Another screw up!

So I didn't have my side panel attached (it's the one I left open) and rough fit it in so I could cut my slot port. Well I forgot while routing and the side popped out... That has been the story of this build folks!

The worst part is I thought my wife was pregnant post vasectomy (like my op didn't work). I was so pissed! I'm done at 2 sets of subs. The LRK ULF subs will be next. I'm sticking to 7.4.4
Here's the solution!

Denim Insulation

I ended up using denim insulation as my filler. MBM's especially can have a resonant effect without polyfill. I had great luck with Denim in my basement build. Actually, I used double 3/4" drywall, Green glue between every sheet, denim insultion, R13 fluffy stuff, and staggered studs... But I liked the denim. If you put your ears right next to it, it'll make you a bit dizzy because it grabs so much sound.
I used spray glue to hold it into place and then a light spray over the top to keep the denim together.

Anyone have any suggestions for non-spiked speaker feet? I think the highest I can go is 2” to 3”

Given that I'm on concrete already, I may just take some MDF and stain it dark and have "runners or skis" on the bottom to elevate it.

Why not just set it on a Auralex subdude?

I have to say reading your build thread has been quite entertaining. I'm glad your enjoying your build though, if i had the roomor the tools I wouldn't mind trying a little DIY

interesting idea! I have a bunch of auralex that I'm not using. I could just set it on that. I need to have the sides open so I can slide them over the feet of my Paradigm Prestige towers.

Thanks for reading it! I felt like it was falling on deaf-ears at certain points. It's been an adventure. I waited about 6 months to get the right tools. After purchasing some of these tools, I pretty much have to build another pair. I'm sure if I mess up this veneer, I'll be using them even more for a new box

Thanks all! I put one of the speakers in and screwed it down last night without issue. I'm running the wire through the port until I can get things veneered. Tonight I'll run some content through (without calibration). I'd run REW but the ASIO4All driver doesn't work with the new nVidia drivers (by new I mean ones in the last 6 months). I'll likely install the old driver to run REW.

I also sanded down each side with 80 grit, 150 grit, and 220 grit with an orbital sander. It looks a lot cleaner. I clearly didn't cut my recessed baffle deep enough. The speaker sticks out more than 1/2". It has these foam surrounds which I'm not thrilled about. I'm going to contact Erich at DIYSG and see if they can be taken off. Also, it's super likely I'll be putting a standard cloth grill on it because of where I need to place them.
My next step is to add a 1/2" baffle which I'll have to cut and then match the current baffle with a flush trim bit. That will fully recess the driver.

One thing I didn't like was how much this driver extruded and it did not look good so I needed to add a 1/2 baffle AFTER cutting the original hole. This proved to be more difficult than I thought...

The problem was that the flush trim bit bearing was too deep. What I needed to do was acutally line up a baffle cut out right over the top and have something under it to elevate it. Ultimately, I broke apart a paint stir-er and used those chips on the corners. Keep in mind that my box is so small that chips interfered with the routing.

notice the groove that the bottom of that bit left. It was smoking. I was in the ferver of getting this done so I didn't grab realtime pics of the solution but here's an example

With that additional routing after the box was built it caked my cabinet with MDF dust! I needed to remove the insulation and vacuum it out.

Insulation tip

I had great luck with Denim in my basement, so initially I pulled some from the ceiling and brought it in. I didn't intend on doing that initially but my order from Home Depot for these small batts didn't arrive. Well they arrived and they are great. For $11 you get a perfectly small roll of 4' x 2' x 2" tall denim. It's so clean to work with. I'm building some accoustic panels and I'm definitely using it for those. That roll was so much less unruley than the batt which isn't terrible but certainly harder to work with and involves more tearing. I also got a little glue spreader for $1.29 at menards which helped distribute the glue
I used spray glue which made things so much easier to adhere to the walls.

2 things to note here: look at the tiny gap I have to veneer. Needless to say this made me nervous. I needed to get a flush downtrim bit. I'll see if I can find a bit. Second, check out how clean this tiny denim roll is to work with

Veneering that tiny gap...

Needless to say I was pretty nervous about veneering given how I've screwed up at every turn. I ended up biting the bullet and going with contact cemeent vs Iron on wood glue. It worked great and was easier than I could have ever imagined.

I purchased 3'x 8' veneer which worked great because I didn't need to do any joining and I was able to get away with 1 sheet. I purchased a downtrim flush bit which pulls the veneer down vs toward it to prevent it from ripping.

For the contact cement I used the VOC stuff and wax paper. It was super easy, put the contact cement down on the MDF and veneer let it dry for 20 minutes, laid down wax paper, lined it up, pulled out the wax paper and used my glue roller (which broke), then used a plastic putty knife.

I was also worrying about cutting the veneer but it's paper backed and was able to use a scissors and it cut like construction paper.
Here is a link to where I got information about veneering: https://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-d...ng-veneer.html
Here is the down flush bit I used

I went with 2x2 (1.5x1.5" nominal) lumber and cut it into 12" sections. Naturally, you'd expect with this build that something would go wrong... I glued them to the wrong side!

Thank you much! I still have the final finishing to do and then there's a potential gain matching issue with the amp. I'll post a link to that here after I can really dig in and test.

Magnets before the veneering for grills

My Paradigm's have magnetic grills and I really liked that and wanted to emulate it. I posted a thread here on how I should do that: https://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-d...ts-grills.html
The advice that I took was simply putting a screw in prior to putting on the veneer. I picked up some tiny (strong) "rare earth" magnets and I can confirm they stick to the screw through the veneer.

