Suggest some DIY LCRs

Hello all. I'm going with a marty cube sub, so I will have quite a bit of low output. Needing some LCRs. Originally I was set on DIYSG S2000s. But have decided to look for something with more output. I have rearranged my entertainment center and have the following dimensions.

Left and Right would be on entertainment center shelves. Max dimensions are 12.5H x 15D x 17W. With such little height, I was hoping to take advantage of the width and possibly lay them horizontal provided the alignment wouldn't be off.

Center can be as wide as necessary with a max height of 10", so may need to be horizontal as well. Things that would work:

1) Cobalt-8 for L and R and MTM for center.
2) HTM-6s. I just don't know if the SEOS-8 waveguide will still sound proper horizontal.
3) Ares MT
4) Helix Dome MT
5) S2000 MTMs

In general should the center channel be more capable of high output than the L and R?

Audio: Denon AVR-X3400H - Behringer NX6000D | (LCR) DIYSoundGroup Cobalt 8s | generic surrounds (for now) | ULF: Marty cube w/ Ultimax UM18 | Mid-bass: Four JBL CS1214s sealed @ 1.5cf each
Automation: Fire Cube - Harmony Hub- Insteon Plugs - Sensi Thermostat
Video Image: TCL 55S517 - Roku - Fire Cube - Xbox One X

I would go with 3 sealed volt-8's in custom boxes. You can build them to fit you needs and as long as the internal volume is equal they will sound the same. Also, this gives you good output and matching lcr.

+1,

Since you are building the speakers to fit the space--compromises must be made. The coaxial 8" has the midbass to blend with your Marty and the efficiency to give you the SPL required. You are dealing with strict size requirements so the HTM-6 is out as the horn does not work horizontal. Speakers can last 30 years so the configuration is not ultimately set in stone, those 8" coaxials make great surrounds so can be rebuilt in the future to perform that function. You gain a ton of flexibility how to build the boxes, what size and shape so I'd go with the Volt 8 coaxials to allow better and more flexible design choices as you try to flush them with shelves.

If that is not your thing, then I'd choose the Cobalt 8's next--they fit the sizes and have 92dB efficiency for the L/R and 94dB for the MTM center--reasonable load on your amplifiers.

Good luck with what you choose and enjoy your build!

+1 as well, although I would personally lean to the ported version (front, as they will be sitting in an entertainment center) to allow them to dig a little deeper. They can handle it.

Sub builds: Yet another Infinity 1260 build | Twins! | Modified V.B.S.S. build | UM12-22 builds | AV stand and sealed UM18s

Speaker builds: DIYSG HTM-10 build | DIYSG Volt-6 build | DIYSG Fusion-8 builds

I too have the Volts 8's... At first I had some issues with them but the issue was builder error. Once I wired them correctly, OMG! I bought these for surrounds to go with my Titan 615's but used them as mains for a while and I thought these sound amazing. Crisp and detailed, nice mid-bass they feel very "live". I was watching Pink Floyd's The Wall, the neighbors came over to watch because the mentioned it sounded so good at their house, they couldnt guess how well they sounded in mine

Seriously though... I'd use them as mains in a smallish theater any day

Wow thanks all. I would never have thought of that. Any idea what box size I should go with? I assume the volume of Eric's boxes should be copied?

Box size is up to you as you are fitting them into your very specific constraints but yes, keep the same internal volume as the original design.

Also, if going ported, try to keep the depth about the same to give the ports a similar load as the original design.

I just built a 3 Cobalts in the exact configuration you posted. I couldn't be happier. My room is just a smidge bigger than yours.

Volt 8s out of stock. Cobalts in stock. Easy choice. So went with two Cobalt8's for L/R and a Cobalt 8MTM for center.

Do a build thread and give us your impression of the Colbalt if you can. I might go with those too but there’s not many build of them yet.

I will for sure. My guess it will take some time as I'm building 2 subs as well.

I see a lot of recommendations for volt 8 but wouldn't 10 also be an option?

10s would work in the dimension restrictions for L/R, but OP's height restriction of 10" total on the center led to my suggestion of the 8s. No reason he couldn't mix them up, 10s for L/R, 8 for center.

I have also read that dispersion is a bit better in the 8s vs. the 10s, but have no first-hand experience with that.
