The nearfield coffin is done!
Now just have to put everything back and calibration. Got my lower back and leg workout for the day.

Close enough?

21" Slim Nearfield 7.8cu ft Build with LaVoce SAN214.50

First impressions of the nearfield monster...it’s pretty nifty and slaps me with the bass.

Kidding. It’s amazing! But I’ve barely had time to play with it so don’t have a lot of feedback yet. Got it all set up and calibrated but only had 30 minutes to tweak and play some demos before picking the kids up from school.

From very brief impressions, I’m amazed how clean it sounds. The bass it produces, although directly behind me, still doesn’t overpower the other subs and isn’t even localized at a 100Hz crossover. I found this surprising given my last two nearfields were a bit noticeable when ran at the same levels. The sub itself is now sitting up a few inches higher too than the last which puts it right square in my back.

The sub simply blends in with the room, which is generally the goal, but not something I was expecting with a much more powerful driver being so close to it. I always thought I preferred a little thicker sounding sub but maybe not. It’s a little hard to compare a single nearfield driver that’s quite a bit different than the rest of my subs, but I’ll try my best this week to see what characteristics really stand out. I also have the Marty cube in the corner that’s only 3’ from the MLP turned on again, so that’s another variable making a direct comparison to my previous nearfield setup more difficult.

Another huge improvement this calibration is with my other TR devices. I finally set an effective negative delay on the BOSS and Crowsons syncing them beautifully, and holy cow, I think I was a bit off for a while after the last BOSS build and never fully realized the additional 3 drivers until now, because the entire couch wobble/slam is also greatly improved.

Getting the Darbee in the mail tomorrow so will have to play with it a bit, and I need to rerun Audyssey and break out REW, because I forgot to take some small PEQ’s off in the iNuke software before calibration, so I’m sure it set it back to semi-flat or worse.

If this is what these higher excursion pro audio drivers are all about, I’m already a fan. Obviously, I love loads of TR, but not bloated bass, and this driver seems to check all the right boxes. The lower distortion, decreased ringing, and whatever other engineering wizardry applied here really seems to be a winning combo. Curious what the waterfall graph will look like, might have to run a few compression sweeps for kicks.

Or now the BOSS has met its match. The latest calibration has the BOSS riser hitting like a truck to the point my skin was actually getting a little warm from all the vibrations during a few bass song demos.

With the couch flipped over, I stood about a foot in front of the 21” driver and the hair on my arms was dancing to the beat. I think I’m probably good on bass until we move next year, but I am possibly, maybe considering swapping drivers in the Marty cube. PSA is also offering upgrades on all their field subs to Neo drivers soon, so I’m curious how much it’d cost to swap both my V1801’s out with a B&C and reprogram the DSP.

Thanks. I’ll be swapping out the three full size Marty cabinets currently in the front of of my theater ( 2 horizontally under screen and 1 in the corner vertically) with three Devastators. I’ll be using the same LaVoce driver you used in your build.

Currently have a sealed 21 nearfield / behind the mlp, but I may end up building a 4th Dev cab to use there instead. We've got alot going on right now and free time is somewhat limited, but I've always preferred even over odd numbers, so we'll see : )

I'm in the middle of two 21 Full Marty's. Should be up and running in a week or so. I bought 4 boxes with the plan to sell two but now greed has set in and I'm thinking I need to horde those for the future upgrade. Looking forward to my first listen.

Spent most of yesterday dialing everything in and then wound up with no time to even listen before heading to a rock concert last night. This is why I don’t like getting REW out, sometimes ignorance is bliss when it’s just a few decibels off here and there. My response needed quite a bit of work integrating everything again.

After finally getting the new nearfield sub and everything else beautifully calibrated and adding the Darbee in the signal chain, the first bass movie with BEQ I’m watching today is...Pokémon, lol. It’s actually pretty awesome to watch with my oldest kid and the visuals are pretty sweet. This little DVP unit is awesome at enhancing the image, and especially makes all the hair and fur pop with the added contrast, which really makes all these colorful and fluffy Pokémon stand out. For anyone still rocking 1080p PJ’s, the Darbee is a pretty awesome upgrade I should have added years ago.

