Fire breathing sofa destroyer...

So over 10 months ago I finished my V.B.S.S. speaker builds and have been very impressed with how well they performed...

This is not a V.B.S.S. build but is definitely it's cousin...I wanted to put two more PA 460's behind the sofa but wanted it to look more like a sofa table instead of two individual speaker cabinets...so after going back and forth with @LTD02 a plan was born...then derailed as I was on night shift for 10 months...over the Memorial day holiday I decided it was time and the fire breathing sofa destroyer was started...

I decided to build it a little different in that I build the sides and center section and then glued on the oversized bottom. I then added the port boards and then glued on the oversized top...this allowed me to use a flush trim bit to make the top and bottom PERFECTLY flush...its almost to pretty to paint the joints look so good...I questioned the ports facing the sofa and in the end decided to make them come out the side...as you can see I painted the inside of the ports matte fire red and it looks awesome...the exterior will be a light medium grey...

The first two pics are the dry fitting...third pic is everything glued together with the top routed...the last picture shows a battery drill for scale...this thing is huge and is insanely heavy...final dimensions are 76" wide x 30" tall x 16" deep...I still have a couple days of work left before it will be done...it has been so hot I can only work in spurts...

Looking good! I look forward to seeing the project progress. Also, is this going to use the VBSS settings/tunings?

Yes...it is actually a V.B.S.S. dimensionally resized (and incorporated in to one box) to work behind the sofa...20Hz tune

Ohhhh. I would love to have four VBSS's. Someday I'll add another two to my garage.

Here she is wearing nothing but 2 coats of primer...will hit it with 220 to smooth it out a little and put the finish color coats on it...the color coats are about the same color as the primer...because it sits behind me I didn't really care about the color and a gallon was $9 on the clearance rack...loving the red ports...might paint flames coming out of the ports down the sides...

The photo makes it look white but it is really a light grey...

Here it is done and one of her in place...the sofa definitely shakes...the box is so large and heavy it was pretty tough getting it into the house...once we fired it up I had to turn the gain way down as it is a bit overwhelming...I also had to move it back about 6" to reduce the pain level a bit more...this was absolutely overkill...hopefully I will get to dial it in with REW in the next couple days and get everything integrated...

So if it’s not a VBSS spec’d sub, what’s its cf and port tune? And have any WinISD graphs?

It looks stellar!

I tried (unsuccessfully) to have my wife let me do the same for our sectional only I would have used either 4 18s, or all 16 of my CS1214 drivers lol...

It is the exact same CF as a V.B.S.S. with a 20Hz tune to match the other two I built...

The only thing that was done was to push and pull dimensions to fit the space...16" width and 30" height were my two critical dimensions that had to be kept (16" as to not protrude into the room to far so we can actually get to the front door and 30" was sofa height)...this meant that the length had to make up whatever airspace that was needed (to match the V.B.S.S. airspace) and the port length had to be redone to accommodate the new height (thanks to LTD02)...the two subs do not share airspace...they are two sealed individual enclosures in the same box...

If you had 4 of these sitting behind you it would be way to distracting not to mention a bit painful...I watched Baywatch last night and had to keep turning the gain down on the amp to try and find the sweet spot of sofa shake...the midbass hits you like a fist to the chest and it shakes the sofa so bad that it is really distracting from the movie...there is also a massive mismatch of high/mids/lows (mids were overpowering)...keep in mind this is without running a REW sweep yet and using the V.B.S.S. amp settings...I am sure once I get it eq'ed and get the delays set right that it will be better...I also now have to find and fix all the new rattles...everything behind me sounded like it was rattling...

The one thing I did notice was that I had the volume about -4db / -6db (Denon numbers) higher than I typically watch movies with...normally we are -16 to -18 and we were at -22 last night and did not want it any louder...

Exactly why nearfield seems like a waste to me anymore. Not knocking your build at all, just the "distraction" causes amps the be turned down. To me the same effect could be done with some 8s since essentially the 2 18s are going to get knocked down in volume/gain from distraction/distance. Awesome build but I'd rather use their full potential to pressurize the room in a different location, now you're limiting the output on 2 drivers that can produce more spl than you're letting them.

I found I really had to kill them around 40hz or the mid bass was overwhelming. It's a cool effect but like you noticed, distracting and they beat you up.

Lucky for me they fit on the back wall right under spidey...I slid them back there and will run some sweeps tomorrow with them in both places (behind sofa and on back wall)...since I only use them for watching movies for now I am just unplugging the cord and putting it under the sofa...the other option is to put feet on it and lay it over to make it a large coffee table in front of the sofa...at least there are options...

Was listening to them on the back wall and one of the subs is making a noise...sounds like paper rattling...so will need to call PE in the morning and see if they will replace it for me...

I think my "Fire breathing Sofa Destroyer" may be a bit low because my nuggets rattle along with floor warping, pant leg flapping and feeling the overall "sofa wave". But my chest does not knocked on, like at all. Or maybe it is the huge arse room with hard surfaces eating up sound waves? But the pressure should be felt right next to subs right? Even if you were outside?

I just installed a Denon MultEQ AVR and it sounds a great deal better, less distracting but waaay less sofa breathing. The novelty has not worn off yet, so I might play around with a few ideas.

Pressurizing a room is what gives you the chest thump. If you cant pressurize it then you wont get much. A 12x12x8 room with a 10" subwoofer wont be alot because it cant pressurize the room. That same room with 8 12s will have chest thump. That's how I've always viewed it, cuft of the room matters. If it's open to other rooms those all tie in too.

EDIT: I guess pure spl will also do it.

My next sub build will be called the Nugget Rattler.

I turn the sharpness on my TV all the way up, because that's how I like my picture... real sharp.

Sorry no measurements yet...after the sub I started in on two bathroom makeovers so have been a little busy...the speaker rattle I had I do believe was from a couple loose screws around the sub...my sofa is just about centered in the room and I have 2 VBSS in front and the big boy in the back...when playing "Bass I Love You" the sofa feels like you are on a roller coaster...I really want to get in there soon and do measurements because overall I don't feel like it boosted the "feel" as much as I thought it would...everything else in the room that didn't rattle before definitely rattles now though so who knows...
