Surround and Atmos Speakers Inquiry - DIYSOUNDGROUP items only!!

Think time has come to update my surrounds along with addition of atmos if possible.

My current setup:
Room : 22 x 13 ft , have a slanted roof, so it started from 10ft at one end to 8ft on the screen side.

LCR = JBL 4722
Surround back: Bose 201
Surround sides: Def-tech bipole speakers
Subs: PA460's + 2 sealed subs (Updating to 2 lavoce 21s)

I spent a whole lot of time trying to find a thread to convince me make a decision but I keep circling from Volt 8 to HT to Volt 10s and what not.

Which should I go for surrounds and Atmos? what do you recommend based on your experience.

Options: Volt all versions, HT all versions or any other DIYSG sets ( been waiting for vortex price range !!!)

What’s your seating distance?

If it’s on the short side of the room, I’d think either the Volt 8 or 10 could potentially be overkill depending on listening levels. Might even get away with the Volt 6 if getting a ported box. I like my Volt 10’s for Atmos, but I haven’t really tried them for anything else. The V6 and 8 don’t dig deep enough for an 80-100Hz crossover in the sealed cabinets, but the V10 does if that matters. Having built the 10’s, I probably could have easily gotten away with the 6 or 8 for my purpose, because these things are beasts for Atmos; compared to my large PSA surrounds, the Volt 10’s definitely look like overkill for overheads...but this is AVS.

some .02 thoughts
my room isn't much wider, 14.5, usable depth about the same, 8' ceiling

question: 1 or 2 rows of seating?

how close for folks sitting at the end position - i.e. potential hot spotting?

budget range?

solid walls both sides?
any in-wall / in ceiling I.B. possibilities / access
Volt8's are reported as doing well i.b. and you get extra room.

going for 7.2.4?
can you keep good separation for the tops from the bass layer.

can you post a labeled room layout.

+1 on the Volt 10's. I have them as surrounds and they match up very well with my Cheap Thrills (15" woof +12" SEOS).

I think your seating distances may be a bit close for good integration with the HTM's.

Its only one row seating for now, with a two seater recliner leaving 2-3' from listening position to near by wall.

very close . . .

think of positioning 10 15 degrees ahead of that seating

positioning is critical for that distance

Volt 6's on full motion mounts gives movement options if watching solo

these are my 88 specials as surrounds, in that 14.5 wide
but the mount , monoprice #3411 , gives me placement / aiming options

the v6's are even more shallow so perhaps better seating coverage

food for thought

this looks like good reach and yet tucks away tight to the wall: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=15867

as the v6's weight much less than these did at 52+ #'s,
less expensive mounts with an extended reach might be considered

I have volt 10s for surround and volt 8's in the ceiling. They do an adequate job. I went with the volt 8's in the ceiling because they had slightly better off axis performance. Current theater is just an open basement with a drop ceiling so they are running IB up there and I don't have a problem with them. Just screwed them in to a sheet of 1/2 OSB and mounted the crossover right next to them. No they don't have quite the reach down low but most atmos content is about ambiance or very fast fly-overs. There isn't much bass in ambient noise and flyovers happen so fast I don't have time to notice the lack of bass before the sound is either in front of me where I have the bass capabilities or long gone behind me where I'm not focused on the sound. I'm sure at some point I'll upgrade to something bigger and better but for now I'm happy.

The volts are nice speakers and do have the dynamic range necessary for a theater system, however, when I first got them, I demoed them as mains briefly and they didn't have quite the presence I had hoped. I will probably upgrade to the HT or HTM series at some point for my surrounds. If you can manage that size, I would suggest those. The HTM-8 flat pack is only 1/2" deeper than the Volt 10 atmos.

I'm usually fairly budget-minded... so with a single listening position, I'd think Cobalt-8s could be a pretty good choice for surround duties. I'd also think Volt-8 or Volt-10 in IB would be the way to go for ATMOS, and since the ceiling slants down toward the screen wall, a flat ceiling mounting shouldn't be problematic either.

I prefer the look of sealed Volt 8s to ported Volt 6s, my $0.02.
