The only reason I’m thinking this way, is I can fit 4 of these stacked. I’m pretty much maxed on room. Doesn’t really give me room to tweak the designs.

You will like the Minis. My M18V1s with the 184.03s really pound cleanly, at least with the amp upgrade. The NSWs in Minis will be on a completely different level of insanity

From all the reading here on AVS, I and maybe others are curious to what you think you are going to improve on with redesigning to all Devs on an already stout setup. I get massive amounts of SPL is good and all but do you feel that normal movie watching is lacking in something? Just curious.

I know I did four matching Devs up front to boost my overhead but in hind sight I wish I would have matched four really low tuned Devs in four corners of my room and then also leave room for midbass monsters up front somewhere too.... next time.

I’m just in rabbit hole free fall.
Normal movie watching with my friends and family I am 100 % happy. Just war mode demos I miss having the extra oomph of the alphas and micros. But I sold a 20k amp and 4 devs. So I’m just looking to get some of that feeling back.

@Red Five , can the width of the BMD Shallow HCR be taken down to 28"? My room is 150.5" wide. The 99s are 12.5" wide, that would leave 26" for each of the 24s. Doable, but I'd like to make the 24s 28" wide.

It would look something like this. You might have to add a couple front to back braces toward the bottom of the rear chamber. That sim is using a 3rd order high pass filter, but a 2nd order high pass filter a little under tune will look about the same. The simulation is based on 1000 watts. The tune will be around 18.5Hz.

Thanks. Any issues with using traditional window bracing throughout the rear chamber?

It should be close enough in displacement to not throw the tune off much, it should stay under 19Hz.

Looks like I won’t be able to use the devs after all, tried getting it into the room and it won’t make the turn on the landing, figured the extra 6cm depth compared to my old subs wouldn’t make a difference, I was wrong. The devastators have defeated me!

Is the door frame the obstacle that is not allowing them to work?

Its the bannister at the top of the landing, they won't make the turn to slide them upstairs, tried lifting it over to no avail.

We managed to get it to bannister height, but there’s a wall opposite and then the hallway opening, so we couldn’t put it down without it resting and scratching the walls.

Sorry man, I had dreams that mine didn’t fit. I literally went and measured door openings, etc in the middle of the night.

Go slow, and be safe moving it. We are all rooting for you to get it in place.

That’s the main issue I think. Probably moveable, it’s just the safety aspect of it, if something slipped at the top of the stairs it’s game over!

Did you yank the woofer out for moving it? Not a huge reduction in weight, but in an awkward situation like that, take anything you can get for making it easier to move!

Red Five - Just an FYI, I have confirmed with PE and Dayton that the PSS555-8 21" driver has 24mm one-way Xmech and 48mm peak to peak.

Like I said before, I am not building Devastators for mine, but since we were discussing Dev options using it I thought I would include it in this thread. I also updated the PSS555-8 thread with this info.

Cool!

Cool!

I saw that yesterday! If it runs out of steam and distorts around 17mm, that would be pretty cool...

Starting on the 2nd v5 12" Devastator. My first box was about a 1/4" off when I put the bottom on the last one. PL3x might have been part of it but I don't think the factory MDF cuts at HD/Lowes are square - you kinda take those things for grantite as an amateur. Bought a flush trim bit and will make the sides a little longer this time and see if this works out a little better this time.

I didn't put pillows in my first one. I'm guessing I should do that in this one right?

I also bought a Crown XLS2002 with the $50 off sale plus Amazon credit I had. I'm going to give it a go just running one devastator while waiting on glue to dry during the build and see if the output is similar to the Behringer before I buy a Cleanbox pro - my AVR is a Denon 3313CI at the moment. Are all AVR's LFE signal is too weak or does it just depend on the model?

If you add an 1/8 inch to both dimensions of the side panels it can make life easier, especially with a flush trim bit. The Devastator rear chamber is starting to get standing waves close to the pass band at 48" tall. A pillow on each side panel midway down is a good path to take. Probably not necessary for a lower crossover frequency, 80Hz or less. If you are getting hum, line noise or the sub is not hitting hard I would go with a Cleanbox. Having a strong signal going into the amp without cranking the sub trim level or maxing the amp input sensitivity is my preference.

Finally jumping into the Devastator ring. I'll be building a pair of shallow BMDs for the SAN214s. No modifications to the size of the cabinets. We're getting a lot of rain the next few days so I don't know if I will be able to finish them this weekend. Fingers crossed though. This will be the first step of a complete renovation to my theater.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll add pillows pillows for this one. Might pop open the hatch on the other and add to that one too. I'd prefer not to boost the gain up on the AVR/amp much either. I'll see how it compares on the Crown to the Behringer - I might end up having to go that route.

You're lying if you're saying you don't have FOMB (Fear of missing bass).
