFE due to their design so there is an output difference, rather than a SQ difference. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for and the value for each of these drivers are easily present. Overall, I enjoy the UM-18s more. Nothing but compact performance for a very reasonable price, especially with PE coupons and bundled prices.