I spent $60 or more on stain matching not to mention all of my spare veneer and a weekend or 2. This is the closest I could get it and here is my first coat of Danish Oil. I'm doing 2 coats of Danish Oil and then 3 of water based satin poly. I'm hoping it'll match better with the poly.

You’re finally getting there, man! Good job. That’s a nice Whiteside bit you bought that can come in handy for many projects.
Good luck with the finishing process.

shake Satin Poly well!

So I should have just left the danish oil on. My plan was to put on some poly and buff it with a 3m white pad. Well I didn't shake my second coat of Satin Poly well and it left clouding. I needed to actually attempt to sand down the poly and recoat with danish oil. It was pretty defeating. Nevertheless, I basically cut my losses. The boxes are a touch lighter than I'd like because of it.

Overall lesson: if you use a Satin Poly, shake it well!

Everything that could go wrong did every step of the way and I still ended up with some nice looking boxes. Now I need to make them sound nice! They seem to fit with the room well. I was dealing with some serious space constraints. They are right next to my mains so I hope the blend well! Last task is going to be create some speaker grills!

They appear to fit well in the room too!

Finally got the grills done

I used Mellotone speaker cloth from PE. It was more expensive but it certainly looks nice. I had a hard time cutting a stretching it (operator error) and could have used an extra set of hands. I got 1/2" square dowels and stapled them which held surprisingly well. I chamferred the edges with my router which was tough and is by no means perfect. I should have build a platform to run the router on instead of balancing it on the 1/2 dowel. The thickness of the speaker cloth and the sloppiness of my cutting and stapling resulted in me having to use 2 rare earth magnets to get the grill to get the magnets close to the magnets behind the veneer. In retrospect, I should have put in 4 magnets instead of 2. I have no idea if it will hold while the speaker is pounding. I may use double sided tape to hold them on.

The final look!

All in all they look really good in my space IMO. I hope the grills hold. Now I need to figure out the Amp and gain noise idiosyncrasies and they will officially be done! I hope to post REW graphs in the coming week.

The Amp Saga and End

The Crown XLS 2002 issue

So I had some serious issues getting the proper sound out of the Crown Amp even at .775v. It was brought up that a cleanbox would pump the gain. However, it made a large thud if I turned it off in the wrong order and I also didn't like all of the cords and (right or wrong) I didn't trust it.

You can enjoy the long threads here:

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-d...rown-amps.html
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-d...ng-so-far.html

The bridged amp solution

I tried some consumer amps and got great results. So I began to search eBay and bought 2 Rotel 981's that I can run in mono for an alleged 360W. They sound great. In classic AVS fashion I figured I'd try to blend via active crossover the MBM's with the mains and then run double bass (fronts to large).

Blending the mids and fronts with no LFE

So in order to do that I needed another amp (Rotel 981) in stereo and a MiniDSP 2x4HD because the regular miniDSP is not high fidelity enough for full range (and I needed the ports).

Input sensitivity issue (I think)

I had the same issue as I did with the pro amp and MiniDSP HD. I speculate it had to do with the input sensitivity on my NAD.

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/91-au...l#post57157676

So that went out the window. I needed to return the MiniDSP HD and one of the amps (on ebay, not easy).

Testing the heat

I ran a test and pounded gravity at -15dB with the subs at full range (which is loud for me) and let it run for 5 hours and left the room. I came downstairs and felt in the tight media console, it wasn't super warm. But I still didn't want them running full time.

Power Management

The older amps didn't have triggers and would pull a bit of power and heat. So now I needed a trigger enabled powerstrip. A Panamax 5300M-PM caught my eye. They are $500 new but I found one on Audiogon for $175, it was damaged in shipping but the only real issue is one LED is out.

Closing the show
Now I just need to sell the Crown on Flea-Bay, sell my old Atmos audiosource amps, and send my NAD in for warranty fix for their Atmos pre-out bug. Then it's done!
I love the sound and I think Dirac really blends it well. I'm going to run MSO given that I'm running these near full range. I plan on adding a HPF at 20Hz for protection but that's basically full-range.

Thank you for posting all these details. I'm thinking about doing something similar (adding mid bass modules, but smaller ones).

So if I understand this correctly, you've got no LFE on the AVR, and instead set the front LR as large. Then you feed that to the MiniDSP 2x4HD, 2ch for front LR, and the other 2ch for MBM LR, is that correct?

How did you end up choosing your crossovers? How did you gain / SPL match LR and MBMs?

It's complicated. I went with a traditional set up. LFE -> MiniDSP -> 2x MBM's and 2x Subs.

What I tried to do was go LR Pre-out -> MiniDSP HD -> input 1 to output 1 Left output 2 MBM left & input 2 output 3 to left and output 4 to right MBM -> 2 bridged amps + stereo amp. Then run it in Large mode for potential double bass. I was gonna set the XO at 120Hz

Ultimately, due to the input sensitivity issue, I was never able to fully test.

So I'm going with the traditional setup. The MBM's get the LFE+Crossed over signals which I have everything crossed at 110Hz except the center. I left that at 80Hz.
In short: It was either running the MBM's as mains vs running them as subs. I had to do subs due to output/input sensitivity issues..
I believe @Trimlock tried both and said it was negligible.

However, In your case, if you're using smaller drivers you may want to use that blend method which will require a MiniDSP and an amp for each of those inputs on the MBM and Left and Right channels respectively and you can play with crossovers in there.
