What are the better / best speakers for On ceiling Atmos ?

My current gear is as follows :
Denon AVR X4400H , PSB Image 6T towers, 9C Centre , 2B Surrounds Panasonic PT-AU3000U Projector , 100" screen , Oppo UPD-203 Funk Audio 18.1 Subwoofer

I was thinking my next upgrade would be to go from 5.1 to 5.1.4 Atmos.

I don’t like changing my gear often , so want to do it once and do it right , so not have to worry about upgrading my height Atmos speakers again in the future.

Some questions for those that have had various speakers in the past :

What size woofer is best to go with ?
As I have read people using the tiny 3 inch ones to big 10 inch woofers ...

Ported or sealed box ? And why ?

What commercial and DIY speakers are the best for this use ?

What mounting contraptions do I need , to aim them properly in my setup ?

My room is 19 feet wide , 11 feet deep , 8 feet high

I have 2 sofas , side by side for seating along the long wall . Seating is about a foot from the back wall

MLP is about 9 feet from Center channel and about 12 feet from each tower .

Denon AVR X4400H , PSB Image 6T towers, 9C Centre , 2B Surrounds

Funk Audio 18.1 Subwoofer

DIYSG Volts: https://www.diysoundgroup.com/home-t...ries/volt.html

The 8 and 10" are well regarded as surround/Atmos speakers, very happy with our ported 6s for surround (5.2 setup in the family room). Some use the larger as front L/C/R.

Sealed vs. ported depends on low you want them to go.

Mounting: Folks have screwed them directly on ceiling into studs. Others have flush mounted them. I believe some have used them IB as well.

I understand Revel in-ceiling speakers are well liked too. Never heard them myself.

The best?
3299's
But we'll "except it" if you put 1899's in the ceiling instead...

being that close to the back wall may leave you settling for TF or FH's,

maybe you can get FH and TM's but that can vary with the AVR-iirc

of course if you rotate everything 90 degrees, only 11 feet wide could be conducive to hot spotting for surrounds,
but TF and TR placement would be spot on
if surrounds 75-80 degrees wrt mlp, good for the kings throne, everybody else- it depends

but the Volt 8's get my vote

I use 6's for my ATMOS, 8' ceiling and spaced at the corners of a 7' square

Sin you're asking in the DIY forum I'm pretty sure people will advice on Volts, just fit the biggest you can I had Volt 6 and like them for surrounds and atmos but right now I have JBL Control 328C with some custom boxes that I really prefer over the Volts, right now you can find some used like new on ebay for a very good price.

I had

Volt 6 lx
Rsl c34e
Jbl control 328c with custom boxes

And prefer the JBL over all of the other options, it's that the other ones are bad, they're good but for me and in my room the JBL are simply better, separation is better, wider dispersion, more robust Compression Driver, bigger crossover that make it look like a crossover from a floorstanding.

That's my opinion.

Thanks for the comparison. Did you have all three mounted flush in the ceiling? If so, would you mind giving your thoughts on the JBL vs the RSL regarding smaller angled vs. straight down bigger and better speaker?

It's too bad you didn't have the Volt 10's to compare to the JBL's as I think that's more of a fair fight. The dispersion characteristics look very similar, the biggest difference being the JBL's having a slight dip @ 5K, the Volts a dip around 2K.
