Any guess about new DIYSG speakers?

The DIY Sound Group site has a banner saying the following:

Coming Soon
- The Kuda
- The Sledge
- The Impact

Any guesses (or hints) what those could be?

The Sledge and Impact sound like good subwoofer names!

My teenager is a gamer and from what I understand the Kuda is a sub machine gun? So not sure about that one.

wasn't matt(?) working on a 3 way for 2 channel music focused use? it never came out that I knew of.

I've love a diy 3 way with a seos horn tweeter and highish sensitivity mid and bass woofer. Not many DIY horns for music other than back horn loaded single driver speakers

There are dozens of fully fleshed out Econowave and QSC based designs out there. You just need to search (and no, I'm not going to do it for you). There's also Pi speakers.

If you go active, it's not hard to get something going reasonably well in a couple of hours after the construction is complete. Here's a serving suggestion: JBL2226, 2118/2123, EWave flare and a 2408.

ooooo.... I'd dig on that. Or, at least, enjoy watching others enjoy that, being broke and cheap. ; )

Being broke and cheap, *I'd* love a resurgence of the DNA-150 tweeter and some scandalously cheap options... like a modernized Econowave with DNA-150 + B-stock SEOS 12 + cheap 12" Dayton / GRS woofer, or similar. Could even make it work by having PE do the heavy lifting stocking/selling/shipping the commodity parts and just selling the Denovo-exclusive bits and the XO at DIYSG. hint hint Or just sell the DNA-150 again, and encourage some DIY designs....

Anymore info on these? I’ve been contemplating GSG MBM’s with 21’s, I’m closer to you though however and could pick up!

Looking at the new diysg offerings...

I have 2 ultimax 18s still in the box been waiting to do something with.

I see they have the sledge m4-18s which is a 4ft3 baltic birch sealed box for the 18

Also a vbss -18 ported 6ft3 box

Not sure where these will go yet but prob gonna power them with a nx6000d

Thoughts on the "better" option?

Is the vbss design good for the ultimax 18?

I'm sure a UM18 would work in a VBSS cabinet, but the VBSS is made for the Dayton Audio PA460 driver.

True, but primarily because the PA460 is very cheap, hence the name "Value Buster Subwoofer System". If you have a driver that models well in a 6.5cuft (net) port box, then go for it.

I believe the DNA-150 was dropped by DIYSG precisely because the cost from the supplier went up.

The VBSS cabinet can be used with lots of other 18" woofers but he 18" Ultimax needs more than two 4" ports if you really crank it up. There's a chance the 18" RSS460 might do okay in that box because it has less X-max. But I'd probably wait a little while longer for different enclosures.

So for the ultimax 18 I should stick with the sealed sledge? Pairing them with 1099s

Or would you recommend something ported...not sure I want the size of a Marty

I know some people have used the 18" Ultimax in ported enclosures around 6cuft but I think the Ultimax does it's best in small sealed cabinets or fairly large ported cabinets. If you listen at higher volumes then you will have issues with the VBSS cabinet only using two 4" ports. Those two ports are okay with the 18" pro audio woofer that the cabinet was designed for because that particular woofer doesn't move as much air as the Ultimax.

The VBSS is perfect, been waiting to install my PE Buyout SP1804s (an amazing driver, now sold out) in a mid bass ported cab. Tuning will be appx 42Hz, so twin 4" ports should be good.

I got 2 of sledge 4 cu ft sealed in and started building with the ultimax 18"

I have everything but the outer baffle on.
.can't get the ultimax to fit. Hole is cut a bit undersized....ive sanded and nudged it in all night and I'm still off a bit. Other than that everything is pretty good. Gonna stain them a dark brown (Kona) with a semi gloss clear poly on top.

The woofer diameter is cut the same as all the MDF Ultimax boxes that PE sells. I was told that sometimes there might be some metal 'flash' around the Ultimax frame
or extra paint that makes the base just a little bigger. You might want to check that first.

If you need a baffle with a bigger cutout, let me know.

Used this stain..

First used varathane pre stain conditioner

Then a varathane semi gloss polyurethane...4 coats with sanding in between

I have one of the Kuda kits put together. Like all of Erich's kits it went together extremely quickly and easily. Right now it's just waiting on sanding before finishing. I have a gel stain + amber poly method that's worked well on BB before.

Some minor notes:
- I'm using an Infinity 1260w because I already have it, but the Dayton RSS315HF models well (exactly the same as the Infinity). An Ultimax in this cabinet could get a few more dB on the low end (with more watts) but would probably overwhelm the ports.
- Erich says it's tuned for 20hz. It comes with stock-length Precision Ports, i.e. a 12" connector for, according to PP, 18" effective length and a little over 22hz tune. WinISD seems to agree, but WinISD tends to be pessimistic on port length. That, of course, is before any cabinet stuffing. I've lined mine with denim insulation and will do a bead test once actually assembled. 2x3" ports model to 27m/s port velocity at power levels pushing the Infinity or RSS315HF to excursion limits, so I'm hoping the PP magic works. (The Ultimax model is hitting 40m/s which is way too much.)

E: See Erich's post 38 for better info on tuning / port velocity / Ultimax.

The Infinity looks a bit goofy but I put magnets in the baffle for a future grille.
