Custom Volt-6 Center

Design goals:
1. Less than 7" tall at the front (but able to accomodate a Volt-6), and less than 6" tall by the time it gets 5" deep (to fit under the TV)
2. Tuned at or below 70Hz to be able to crossover at 80Hz
3. Able to use a pair of the PE 1.5" dia. 4" long ports recommended by mtg to achieve that tune

Outside dimensions:
Height - 7" at front, 5.25" at back (tapered @ 13 degrees)
Width - 23.75"
Depth - 6.75"

The front is 3/4" birch plywood, the rest 1/2"
Inside volume comes out to 0.38 cf, tuning 70Hz

Edit: The resonance turned out to be a room issue and the speaker itself is perfect!
Spoiler!

Is it possible that a room mode could manifest as a resonance like this? One thing I did as a test was stuff the ports with thick socks the resonance was still there.

Move the speaker to a different location in the room like out in the middle of the floor and test it again. If it's the room then it should change with the speaker in a different position.

It was easy enough for me to bring it outside to test. I'm happy to report that the speaker itself shows no discernible resonances, and unhappy to report that it is thus a room issue which may be difficult or impossible for me to fix. I can't really move it or the MLP much at all.

I am sorry the design isn't working in your room, but I do appreciate you posting the detailed specs of your build. I have been looking to get the HTM-10s for L/R, but require a smaller horizontal center and just thought of the Volt's coaxial drivers. This thread gives me food for thought, many thanks.

ETA: And now that I'm looking at the DIYSG site I see that the Volt-6 is out of stock. Oh well, back to the drawing board...

I wonder if it might be exciting the furniture it's sitting on? Is it on some pads or feet or anything to decouple it?

Oh, don't get me wrong, it's working, and working very well! It is a slight nitpick, but overall, the speaker is fantastic.

Good thought. I wanted to angle the box up slightly, so I actually only put rubber feet on the front. I thought of this and actually lifted the back up while playing a 94 Hz test tone and I'm pretty sure it didn't change anything, but I'll double-check.

That's great to hear. I hope you can find and remedy the cause of the ringing, and I'll have to keep my eyes open for the Volt-6s coming back.

Question for you (or anyone), if you don't mind:

I was thinking of getting 2 Volt-6 kits to build a center with both coaxial drivers (or just 1 kit and pick up the 2nd CX-06 and DNA-150 as separates, wired series then parallel) for a wider center speaker with greater dispersion as my room is a living room. As I am no speaker/crossover designer I wonder if you think this would work? I haven't run it through WinISD yet to get exact dimensions or porting but have no issues doing so, just wondering if my idea is completely off base or not.

Really do appreciate your input!

The reason you never see this done is it will suffer from severe beaming as the two tweeters cancel each other out at certain frequencies.

The comb filtering would actually give you less dispersion.

Exactly the type of input I needed guys, thanks. Wondered why I hadn't seen it done that way.

And special thanks to @moosifee for the visual, exactly what my little brain needed to wrap around

Enough of my hijacking aron7awol's thread, as you were...
