HTM-12 vs 1099 DIYSG (2-way vs 3-way)

I have searched and searched and can’t seem to find a direct comparison of the HTM-12 vs. the 1099. One is a 2-way one is a 3-way, but I guess I don’t understand, scientifically, why I would prefer one over the other? After lots of reading, the clarity of the mids is why to choose the 1099? But has anyone listened to both and have a direct comparison of which is better?

I don't listen at reference, usually around -10db. I can fit either one, I would have to make some adjustments for 1099, but it will work. They are not behind a baffle wall either. I sit 9ft away from the center channel and 12ft away from the LR. Maybe for my listening distance, a HTM-10/8 or (rumored) 899 would be a better fit? I know this forum is all about overkill, but if I don’t get the benefits of the larger speakers at my listening distance, then I’d rather get what’s best for my situation. I don’t mind waiting for an 899 if someone can clearly explain why/if I’ll have a better listening experience with a three way speaker vs the 2-way htm. Does listening distance matter as much for an ideal sized 2-way? Do I really need a SEOS 15 waveguide at my listening distance? All these questions aren’t because of budget, all options are similarly priced enough for it to not matter to me, I just want to know which is best for my particular situation.

I have two 21’s and two 18’s for subs handling the low end, so that’s not an issue as I realize neither speaker option digs very deep. Just looking what will be the best upgrade from my current volt 10 LCR I’m using so I can move those bad boys to surround duty.

If I can fit both in the room, is it a no brainer to go with a 99 over an HTM? I understand you can't go wrong with any as I've read a million times in other threads, but I'm interested in why I'd choose one over the other. Hopefully this helps someone else also trying to decide between the HTM or 99’s!

I love my F15's ! bc? > that SEOS horn.

I sit 11 ft, mol from the L/R

I know for the HTM12 the xo is different as is the CD

BUT! More often than not for music, most "legacy' stereo- any type of music, the F15's , (xo is 80) with subs -

hard to think of how it could be any better (not being over age 70 would be nice - except)

your up-grade-itis itch will need to find a different "scratch" -
no worry, the rabbit hole is endless-
ask me how I know

HTM12's as LCR , some attentive REQ, etc. total WIN

In my mancave, the HTM6's can make DSU, Neo:X and ATMOS seem less clear, less detailed

the visual for the 3 15" horns is also given to a recurrent / brief moments of "Daayuum! What the heck is THAT all about?"

I'm interested to hear responses to this thread, as I went through this exact dilemma not too long ago. I eventually settled on the HTM-12s and plan to order them soon.

Since I will be going from the built-in speakers in my television to the HTM-12s and a pair of B52-18s, I know my entire sound-world is going to be turned upside when it's all running. With that being said, I know I will be more than happy with the HTM-12s, that I won't be thinking "I should've gotten the 1099s." Not to mention, I save money with the HTM-12s and still have a 12" woofer. With the money I save getting the HTM-12s, I can spring for the pre-assembled XOs too!

I have similar interest OP. Difficult to find side by side comparisons of the DIYSG designs. I know I love my fusion 8's but i'd love to compare them to any of the others. The guys who go to the g2g's don't speak much about their take on the many speakers that show up at those. Wish they would. Would be very helpful. Perhaps the take away is there isn't much of a difference?

I'm also wondering the same.

In the past I've actually preferred the sound of two-ways to three-ways, but mostly when it comes to music. I'm into the inverted-bell curve style EQ for music.

Seems like the three way design is more capable of a flat response curve, but as we all know, flat isn't always the most pleasing EQ curve.
