Volt 10 Atmos Build: bought for the epic packaging, kept them for the sound!

Just a small Atmos upgrade ...

Ready to hang!

When using French cleats, go with compact banana plugs or just bare wire them, because I didn’t and the existing plugs hit the wall not allowing the speaker to sit totally flush. I’ll rewire them another day, but for now they work great. Might have helped if I had recessed the terminal cup some, but seemed like more work than it was worth.

So I did some brief A/B listening this morning with the SVS satellites versus the Volt 10’s for music, and I think I actually prefer the little satellites in stereo. I’m not a critical listener by any means, but the SVS stereo imaging and detail with music is excellent for such a little speaker. Perhaps some EQ would help, didn’t redo calibration so subtle differences in level go a long way.

The Volts definitely fill the room and engulf you in sound much more so than the satellites; to my ear this does two things for the Volts, decreases the stereo separation of instruments across the stage (which isn’t good for music), and their powerful sound presence results in a wall of speakers playing akin to a large concert versus the more narrow dispersion and imaging of the satellites that you can more easily identify and localize instruments across the sound stage (maybe a positive and negative depending on what you prefer).

Both these differences should lend themselves well to what will essentially be an overhead effects speaker for movies. Based my haphazard testing, I wouldn’t recommend them for only stereo listening, but they’re not designed or really intended for that purpose anyway.

If you're not running with Audyssey disabled or with different Audyssey presets for each pair (having run Audyssey on each set respectively) I would be very leery of comparing them in the manner you're using.

I wouldn't find your observations surprising. I have volt 8s for the rear and volt 6s going into the ceiling. I'm setting up a home theater and I would expect the rears and ceiling to be a bit less demanding for localization.

I agree, was more of a basic feel for how each responds with Audyssey off. That’s why it’s more less a haphazard test just for curiosity. Doing a full calibration when I’m done.

Volt 10 Atmos Build: bought for the epic packaging, kept them for the sound!

All done! Time to calibrate...

Much better totally flush with the wall, and increases the optimal angle a little more toward the seating.

Edit: After calibration with the Volts as Front Height and Rear Top for my back overheads, it sounds incredible. Ran through my Dolby Atmos demo disc again and boy is that ear candy. Everything sounds as perfect as I can imagine without in/on ceiling speakers; these do the job very well and without a hint of strain, suspension of clarity, or added muddiness at reference from the front stage that was present with the previous satellites.

Like most home audio, the Volt 10’s look tiny in that pic with no sense of scale, but they’re definitely present in the room. The wife didn’t even comment on them last night, so that’s a plus. Taking them down later today to bare wire them, as the bottom is angled a good inch off the wall with the banana plugs bearing all the weight, so that can’t be good for the terminal cups (fixed 4/11).

The Volt 10’s clock in a good +6dB more efficient than the outgoing speakers post calibration, and that’s almost exactly what the listed specifications state. Money well spent!
