Oh man! I'm excited for you Sekosche! What a great setup. Looking forward to hearing more about your experiences with your simplified and more powerful BOSS 2.0

If you're still getting good jiggle when the platform is fully loaded, I wouldn't worry about the Crowson isolators based on your feedback about them not being loaded very much or even loaded at all.

Enjoy the fruits of your labor! Looks great!

BOSS Build with 3 JBL 12” drivers

Wow! BOSS 2.0 is bananas, stood on the platform for Bass I love you and it was hilarious...and this is running them at half the power from the old setup. Looks like a rat’s nest of wiring, might add some cable staples/clips to clean it up. Time to plop the couch down and calibrate!

I think I’m going to build a small shelf to elevate the VNF subs maybe 6” to chest level and move the platform back a little.

WOW ...that is a really nice looking platform and setup you got there!! Love the colors on it too and bevel!! Awesome job man!! And as good as it looks when showing it off with couch pulled away (it'll mainly be hidden with couch in place and blends in so well at the base), I bet it will feel even better!!

So excited for you and cant wait to hear what you think of it once you got everything calibrated etc!! I'm betting the TR with that setup will feel like it could rip you apart when unleashed!!

Yeah, that look awsome man! You are really among the BIG DOGS in here now, with MA’s, BOSS and NF’s.

But it seems to be room for that shelf in there, which would upgrade you from a NF setup to a VNF one I can almost garantuee you would notice that difference, and i think @SBuger would agree with me. Best of all, if you already have the materials for it, that is a FREE upgrade

Haha thanks, I might not be able to fit as many big subs in my room, but I think it turned out awesome!

Here’s BOSS 2.0, but I don’t have any comparison data for the previous build. The 10-15Hz is definitely much stronger which is awesome. Haven’t really tweaked anything yet.

Godzilla (1998) UHD with BEQ was awesome, and boy was it loud per the -4.5mv adjustment recommendation, excellent updated Atmos soundtrack! Hellboy II UHD is on deck to give the BOSS a workout. Watching HTTYD 3 again this time on disc tonight with the family, might crank the BOSS and MA’s more with DEQ for lower volume listening.

This is awesome! First I've seen of the BOSS. I've been running dual opposed CS1214s and just love the driver for it's versatility and value. I am definitely building one of these once the house/theater is built. Great job all and thanks for posting all the information.

Wow.....a reference spin of Godzilla nonetheless....even better! A dash of DEQ would be perfect for a family viewing of HTTYD 3!

Your BOSS 2.0 platform looks awesome....really like the roundovers, curves and stain....nicely done. Bet you can still smell that freshly stained wood....love that smell!

Well then you’re well versed in their value. I think I heard talk of the BOSS around the end of last year or maybe beginning of this year and didn’t think it was something I could do without building a full riser like in a dedicated theater room. But after seeing a couple regular posters sing it’s praises I finally stumbled over to @trhought ‘s Hideaway Theater to see what it was all about...and the rest is history! I’m a full fledged BOSSaholic now.

I see a VNF shelf is in my future!

Having the seating 4-6” up further now and with the cabs still on the ground definitely had a negative impact on their nearfield TR and chest slam. I rarely ever recline and usually just put the feet up so the seat back is still only about 6” from the top of the subs like this:

The cabs are 20” high so thinking a little 6-8” flat shelf would be easiest to raise them since I don’t have a lot of room to angle them without hitting the back wall, but I do like the angled look for optimal VNF placement. No point in trying to clear the BOSS magnets and get them totally flush with the seats, since I have to leave some room for them to recline. I’ll look at my options and bust out the table saw for some precision cuts next week when I have time.

Finishing up Hellboy II UHD with BEQ now and the BOSS is really dishing out the goods!

^^ Sure, you need to do some measuring to see where you end up, maybe make a cardboard template of the side profile of your NF cabs to better visualize it

And if you, compared to just lifting your NF cabs(blue drawing), you keep the upper rear corners of you NF cabs where they are and then just tilt the cab out on the bottom(red drawing) you could get the NF drivers closer to your back AND clear the BOSS driver magnets at the same time, while being able fully recline. And still be the same distance from the back wall.

And maybe the shelf could be more likea cradle(green drawing).

