My wife loves the home theater... She loves the TV room... She loves the outdoor theater... BUT when she wanted Christmas music and didn't want giant speakers in the front room she got what she wanted, small hidden bookshelf speakers. She said the whole house does not and cannot look like a Best Buy show room and I agree.

Other side of the coin, when I came home from a week long camp and found that same front room painted in a gross orange I immediately dubbed "pumpkin puke" I pulled "HAF" and said it must go. It did. Its a give and take compromise. No harm done. Just gotta communicate with each other.

She hates the 2 giant refrigerator full Martys in the theater/game room, not because of the sound, but its taking up space where she wants an air hockey table, so we are still working on that one. :-)

Real WAF is when your wife accepts you for who you are, including your hobbies that make you happy even if she doesn't fully understand them, and doesn't try to tell you what you can and can't do with them.

You can always use the kids to aid in WAF, assuming your afflicted with such a thing, (WAF, not kids). Hide the equipment in a video game themed fridge.

Well said.

I got into the sauce a bit and got all soft & schmoopy with the old lady and thanked her for letting me do foolish things like my 30 JBL project. By "letting" I mean I just tell her about what I'm excited about doing and she helps me figure out how we'll move furniture/etc around optimum speaker positioning. I really just go do what I want, how and when I want.

Without batting an eye, she said that she feels like even though I'm busy with multiple jobs (one is starting a new company), the projects are good for my mind/mental health, plus she used to run a school that teaches music to disadvantaged children... so she, too, believes the music matters. Humbling.

Past partners were not always that understanding... (and that's why they're in the past). The good ones that help facilitate the small joys in life are amazing.

Yea sorry but that doesn't work for everyone. I don't think that is 'real WAF'. 99% of wives are not going to let you put JTR 215s in a normal living room situation, but that doesn't mean she doesn't like you or isn't accepting, that's just plain dumb. I think it's perfectly normal for someone to not want obnoxiously stupid looking speakers in a living room. Now if your wife is demanding what a dedicated theatre room should look like, that's a whole separate issue.

I hear ya, maybe I should said the ultimate WAF rather than the real WAF. I realize every wife is different, and certain things might be more important to one than another. It wasn't meant to be discounting the other WAF examples in this thread (I love seeing these builds!). It just feels like the ultimate WAF for those of us fortunate enough to have free-reign, so to speak, as far as builds and where we put them.

Mostly kept things simple until i drilled four holes in my ceiling, then watched an Atmos movie and all was good.
Then to test some waters I added two "test" VBSS's behind the couch and they were huge in her eye, then we watched an action movie. They are still there. Just to see how far I can take this I built two F-20's for under the screen and nothing...... GAME ON!!!

Where are you going to put (4) 18" subs?...

Right there!

Where are all those other speakers going again?

3 in the front, 2 in the back, and 4 in the ceiling.

4 in the ceiling?

4 in the ceiling.

That'll look dumb.

It'll be OK -- what color you want the ones in the ceiling to be?

I guess black, to match the other ones.

OK, that sounds good.

Obvioulsy its not all the same, but thats why I have an issue with the word "WAF" itself. I dont care who pays for what, If I have a hobby and I want to be creative and do something in life that entertains me (the purpose of life), its complete BS that I have to first get it approved by someone else other than myself.

That lamp table VBSS box is beautiful, but that guy didnt need to throw ideas around and go from an unfinished VBSS box to something like that. He just built it and used his creativity and skills.

Speaking only of my own relationship, just because I do pretty much whatever I want including with my speakers and she just accepts it doesn't mean for one second that I treat her like crap. I don't expect dinner but instead appreciate it every single time she makes it. It's a two way street, we both contribute plenty, and we both get to do what we want. "Happy wife, happy life" doesn't have to mean "Do whatever she says". At the end of the day, do those huge speakers in our living room do anybody any harm? If someone comes in our house and they don't like it, quite frankly, they can leave. It doesn't hurt that we watch almost everything together and both appreciate the sound, but she still thinks I'm crazy and that the system is fine and I don't need to keep upgrading it. I realize I am extremely fortunate to have the relationship I have, but I'm saying, it is possible to do whatever we want and still have her be happy. We're both extremely laid back and only worry about things that really matter in the grand scheme.

I get it, but it still puts your hobby under approval lol. If I had the wife I wanted Id do everything to make her happy too, but theres a difference between doing something to make her happy because you want to, and doing something to make her happy because you have to. Im not saying to fight with your wife for speakers you want lol, People just need to do what they want to do and if you want big speakers you should be able to do that, If you want to make your wife happy then go do that. I wont for a second be ok with having to do something that makes me unhappy, while trying to enjoy a hobby I like in life, to make someone else happy, I wouldnt do that to someone and I wouldnt want them to do it to me.

Way wrong buddy..... its about mutual respect.... a GROWN ASS MAN should not have to ask anyone for permission to do anything in their own house. Should compromises be made in the interest of BOTH parties? Absolutely....BUT that "mommy may I" mentality and happy wife/ happy wife is ALL THE BS and a one sided servants mentality....

Can you tell her what to do or not do with her hobbies? I bet not..... then she should have no say in yours.
That's all I'm saying.....

Exactly right Sir..... that is how a relationship should be.....

Married. Don't need approval, or permission, to buy the stuff I want. She gets to reap the rewards of my electronics knowledge.

Time to man up and be the man of the house. Not a mouse in the corner.

Please show me where I said ANY of that ..... My point is that a GROWN ASS MAN..... SHOULD NOT need permission from his SO to enjoy his hobbies in his house.....

As I stated elsewhere..... Does she ask your permission about her hobbies?...... MOST women I would say nope. Therefore, she has no say in mine. Compromise? sure....final say.....NOPE.

I've never asked my wife for permission with my hobbies, although including her has made it pretty special. Even when she gives me the "you're retarded" look.
