The Magic Square Subwoofer Array

Inspired by this:

and unable to resist this:

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-d...y-bestbuy.html

and not having the skill, time, patience, or tools for a real DIY project, I came up with this:

For less than $600 and part of a weekend, in room response with eq from one channel of an iNuke 3000 DSP:

The key is to jump on the JBL drivers when they're on sale at Best Buy for $30. The sales appear to be random and short-lived, and won't last long since these drivers have become VERY popular.

As an alternative, Walmart usually has them for $43:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/CS1214-10...6-6de0c2a0f541

and Sonic has them for $50:

https://www.sonicelectronix.com/cat_...ubwoofers.html

Note that the CS1214 and CX1200 are the same except for the dustcaps.

3 Q Power HD12 triples:

Poly foam for stuffing, one pillow per speaker:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays...-Each/20450258

Foam weatherstrip tape for a gasket, one per speaker:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/FROST-KING-...72.m2749.l2649

#8 3/4" black pan head screws:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/100-Pack-8-...72.m2749.l2649

If, like me, you don't like soldering, female spade terminals:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/100-Pcs-6-3...72.m2749.l2649

6.3mm is perfect for the large terminal of the driver. 4.8mm fits the terminals on the cabinet; large for the small terminal of the driver, but snug enough that I don't expect to have a problem. IIRC, someone found the smaller ones at an auto parts store.

Speaker wire:

https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-...-1-spons&psc=1

Tools:
drill, screwdriver, wire cutter/crimper.

Prepare wire from driver to box terminals. Be consistent about polarity! I put the large spade on the striped wire, and plugged that side into the terminal on the right in the box. Every single time. I hope.

Stuff each compartment with a pillow (I added more after this) and mark pilot holes. I found red worked best. Black, not so good.

Connect speaker (note additional stuffing):

At this point, you realize that you forgot to put the foam tape gasket on the driver:

A nail is very helpful for finding the pilot hole through the foam and carpet:

Wire it up:

As neat as that looks, give yourself more wire between the boxes so you can move them around without disconnecting them.

WAF version:

camouflage:

Where it really ended up, which is actually pretty inconspicuous:

I have the side boxes facing out. Measurements show it makes no difference:

Total cost less than $600, no skill and minimal tools required, great results.

Michael

It also works with 16, 25, 36... etc.

I can't wait to see the first 144 sub array (12 x 12 12" subs). I'm counting on you guys.

Subs are like pizzas: you get way more good stuff with the big ones.

What is "it"?

I can't quite tell if this is some sort of April Fools joke or not. There are no outlandish claims, nor does it seem particularly out of character in terms of scale and scope of the DIY forum at AVS...

"It" refers to the magic square wiring; a way of getting a large number of speakers wired at a reasonable load for an amp.
No joke.

Nice. How 'bout a magic cube next 3x3x3? You would have to get creative with how the center one fires but I have faith!

Awsome, nice job

About your placement, with them firing to the sides: you may not notice any difference in FR, but you SHOULD notice a difference in TR ! Did you try them all firing into your back? Your couch is not a reclining one, is it? If not, you should be able to put them RIGHT up to the back of your couch, within a inch or so. It should be noticable better for TR

They're just to the side of my mlp, leaving enough room for the back end of a mini-boss. Tonight's project. Stay tuned.

Whats your DSP settings on the 3000dsp? Very good to 15hz. I think thats about where my 8 fall off but I have 4 in each corner 13' away from MLP.

Now throw in aquaman and piss everyone off while also having a huge smile on your face for the first 30 minutes, which will then turn into a groan of "will it ever stop?!?!?!".

Off topic but I sure agree. Aquaman had 8/10 sound & visuals and <5/10 story. I felt like it was the 90's again with silly one liners, stereotypical characters and cliche everywhere.

Is it possible (or worth it to you) to put the four you have into a 2x2 configuration?

Two of these magic square wired. Theoretically, some benefit.

Still off-topic, but I watched this one over the weekend. I enjoyed it. But jeez the dialog left a little to be desired and some of the costuming was funny. Who thought it was ok to put Nicole Kidman in a fish suit with a huge fin down her back? And Black Manta looked a little silly. I still enjoyed it.

That being said, wow. The bass was here, there, and everywhere on that one. I know I'll be watching it again soon

Back on topic; let us know how that mini-boss works out Michael.

Maybe this pic will show up.

EDIT: I give up. Both pics show up in my edit box, though neither shows up in the post.
Just imagine a box like mine, with two cutouts instead of three.

I replaced my old ButtKicker with a mini-BOSS:

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/19-de...y-theater.html

Still a work in progress, but I'm very happy with the results in both TR and FR.

Highly recommended for anyone in the market for either/both.

That didn't even last as long as Best Buy's sales.
