New dayton reference subwoofer drivers!

This is the 12" model. Apparently they'll be the reference RSSHE (HE stands for high excursion). No idea on pricing, but they should come in all sizes. The 18 should be a brute judging by the motor they put on that 12.

Will be interesting to see how this stacks up against the UM18. Guess dayton is prepping for upcoming competitors. It's being said that the geometric x-max is ~30mm, and we all know dayton drivers will hold up far beyond that. If it's anything like the HO or the UM18, we could be looking at closer to 38mm clean.

COOL!

That looks like there is potential for a formidable contender!

YES! Is there still enough time for me to return my UM18?

Leave it at 8 ohms and call it a day :)

Is there any sort of proposed release date for the 18s?

I wish I knew. I'd assume soon. I will be digging deep (no pun intended) on any info I can find on these and will update as soon as I find more details.

At first I looked at the thread title and thought oh just an update of the 18" Reference model which has a little less than Ultimax in the deep bass then I saw the tall boy surround like an HST and got excited. Question is what the pricing is going to be, and also assuming they have shorting rings like the ultimax.

So these have the aluminum cone from the Reference series and surrounds from the Ultimax series? Guessing different motor structure?

LMAO! I remember about 10 or so years ago, I bought my first RSS HO 12" and was so astounded by the performance, I came on here [I think? Might have been another forum, all I know is the person I am talking about is a member here] being a huge fanboy. I was just so impressed, I wanted to let everyone know. Then this guy comes on and starts attempting to shut me down because it was a Parts Express driver. Slammed the speakers PE sold as nothing any serious listener would ever "trouble themselves with".

Fast forward a few years and suddenly, PE is the go to place for DIY that usually blows the competition away. Anywho, just wanted to say it matters not which PE driver you get, you'll love it.

I wonder if this is merely an updated version of the HO line or if they went fully high end?

Very nice! I hope the recommended enclosure volume stays the same or improved upon by requiring a smaller enclosure.

Guessing by that triple-stacked magnet, I would think the latter. Probably a new flagship driver. Wonder if power handling was upped a significant amount. Could be the replacement for the LMS 5400 everyone is looking for...?

What leads me to believe this might just an updated version of the HO line is that triple stacked really doesn't mean much by itself (UM18 is also triple stacked) and its not using NEO. There are some high end drivers still using Ferrite so maybe?

I'll wait to see more on this, I didn't think PE was in the game to be in the high end mode like this.

I also can't see the pictures right now to compare to the UM motor.

That would make sense too. I guess it makes more sense in all realness since Dayton was never out there to be super expensive. But regarding the NEO’s, competition subwoofer companies like Sundown, PSI, DC, etc, each have maybe one line of NEO drivers (Most even aren’t actually released yet ) but the rest are ferrite so I would be lead to believe that ferrite is still going strong.

Leave it at 8 ohms and call it a day :)

The surround looks to be significantly taller than the ultimax surround. Spider looks much thicker as well.

No doubt. I thought it was mentioned something like 30+mm xmax. That is a significant upgrade over the UM, if all other components are in the same league.

all we know is it has upgrade spiders, voice coil, uses the UM surround and an extra magnet (no idea if the size is bigger).

Sounds like it could be better, but I'd wait. Just because it has more xmax doesn't immediately mean it will be better than the UM.

I dunno. When we are talking apples to apples (12's to 12's), I'm not so sure the surround is the defining difference. This is the PE image of the UM12

Been using my OG dual Dayton reference for about 8 years with the PE bash 300 plate amps. They have treated my great and sound quality has always impressed me. Wouldn't mind a new project with dual 15" or 18" sealed and some real power this time.

It seems as if costs have risen a lot over the last few years. I wouldn't be surprised if, knowing folks are already spending 200 for a 12 and 325 for an 18, they figure their path to profit is to sell an even more capable driver and charge more for it.

The issue is often selling enough of a "specialized" driver...we see the nice gent from SI mention this frequently in response to people asking why are you ending the XYZ driver? Or....why did TC go under? What happened to Chase/Chane etc....

If like the ultimaxes they can do sealed or ported well, I would think many here would willingly pay more for more capability....and Dayton has had an good track record (imo) of offering drivers for along period of time and supporting them well.

Dont be surprised if they discontinue the old HO and HF series...they are long past their prime time imo.

Yes there seems to be a market between the $325 UM18 and the $800 SI HST-18. Where Fi and Pierce provide US built options like the SI. If the new 18 can come in under $500 I think there'll be some takers. Having triple shorting rings like the standard ref should provide for nice even response and low distortion. I think they'll still keep the original one around though, as you say Dayton has generally been pretty good with support for drivers over time.

Old Dayton reference still have their place, particularly as woofer in multiway designs as a low distortion but less expensive option than similarly performing SB, Seas, ScanSpeak etc.

I have a feeling we'll see an Ultimax MK2 soon as well with these coming out. Dayton is no stranger to driver updates, and the um18 is around 4 years old now. Those who remember the dayton titanic series will know they have 4 revisions of that one.

Agreed - I'm interested as well! I have been checking the PE website every few days in hopes that they have an update with the new Reference Series drivers. I was going to bump this back to the top of the DIY forum a few weeks ago, but never got around to it.

PE is going to have a spot at Axpona and I am hoping they will have some of these drivers on display. I will see what kind of info I can get out of them if they do have them there.
