Hence this new build. Towers with htm-8’s on top of 12” mbm’s. This will be all one box, separate section sealed between the woofer and the htm. I got the idea when seeing all the builds lately where the baffles are being chopped up and used as needed. So I’ll be cutting off the roundovers and using the baffles I now have. Upper section will be ported as designed, and the lower will be ported via slot port 2” tall, 13” wide, and 24” long. Netting a 28hz tune. Should be fantastic for 2 channel music. Much more to come.
Overall dimensions are 16x15x42
Sub'd for this one, looking forward to it!

Recommendation after doing a good amount of work with tbe MBM12s in a full range design, with that lower tune and the total output capability of them limited by excursion, to get the most out of your HTM8, consider going with two 12s. The 12 solo is going to run out gas long before the HTM, however having said that if your happy with less than max spl, just put a limiter on your 12 at max excursion (300-400w IIRL) to protect it and level match the HTM. I also agree that crossing the 12 higher at 120-150Hz or so and sealing or raising the tune of the HTM might be a bit more efficient, using the best of all deivers in their wheelhouse.

In any case i really like the design and plan man!!! Ill be following!

Yeah I’m no speaker designer! I was gonna try and keep this build simple. I had 1099’s that I played 2 channel ontop of the mbm12’s before, and I thought that sounded good. Even with movie content. Those 12’s were getting an inuke 3000dsp bridged. So close to 1000 watts each woofer. Highpassed accordingly. With this speaker, it’s in one cab, but I’m treating it as htm-8 with a sub. So audyssey will see it as htm-8 mains and mbm-12’s as the lfe output. I’ll definitely play with crossover and raise it, measure results and so on. We’re not going for max spl here, but if bottom end is lacking, I also picked up 4 more of the limited availability 15’s, so I’ll use one or two!
Thanks for your interest in my project and your advice.

Hey no worries. Youre project is gonna kick some tail. I spent waaaaaay too many hours tweaking and learning from my full range build so I can lend a hand if needed. You’ve certainly helped me with some great ideas.

I was thinking and you know, if you put the 12s in the same cab as the 8s and of course sealed the HTM secrion from the MBM, you can run the AVR as small crossed at 70-80hz (whichever looks flatter in room) and then let it send the sub 80 content to the MBMs below 80 to the LFE. Youre not directional below 80 or even better 70 so I think for simplicity, youd have a hell of an LCR doing it that way. Even music will sound pretty awesome.

You gave me an idea for fulk range floor standing surrounds. My side and back needs to be sonewhat narrow and moreso shallow for my room and I really wanted a full range side and back so Im not sending any surround to the LFE, soooo Im thinking of designing a tower that takes the HTM-8 and adds additional 8s (maybe 2-3) like a UM-8 (or something less expensive) ported to a 42 Hz tune (same as my LCR).

Cant wait to see how it goes. Regardless if what you do it will be awesome!!

I think this is what I’m planning. Separate box area for the htm and mbm, mbm signal from lfe output, htm’s as mains.
I’ll be sure to keep this thread updated to keep hearing everyone’s ideas.

Are you going to do a center at all since the setup you sold was a LCR build?

I don't recall a center in your 893/MBM build, but my "remembery" isn't what it used to be.

Regardless, is this build done yet?? You don't usually pussyfoot around on these!

Beautiful work, sir! I'd like to ask about the veneer:

What species did you use?

Paper backed? If so, did you use the old school contact cement method?

Thanks,

Dave

Yes. Band-it paperbacked Walnut. Contact cement for me. It’s easy. Though toxic.

And highly flammable (unless you go with the water-based, which I don't care for). Best used outdoors, definitely away from ignition sources!

I carved out an hour to play. I call this my ‘proof of concept’ mock-up. These are gonna be sweet. The baffle will be flush when done and the whole front veneered. I’m excited about this project.

Where did you get your MDF from? It doesn't seem like you're cutting it yourself, but it doesn't look like it was shipped to you either.

I think I would plug the round ports and try to make those 2 slots work as ports???

My plan is to run the baffles through a table saw and take off the roundovers. So the tower baffles will be 4 pieces of wood all glued up into one. My bottom panel, the htm baffle, and I have two mdf strips for the sides of the htm baffle. I plan on keeping the round ports.

For those of you who don't know, American football was created in Canton, Ohio where the Pro Football Hall Of Fame is located. Go Buckeyes!