It doesn’t seem the Darbee company has any plans for a 4K model, which is too bad, because this is by far the best image I’ve seen to date.

As for the new Coffin, it’s a subtle beast for sure. I love how it doesn’t call attention to itself. I know there’s some people that have tried both and still prefer large very high excursion drivers, but I’m extremely curious now how my whole system would sound with all pro Neo subs. As much as I want to, I can’t/shouldn’t upgrade anything else for a good while, priorities...

Today, I watched an episode of Another Life, Wu Assassins, and The Boys, and they all have stellar soundtracks for streaming with full bandwidth content.

More than anything, I’m really enjoying how well it’s all dialed in. The ULF content is just nuts with the MA’s, BOSS, and nearfield 21” beast. I moved both Crowsons under the MLP, and I actually had to turn down the TR a bit on the BOSS too. The addition of a proper negative delay seems to have really helped sync things up and greatly enhances the energy transmitted.

Will have to knock out some more movies on my next stretch off!

21" Slim Nearfield 7.8cu ft Build with LaVoce SAN214.50

For a shared space that isn’t huge, my wife is obviously very understanding/forgiving of my passion for this hobby. Actually making an extensive list of the following theater changes, I think I’m very happy/lucky.

Just in the the last 4-5 years here, I’ve had 6 PSA subs, 3 SVS subs, 2 MBM’s, built 4 DIY subs, 7 PSA speakers, 4 SVS speakers, 5 Klipsch speakers, built Volt 10’s for Atmos, added Crowson MA’s, tried Buttkickers, built a new entertainment center and sub riser, slapped together two BOSS platforms with 3 and 6 drivers, went through 2 PJ’s, 2 different screens, added Darbeevision, 2 miniDSP’s, a UMIK, upgraded receivers, added 4 amplifiers, a UHD player, a PS4, several Rokus, Chromecasts, and Firesticks, and the list goes on...I really think I can sit and enjoy the hobby now for a while.

At least until we move next year, and the tinkering starts all over again! That’s half the fun to me.

I agree with the subtle beast comment and it does not call attention to itself. It takes a little time to get used to the cleaner sound that these drivers produce. Throw in John Wick 2 and watch the tunnel scene when he switches the guns to the big dog gun it hits so hard, these drivers shine in the mid-upper bass.

I kept mine at 90hz as I had before. I will say these drivers make the overall sound mix sound cleaner/crisper. The treble sounds cleaner and my speakers sound louder. It did take me a few days to get used to the new sound because at 1st it sounded like something was missing.

I’ve been trying 110-120Hz lately, but I haven’t usually ran above 100Hz long term. I always found once you’re surrounded by bass, you can go quite a lot higher on the crossover without it being localized. And with enough system headroom, it still sounds crystal clear at high volumes anyway. I know this driver’s wheelhouse is really cut down for HT use, but I’m loving it so far.

Finally giving Endgame a proper viewing today, and so far it’s a powerhouse with BEQ!

That’s on my demo to do list today too, that shotgun scene carries so much weight I love it. JW3 drops on disc in a few weeks! Next week is Godzilla, some good bass flicks coming up.

The reason it sounds so different is because the response should have changed. Usually with a low frequency driver you have a flat response or even rising below 20hz where with a pro driver the midbass is still higher than the low bass even with room gain. The response usually slopes the other way.

The low bass is still there. It's an overall different sound. I find drivers with a higher BL rating to sound crisper compared to lower BL drivers. Lower BL drivers sound warmer to me, that warmer sound muddies up the sound some and it's not noticeable until you give them both a listen. My 15-year-old son watched the last hour of John Wick 3 and I ask him if he noticed a difference, as I have the twin 21's in front and the PSA 3600's in the back and he said they sound better/different. I ask him how and he said the following " with the other subs they would make a peak sound and then another sound but now that other sound is gone, the sound is a lot cleaner". He said it's hard to describe. I'm almost positive what he's trying to say is there is zero overhang on scenes/notes. Like I said it is a different sound and it takes a little time to get used to.
