Um18-22 Sealed build with laminate

I finally finished my first DIY project!

Its a UM18-22 in the PE sealed flatpack. Power is from a iNuke 6000. DSP support is from a MINIdsp 2x4HD.

Finish is black paint and laminate on the 4 sides.

All the details can found in my sweet video! Please subscribe if you can!

Nice video. Looks like it turned out really well.

I still love the look of that laminate. I'm kind of surprised people don't use laminate more often. It makes for such a nice and clean finish.

I know that whatever I build in the future I will use laminate - as long as the speakers aren't going to be hidden behind a screen or something.

Nice work.

I turn the sharpness on my TV all the way up, because that's how I like my picture... real sharp.

Looks great! Only thing I'd say is not to have loose pollyfill like that. It can get caught up into the coil and make a god awful mess.

Blasting brown notes for 10 years and counting!

nice laminate

Wow, your laminate looks great.
Points deducted though for going the flatpack route. Sorry, others may disagree on this but I prefer all DIY.

If bad sound were Faital, good sound would be almost impossible

One day I might graduate to a table saw, etc.. but not today. The lack of a work space makes it pretty tough to do big cuts, etc.

Actually I would like to see all of these cool designs be converted to CAD drawings with CNC commands that people could use at local maker shops.

so I have a question on the laminate. I'm guessing it's not very thick, but how do you get the exposed edges to not show being that you painted the face(the edges on the end of the laminate that face the front baffle). Or am I overthinking this?

No, you're not overthinking it. I was concerned about it as well. Check out the last few posts of my build thread (in my signature) to see how I handled it.

Good job! I am going to be veneering my speakers and they too have a round over edge on the front baffle. I was trying to determine if I was to paint the front baffle first, then veneer since I'll be spraying it with poly, or lay the veneer first, spray it, then tape off the veneer and paint the baffle. After reviewing your process, I think I'm going to go with the latter.

It is quite thin. 2mm or slightly less maybe? I just cut it and glued in on. I didn't do anything to try to hide the edges. Some folks have said they tried black pens... but for me I couldn't really notice the edge once it was all glued down.

Buuuttt, as you can tell from the video I am no laminate expert!!! It looks fine to me though.

If you are going to stain the veneer I would do all that first then spray the front.
