unless two different types of subs are being run on the subwoofer channel (such as low frequency and MBM units), a single low pass filter in the avr is best.
the original concept was to use sealed mains that have a natural second order rolloff at 80hz.
then electronically, the high pass on them was 2nd order, providing a 4th order high pass overall.
the sub then received a 4th order low pass to match the mains in both output and phase.
(the lfe channel was supposed to pass through with no filtering in order to provide flat response up to 120hz too).
most folks don't follow the plan, so everything is a bit "wild west".
but...if it works, then it works. :-)
