Sub changes HSTs Nearfield ds4’s ported

This thread had morphed into a build for my titan 615lx’s additional 15” bass bin. Wish I could edit the title to include that info too

Thanks to a good deal, I am changing up my subwoofer situation. I currently have:
Two mini Martys up front with si ds4’s
Two Cyclopes 18 up front with ds4’s
Two horizontal Martys in the rear ds4’s
Two nearfield mid bass modules

I will be changing all four ds4’s up front to SI HST-18’s. That will free up some drivers. I sold my nearfield mbm’s and thanks to the help of @eng-399 I have new nearfield boxes to build. I will build roughly 6cf net ported cabs tuned to 18ish HZ for nearfield duty. Everything checks out with port velocity staying well under 20ms. I will keep this thread updated with pics and smile emoji.
SBuger, filtor1, JCJetta and 6 others like this.

Nice Upgrade.. I hope you're planning on changing amplifiers also. HST18s can take Quite a bit of power. I have both DS4's in Full Martys and HST-18s in Mini Martys. With the same amount of power Sp SP2-8000 the HST's had more authority in my room. Even tested in the same locations.

Good Move.. Low Low bass should be better.

I certainly should. I ran one hst free air at reference with 12 hz material and the driver didn’t even get close to xmass. I did however clip my amp. Lol

I will post my cut list. Good idea. I have ordered all the panels cut to size from Mans Lumber. It was under 200 for two flat packs.

[email protected] 18 1/2 X 15 1/4 -side of port
[email protected] 28 3/4 X 2” -back port brace

This thread is primarily a build thread for my new nearfield cabs. I had a little extra time at work so I made a cardboard mock up. Not bad. They will just fit under the backs of the theater seats while reclining. I needed two boxes instead of one big box, even though one big box would’ve netted a lower tune, because my seats are a curved row, so I wanted to angle the individual cabs slightly to keep them tight to the seats.

Lol. No. Two of them are going into the nearfield boxes. That gives me only two extras. If I made a standby list for interested parties you’d be 5th as of now. Everyone wants them.

I figured as much but I thought I'd give it shot and ask
I'm really curious in how/if you perceive a difference in sound between the HST18 and the ds4. I used to believe bass is bass, but after hearing my ported HS24's vs my ported quad Mofo 15, I quickly realized there is a big difference in sound quality. So much so I've disconnected the 15s.

I will definitely be doing very close listening once the hst’s get installed. I have to get help, because they are so heavy. But I took max spl measurements with the ds4’s and I’ll compare with the hst’s.

So do you have two more hst18's that are not pictured or are you still looking to purchase 2 more? Also, are those Titans 615s? If so, how is the tweeter in regards to distortion at loud listening levels? I'm looking to diy my next setup of LCR and would really like a lively, crisp and clear sounding tweeter at loud listening levels during music listening sessions. Sorry for going off topic.

I have all four hst’s. Yes those are the Titan615lx. The tweeter is very smooth and I’ve never heard distortion at any volume level. I frequently listen at reference and they show no signs of slowing down in capability.

So after playing around with the new hst’s installed, only two of the four, holy smokes. That’s all I can say. After two more, and moving the two ds4’s to nearfield, it’s gonna be ridiculous. Effortless pant flapping bass. I can’t wait to get the others installed. Other then breaking things upstairs in my house. That I don’t want to do.

I had a realization. I currently have 10 18” subs in my basement at the time. Lol. Wish I could run them all at the same time.
