This is tempting me to re-think some of the bracing on BMD, it would be a nice space savings. Bracing is about - 3 cuft on that beast and there is a lot of scrap material

Wow, that is a lot of space needed for bracing, but that’s a really complicated design too! I bet you could get away with 1” dowel rods in a lot of places instead of 2x4” pieces or use thinner MDF.

I maybe added another 0.25 cu ft with a few more panels but maybe not. The original Marty bracing I calculated using 1.5” thick braces only came to 0.26 cu ft total for bracing, and I’m using 0.75” thick MDF that’s between 1.5 and 2” wide, so this should get me right at 10 cu ft net for the cab or a little over

Running behind on getting insulation started due to house chores, and I go back to work tomorrow. If I don’t get it sealed up tonight, I’ll probably have to delay it until next week. Should put finishing it on track for right before I leave on vacation for a while, haha figures.

The window frames are huge space savers. I am doing a mock up since I have a lot of scrap MDF, I might get the depth down to 27 inches, we shall see

Trimming a cubic foot or two off the bracing would be an awesome way to get the dimensions down. This is the first time I’ve done window braces by hand, aside from the one I just cut a large circle in for the Marty cube. I think they turned out great for a novice, and they were easy to knock out with a jigsaw.

I made my first little oops and drilled a 1/2” pilot hole for the Speakon connector on the wrong side of the box not thinking about the orientation correctly, lol. Jammed a 1/2” dowel rod in there to seal it up, no I didn’t leave it hanging out like that; it’s just for picture fun to remember silly mistakes. Glad I didn’t bore out the larger 15/16” hole yet before I realized what I did.

It looks like a 28.1 liter gain of volume going with the window bracing and $10 to $15 less of material that needs to be purchased since there is a lot of scrap material. This is also a great excuse to use the jig saw more, which I do enjoy on MDF, cuts like butter

Mistakes happen when drilling, there were at least 5 mistakes holes on Stormbreaker.

Any ROI for covering every inch of bracing with insulation? I’ve typically done this with my previous cabs, but this is a lot more bracing to work around. I’d much rather throw in insulation in between like this along the walls and call it a day, as it’s 93 degrees here.

Clamped and brad nailed, just need to let it dry a bit before chiseling off the PL3 and then hopefully will sand and router the edges maybe this afternoon or early tomorrow and get a couple coats of Duratex on. Nearly done!

I have a couple of Lavoce SAN214.50 on order and I think I'm going to build 2 boxes similar to yours. I'm curious why you moved the woofer closer to the port. Is there a technical reason for this? I'm likely going to put mine in the center unless there is some caveat to woofer location.

As much as I wanted to skip filling the brad nail holes, I went back and filled all the visible ones skipping the back and bottom. Won’t be priming it for the first time, so hopefully a gallon of Duratex gets me a couple coats and seals the MDF ends well. Guess I can thin it down some if needed; seems most people have more left over than they originally estimate.

Since it’s for nearfield, I moved the driver lower to be directly behind me with it lying on its side. The driver in the middle would be fine as well and give you plenty of clearance depending on depth.

Good luck on your build! Drop back in if you have any questions. I wish I had room left for two...maybe the next house.

Wow, Duratex is awesome and easy to work with! First coat on and I don’t even think I used maybe 1/16th of a gallon. Dries super fast too. Used a 3/8” nap 9” roller and made very quick work of it. Going to sand and get a second coat on later tonight.

^^^ Nice, that sub is gonna be wicked parked right behind you with that driver firing into you!!! Even with your BOSS and MAs, I think its still gonna make a tremendous difference in feel and overall aggression to really complete your bass experience. I know it sure does with mine even with crazy amounts of TR from other components. Just adding in a sealed 18" in my case super close behind my MLP makes one heck of a difference (it's just not the same without it or even 6" farther away), especially above 40hz or so where the other TR components don't contribute much. Your 21 ought to be even better!!

I agree with you on the Duratex, awesome stuff huh!!! Looks fantastic, great job!!! Its been a while since Ive checked this thread and was curious where you were art on it. Your getting super close now!!!

Well, I wasn’t able to get the second coat on until this morning, so now the waiting game. Going back to work tomorrow for a long stretch before leaving for two weeks, so unfortunately it won’t be installed before then. I think the cab turned out pretty darn good!

This is the orientation it’ll be in when it’s behind me.

I was going to let Alita: Battle Angel be the first movie I spin up with it, but I think I’ll go pick it up now and give a final hoorah to my current nearfields. I’ll be turning the Marty cube back on after this install, so I’ll be gaining heaps of~20Hz output.

Thanks! I wish I just used Duratex on my Atmos speakers, because it sure would’ve saved a lot of time messing with their finish. I had just enough time today to mount the driver and Speakon or relax and watch a movie as a fair well to my nearfields, so I chose to crank up Alita with some BEQ and man this movie sure pounds! So much 20Hz bass that I need to redo my PJ mount with some soft isolators or something, because when I lowered the shelf a while back the image shakes a bit during powerful bass below 25Hz or so and is very annoying. And now adding more bass to the system it’ll definitely need some serious stability.

Sadly, I won’t be able to finish the sub and get it into place for a good three weeks, but it’ll be a fun/heavy project waiting for me when I get back.

That stinks the driver surround appears patched, so you going to wait the three weeks for the replacement before hooking it up?! Glad PE took care of it. I’d have a hard time waiting and would probably run it anyway.

I’m still in Florida on vacay, but can’t wait to finish mine up. After seeing your sweet single baffle ply build, I almost wish I went that route for this beast to shave some weight...maybe next time. Your 21” duo reminds me a lot of my current nearfields.

I’m still in Florida on vacay, but can’t wait to finish mine up. After seeing your sweet single baffle ply build, I almost wish I went that route for this beast to shave some weight...maybe next time. Your 21” duo reminds me a lot of my current nearfields.

Haha, my wife wouldn’t mind right now, but we spent most the day at the beach playing and enjoying some cold ones so we’re staying put tonight. This is my first time to the Atlantic side of FL, and I must say I like it. The sand is extra fine over here.

21" Slim Nearfield 7.8cu ft Build with LaVoce SAN214.50

The last thing before installation tomorrow is I decided to add some heavy duty feet I had lying around. Screwed in some metal thread inserts with gorilla glue onto a chunk of ply and bolted them in. Hopefully they hold up well over time. I was worried I drilled the pilot holes a little too big at 3/8” but 1/4” seemed too tight on a test fit, surely the gorilla glue will help fill any gaps. Should help keep it from walking around.

Almost done!

I swear I am tomorrow! The suspense is killing me. Not looking forward to doing it solo in 90 degree heat. . Kids go back to school, yaaaaay!

I had it sitting in the garage for weeks sandwiched between a long stretch of work and vacation, so I’m ready to rock! Also, I grabbed a Darbee for my PJ, so it’ll be a fun week for A/V.
