What to do for subs?

OK- so I built me some Titans for my front stage this summer, and my poor little pair of HSU VTF-15H’s just aren’t manly enough to keep up. Not that I’m surprised by this- building a pair of subs to compliment the Titans was always part of the plan. Now, I’m getting close to executing said plan, but I need some advice picking drivers.

These will be primarily for HT, and strong ULF is definitely a goal. I had been considering UM-18’s in Mini Marty-sized cabs, or possibly one of the new Fi HT models when they hit, but then I came across some builds using B&C 21DS115-4‘s. Gotta’ be honest, I’m kinda’ smitten by them. Looking at Seaton’s X21 box design- something close to that could work for me size-wise.

Is there any good reason to choose either of those 18’s over the DS115, knowing that I’m just looking to roll with two boxes for the foreseeable future? Any pros/cons I should consider? Would likely power any of the above with an NX6000D (when they release). Thoughts or suggestions?

Isn't that your answer then?

Price obviously.

Although I’m waiting for the release of the Fi HT1 for my next driver purchase. Handmade in the USA, I’m gonna support them and their company.

Well- yeah, it's getting close to being the answer! I think my original post fails to ask the correct, specific questions. Let's amend:

- I like the idea of the increased cone area and efficiency over the UM, but with the DS115 being more of a pro style woofer, am I going to be giving up ULF in order to get those benefits?

- Is an X21 style box going to present significantly bigger challenges for a novice builder compared to a Marty cab?

- For those who either own or have heard the B&C's, are there any pros/cons you'd want to tell me about?

From just what I've been able to read and research, it sounds like a slam dunk to go with the DS115's, but I want to make sure there's not something I'm failing to consider, here. I'm still a little lean on real-world experience with this stuff.

Can the B&C 21DS115-4 handle ultra-low frequency like an 18 in a Marty can? If you can get all the response you want out of that driver that would be a plus. I will be adding 2 Dayton Audio PN470-8's in custom boxes sometime down the line because I want to maximize my chest kick. I see a lot of people here recommend doing a Marty and a midbass model but that might not be needed with this driver.

The PN-470 is a great driver especially if you can catch them on sale. I have one in a 9cuft cab tuned to 19Hz and it rocks. I’m surprised more people don’t use them, they have more Xmax and can handle more power than the PA460.

Nice, I didn't know they went on sale, I will definitely wait for that.

This has been discussed in just about every build thread and regular thread posted. You're not going to be told anything different

That's pretty much my $20 question, here. Though, I sadly can't award $20 to the winning answer....because I need to be saving for some subs!

Well, as a newb who just built his first DIY mains, and has yet to ever build subs, I don't know what I don't know.

Putting the extra ~$600 premium on drivers aside for a moment, all things being otherwise equal and assuming optimally sized and tuned enclosures are in play, it looks to me like a pair of 21" DS115's are going to noticeably best a pair of UM18's in terms of output, efficiency, and distortion while keeping pace in terms of ULF. Am I on the right track, here?

I think you know the answer to that question.

To my knowledge, not one person who has purchased the B&C 21DS115-4 has complained about the lack of ULF.

Ah- don't know how or why I didn't realize those were the drivers in eng-399's setup. That, by itself, kinda' tells me what I needed to know. Thanks!
