Carpet for BOSS riser

hi,

I made a BOSS riser with the drivers flush mounted. I plan to carpet it today and was wondering if I need to cut holes in the carpet for the drivers. I asked in the BOSS thread also but no answer yet. thanks for answering.

I would think if you didn't have holes, the speaker would rattle against the bottom of the carpet. Even worse, the surrounds would rub against the bottom of the carpet, which is quite abrasive, and it would quickly destroy the surrounds on the speaker. I would definitely cut them out.

I mean, I want to say yes, but really the boss method is more shaking than anything else. You already have the carpet, plop it down on top, put the couch on 'er and give it a whirl.

One only need carpet the edges, and a bit of the top that might be exposed to view.

But not over the drivers. Unless you're (depending on orientation) trying to keep the motors warm, or tear up the surrounds.

Did you end up trying it before you cut out the holes for the drivers?

Slamming a rubber surround against the sharp, hard, carpet backing is probably not a good idea unless you want to replace drivers...often.

Basically, yes. BOSS (Baffle Open Sub Shaker) is a name just like the Marty sub, V.B.S.S., Cyclops, Johnny sub, etc. are all made up names for ported subwoofer designs.