Ideas, ideas

For those who can't give up your VNF's even with a BOSS You know who you are This is what I would use for integration of VNF's onto a BOSS platform with a recliner.....a simple 4 bar linkage.

Just guesstimating some of the angles and travel distances from Sekosche's pictures above....this 4-bar mechanism is for 11" of x-axis travel and matches the chair back angles as close as I could tell from the reclined and upright positions in the pictures.

The VNF's would be mounted to the red linkage.

For the ultimate in stealthy VNF integration, the BOSS Back is another option if your furniture chair backs will accommodate a direct mount BOSS platform. I think the direct mount application would arguably deliver the best VNF experience and chest slam you seek

My BOSS platforms deliver plenty of that "coughing feeling" in the chest slam but this is AVS!

That seems slightly harder to build than a a flat shelf, lol. I’m not an engineer man! Maybe an angled shelf at most to test my sub maneuvering abilities.

This is more what I had in mind, an X type shelf/stand to cradle them...could work and with minimal support needed as they’ll just lean back on their own so the weight should keep them from walking forward like they do now on occasion. I was thinking of just leaning them against the wall with a wedge to angle them, but don’t really want the cab touching with all those vibrations and the projector mounted right above them. The wheels are turning!

Something like this gorgeous cherry amp stand would work too, but a much simpler design:

Gottcha! Just throwing some ideas out there. It would only take one drawer slider and 2 hinges from the local hardware store along with some shelving lumber and your 4 bar mechanism would be complete. But totally understand the hesitancy to take on a project such as this....not for the feint of heart. It would probably take some fine tuning once it's built also to get the angles and clearances exactly right. I love little projects like this...keeps the brain sharp, but I'm probably in the very small minority when it comes to stuff like this.

As we're talking about levers and 4 bar mechanisms....another idea just hit me. Using some hinges and extra lumber, one could build a lever action mechanism that could double or triple the displacement of one Crowson also. Since those actuators are just pushing up on the furniture on the back side, it wouldn't be too hard to leverage them for increased displacement. Not sure if they would start to overheat because of the extra force but would be a rather simple experiment. I'm thinking of you @Nalleh since you have the temperature monitors on your MA's already.....I don't know, maybe you've already tried this idea.

BOSS Build with 3 JBL 12” drivers

VNF 8” riser, fits snug on both sides of the BOSS with an 87” inner dimension. Going to stain the visible parts.

Ready to rock!

VNF riser over the BOSS works great!

Did a super brief A/B test with and without the VNF’s, and the BOSS does surprisingly well to emulate VNF TR, but it hits lower in the body lumbar/butt/legs where the VNF really cover the shoulders/chest/back very well. I couldn’t build any higher without leaving room for the seats to recline, so this was the perfect height. Ideally, I can see how an angled box/riser would work better to get closer with minimal sacrifice for distance; but this was an easy build for the gains.

These two song shows off the differences well with/without the nearfield midbass slam, there’s even a few gunshots in the Future video that have solid mid/upper bass impact.

Awesome!! Nicely done on the VNF shelf!! I'm a huge fan of having a driver close to the upper back to really help with the chest punch feel I bet the combo of BOSS and the VNF feel great!!

Looks awsome! Did you do any VS measurement of the difference?

Thanks! I wish I could snug them all the way up as I rarely recline, but my wife and kids occasionally do, so that’s a no go there. I had to move the seating up another 2” from the photo for them to fully recline, but the chest slam is still much improved from the floor.

Not yet on VS, I really need to do a full recalibration as I haven’t in a while even after BOSS 2.0. With the VNF subs up off the ground, I finally get upper chest/shoulder TR for the first time which is cool! I’ll try and run some tomorrow morning on my day off. I need to get the white noise file and laptop out since I’m running calibration anyway, have just been using EOT.

I’ve got some time off soon with the house to myself for a few BOSS experiments and movie binge watching, going to play with the VNF placement, and maybe remove the second riser and MA’s and see which combinations I prefer. Will do some VS tests to try and quantity a difference, but real world content and how it feels is really what counts. I have a feeling I’ll prefer the TR in its current setup but who knows; I have barely got to see what BOSS 2.0 really has to offer or find its limits.

Woohoo for some bass, rest, and family recreation after a long stretch at work.
