HS-24 mkIII build

I'm getting ready to build a cabinet for an HS-24 mkIII driver and am looking for input on the design. This will be a living room 2.1 setup. The plan is about 16.5 ft^3 net with two 8" ports about 48" long (one port on each side of the driver). This will go on the front wall under the TV. It will be powered by an NX6000 amp, and a pair of Klipsch KLF 30s will be beside it. I've posted some screenshots from Bass Box of the design.

Where is your first port resonance and where do you plan to crossover?

You can always turn it down, but you can only turn it up so much (before you run out of power, excursion or structural integrity).

I did some more tweaking to the model. This one is a bit better. I'm thinking I'll cross it over at around 80Hz.

This will be a fun a build. It seems like every couple of weeks you've got another subwoofer build going.

How many subs are you up?

There's eight 18s in the theater. Four UM full marties and four SP1804s nearfield. There's also four sealed SP1804s in the living room, but those have been sold to help build this, their replacement. That mini marty I did recently was for a friend. That paid for the living room subs. I build subs for a group I'm in to help fund a lot of my own equipment.

I did some more work with winisd and BassBox this morning. I think I'm getting close to a design I like. I tried to capture all the important information in the screenshot.

An inuke will "work" of course, but it probably needs more juice.

I would recommend a SpeakerPower 6k or PowerSoft K10 or FP14k.
If you plan on having more than 2 24's, then the XBS FP20k holds good value.

The only problems with the clone amps are:
a) no (honored) warranty
b) you have to get a working one via luck
c) infringement
If you can look past all that, they do give Crown iTech 12k-like performance for <$1000, which is hard to ignore...

That said: the iTech and PowerSoft have PFC; the non-PLM gruppens, speakerpower, clones, inukes and cheaper crowns don't.
Low PF puts more stress on the upstream grid/breakers, but most/all residential services don't have to pay extra for low PF equipment (and thus: don't really care. )

If my memory is correct NotNyt showed that many of the clones draw bursts of like 1-200a (each), 120 times a second... where as the PFC amps draw a clean-ish 20-30a sinewave. (On that note: I'm surprised I haven't melted the transformers outside my house yet! Time to add more subwoofers! )

I agree BTH you need to add more subs. I thought you were going to get a container full of those 24's like you have. Then several more fp20000q ad you may be getting closer to your goal.

Started working on the cabinet Sunday afternoon. Tonight I should have the ports finished, then I can start on the bracing. I'm using vertical window bracing about 10" on center and one line of horizontal window bracing down the center.

Yeah, I'm hoping to have construction wrapped up this weekend. Communication seems to be very slow with SI right now. I have no idea when the driver will be ordered.

When exactly did you order your subs? The SI subs are awesome but the build time is a little longer that you may expect. Several of us were in the 3 to 4 month range. I hope you didn't order recently and are now hoping to have a quick turn around. Probably not going to happen.

I haven't ordered yet. I emailed them last week to see if they would be putting them on sale soon, or had any coupon codes I could apply. They said they would send a discounted invoice to my PayPal account. Soon as I get the invoice, I'll be ordering two. I can handle waiting on the build, it's this waiting for the invoice that is bothering me.

Just an update on the driver order. Everything has been worked out. They misspelled my email address a couple times when they were sending the invoice. Nick fixed it this morning and is building the subs now. Looking forward to hearing these monsters. Construction continues tonight. Still on schedule to have the cabinet finished this weekend.

Everything is cut and dry assembled. Tomorrow I'll cut all the holes in the braces. Looks like I'll have it all glued up Saturday and hopefully painted Sunday.
