New Fi HT subwoofer lines

There has been a lot of discussion about the new Fi HT line of subwoofer drivers here: https://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-di...ternative.html

As it appears Scott is moving forward with the HT dedicated lines, I thought it would help if there was a thread with an appropriate title where people could bookmark or easily search for information on them.

As some may know, I just completed 2 of 4 subwoofers using a previous generation of the Fi Q that was modified for HT duty. I am excited to see Scott moving toward this market and look forward to seeing what he comes up with.

How will the HT models be altered from the car lineup?

I ask because I was interested in a few of the car subs but never got any info back from Scott. And so I hope it will mean just a few simple small changes is all.

A softer suspension and a few other changes to get these to work I'm waiting on more details from Scott.

This is the first pair. Ignore my wood working fails. I had back to back router bit failures.

I asked a few times now and have never gotten a reply.

Won’t be any FS specs for the higher two subs for a bit because he is finishing some other OEM work. He was just nice and got us the specs for the HT1

It would be great if he Fi would make a driver optimized for a small ported (stonehenge/martycube) sub as well as one tuned for a 4-6 cubic ft sealed box. Lord knows there seems to be need in the DIY subwoofer community.

If I read the other thread correctly, is the initial run of subs going to be an 18" for the Fi HT subs? I'd be in for a 15" version.

I saw some talk in the UM18-22 alternative thread about a possible group buy for the FI HT 18", is that still the case? If so, how does that work, I have never done a group buy from a forum before.

What a long.... strange trip it's been!!!

I only saw one comment in that thread from someone asking about a group buy but I have not seen anything official from Fi or anybody else. I chalk that comment up to “wishful thinking” at this point. Fi did say there would be a discount for an individual buying more than 4. Of course, I could have missed something.

I made a comment in that thread that I'd be in on a group buy. However, there currently is no group buy and I was merely planting the seed because often times group buys can help get these kind of projects off the ground, while also saving some cash.

I think I am finally in a position for a group buy as well if it were to come to fruition. I've been paying off other bills which has caused me to miss out on some great buys recently and I don't want to miss out on another potential winner. Sub'd for sure.

If group buy should happen, count me in for two 18s in the $300per range.

I'd be down for a GB for (2) 18s in the $300 range in about 2 months, assuming they can handle around 2kw RMS and would work well in a minimarty.

for the range of what works and how and the way things are managed,

google up the UXL group buy from about 3 years ago . ., it took awhile

props @Deven Deholos (iirc the spelling)

one person has to be the liaison to the manufacturer / builder

then it's IF? we can get X HT fans to commit to purchase, what sort of bulk price might the maker offer, say if we can get a demand for 100 or 200 or whatever X number of drivers

this of course puts some demand on the builder to deal with supply lines and time frames and provide realistic (as possible) delivery time frames,

then you get GB price

then a first come first serve list is generated by folks signing up and also making a deposit (50%) probably directly to the builder, he has to manage cash flow too...

then you wait . . .

in the mean time, work on room correction

so most of the "work" falls on the builder, managing lists and payments and shipping and on and on . .

so be cool about it . . .

Don’t people normally do group buys because they are getting things from China and they require and minimum order?

Lol, isn't a group buy a bit premature? Nobody even has any of these yet.

That said, I'm interested to see the t/s params for the HT2 and HT3. HT1 seems a good value, but I miss seeing some more heavy duty drivers.

^ how true . . . LOL

no one had any hesitation about UXL's, going for $400.

wish I'd bought 4 of them . .

so we need specs and modeling charts . . .

I probably wouldn’t do that for free again haha. The group buy was supposed to only be like 40 or so when it started then exploded into over 100 orders. It was a ton of work for about 2 weeks organizing the names, bugging people to get back to me with their shipping info, responding to messages, etc.. I didn’t think to track it but I bet I put 20+ hours into the whole thing. So anyone thinking of committing to organizing a group buy, be aware of the time commitment. If you can get the manufacturer to agree to reimburse you for time and nuisance of doing all that organization then I’d be more inclined to do it.

Just wanted to add some info from the other thread (Ultimax Alternatives) that seems pertinent here.

I think this is the right info/specs:
(From Scott @ Fi - originally posted by @Buddylee123 who has been in touch with Scott)
"Looks like we will have 3 lines going fairly soon. First (HT1) line is the one based off of an SSD, but instead of 3 magnets it will be 4 magnets for depth and clearance for the increased 28mm Xmax (38mm mechanical limit). Specs for the HT1 18(4 stack SSD) are: All US Steel waterjet and machined in house at Fi. FEA optimized 4 stack ferrite magnet motor structure. Integrated cooling channels standard. 8" progressive roll spider. 4 layer aluminum coil (round or flatwind depending on Ohm). Pressed kraft pulp cone with carbon fibers in the matrix. Carbon dustcap. Dual layer Rubatek foam surround. Opposed flat lead for linearity. 28mm Xmax (28mm Xmag vs 30mm Xmech) 38mm mechanical limit.

FS 20.9Hz

RE 2.95 Ohms (Nominal 4 Ohm)

QMS 5.74

QES .57

QTS .52

LE 3.53mH

VAS 218.9L

SD 1210cm^2

BL 19.36 N/A

CMS 105.148 um/N

MMS 551.2g

SPL 91.5 2.83V/1m*** or 87.2 1W/1m (***Note: the 2.83V/1m figure is misleading. It is only given here since it is the value used for the specs of the Ultimax 18. It is a poor value to use in comparing drivers as it is only relative to DCR. 2.83v/1m value is derived from an 8 Ohm load being 1 W. Wiring a dual 4 Ohm speaker in series would truly be 1W/1m but in parallel would be 4W/1m.... not fair)."

"Scott said the price should be $299 each and forum members can get a discount when 4 or more are purchased at one time."

I'll try to attach the specs from @Purenv in the other thread for the SP4 18” HT edition ($549)

Looks like a 320L cab for a 17hz tune. Still has a large inductance hump you would have to work around but around 850watts to hit Xmax. Nice driver as this seems closer to the old SI 18DS4.

I very well may not be modeling properly in WinISD, but I was getting ~2000w to hit xmax for an 11ft^3 (approximately 320l) enclosure tuned to 17hz (full marty).

Second (HT2)line will be a single magnet with thick inductance ring and look like a smaller version of an SP4 but with a 3" coil. Specs will be similar for QTS, VAS, and FS, to the HT1 but with a higher throw basket, 10" spider, and 34mm Xmax (52mm mechanical limit). The third (HT3) line will most likely be based off of the SP4 but with a 3" coil. Again it will have a thick inductance ring and 34mm Xmax (52mm mechanical), but lower QTS/higher BL and increased power handling over the other lines.
