It’s going Down… Operation SledgeHammer—Tri DEVASTATOR BUILD & some other things…

Correction/Update::

As of 12/09/2019... Looks like this build will be stopping at 2 Devs for right now... the LFE and a Mini w/460HO. I took the second LaVoce 21" and retrofitted one of my Full Marty boxes.... so now I have an 18" Full Marty & a 21" Full Marty. They play really nicely with the Devs in my space. Since they are all tuned in the 17-20 Hz range, the integration was fairly straight forward.

In my experimentation, I have found the Devs to be a little too laid back from a tone perspective for the genres of music that I like.... but for movies, the Devs ROCK. They hit those low notes with ultra clean authority. I managed to find an AWESOME medium ground with the ported/Dev combo in my space.....

I would NOT hesitate to build the Devs again, they are great sounding boxes that will bring a smile to your face every time you fire them up.....

As of 11/24/2019.... I will be building 3 Devastators and not 4 as per the original plan..... They will consist of 2 LFE and 1 Mini due to unforeseen circumstances that require that extra space..... all else is the same.....

@Red Five

First off:
I would like to thank the main dudes responsible for this build LTD02 & Red Five.
LTD02 created the initial design and Red Five took it and RAN with it….. Thank you both for your support to our community…. LTD02 & Red Five have been a GREAT help to me on my bass journey….

On to the business at hand:

Currently I have 2 Full Martys with the RSS460HO which are AWESOME in their own right in my space.
The room dimensions are 17 x 22 x 8 with old school plaster walls and suspended floor….

I’m just looking to take my system up to the next level in WOW factor…. Not that I NEED more output…. I would just like it to be more “in your face”, mid bass that feels like body shots.. etc. If you are here, you KNOW what I’m talking about….

So, I will be building 2-- Devastator LFE, 2-- Devastator MINI, a BOSS platform, a VBSS for the center channel & new rear surrounds. The LFE will have the Lavoce 21”, the MINI will get the RSS460HO & the BOSS gets 4 JBL 12”.

The new SEOS surrounds will have the same mid-bass drivers as my mains and be 2way (mid-bass drivers are in series). My mains are 3way and consist of a mid/high top and a VBSS 31Hz for bass section. The center channel will end up being a 3way (to match the mains) with the same drivers as the mains as well + a VBSS on the bottom.

So far I have managed to build only 1 surround from the wood I had on hand at the moment…. So here is a sneak preview….

I’m picking up the wood for this major undertaking on Friday….. wish me luck….

P.S That is an older pic of my mains before I changed 1 of the mids..... same design though....

Can't wait to see the results on the LFE version. I don't think I've seen any built yet, but plan on doing 4 myself next year.

I'm intrigued by those mains. Looking forward to the build!

Juju, have you looked at the new Mini for the 21s? This is the RSS460 vs the 214.50. This also begs the question do I design an LFE Mini? The 460HO would most likely enjoy added rear chamber volume.... box would be 40x25.5x42, basically 8" chopped off the top of the LFE.

This is what the mains look like now…..

CD: B&C DE360 1" Polymer Horn Driver 8 Ohm 2-Bolt [EXCELLENT DRIVER]

Horn: RCF H100 90 x 75

Upper mid-bass driver: FaitalPRO 6FE200 6" Professional Midrange Speaker 4 Ohm [CRYSTAL CLEAR & CLEAN]

Lower mid-bass driver: Peerless 835004 SDS 6-1/2" Woofer 4 Ohm [NO LONGER AVAILABLE]

Bass Section: 31Hz VBSS

Crossover: Dayton Audio XO3W-375/3K 3-Way Speaker Crossover 375/3,000 Hz

The mid/high box is 1 Cu Ft sealed

This set of drivers sound GREAT together….. one of my best builds….. hits reference, no problem.
I changed out one of the mid-bass to get better vocal clarity and now I have it in spades…..
And depending on the mix.... they can "disappear" in the room like a mini monitor....:D

Will the SEOS's be mounted sideways?

My only recommendation would be to replace the Dayton XO with custom, as I highly doubt it has optimized inductance and FR as-is for the previous or new drivers.

Other than that, it looks like a fun project.

No.... the SEOS will not be sideways.... the 2nd pic is correct top to bottom.... the other pic came out sideways....

I agree with you on the XO..... looking to go active after this build is done... I have a few old school Crown Macrotech 2400 sitting around doing nothing

They're also great looking. Nice work.

Do you have specs for the crossover?

So you're using 4 LaVoce 21s then?

I think you NEED LaVoce 21s. And they need you. Please save them from the cardboard box they are currently in... they miss you :(

Nah.... ONLY 2- 21" in LFE Devs and RSS460HOs going in Minis.... I really like the curves of the LFE response.... should be wicked in my apartment....:D:D:D Only the reg size Minis will fit in the designated spots.....

UPDATE:
Everything is cut for 1 LFE except the rear panels... Going to start the glue-up after dinner tonight, should be completed by tomorrow night..... soon we go BOOM!!!

Hopefully I'll get them all done by next weekend being off work and all next week....

Yes I did BUILD a table saw that works very well I might add. I used it to rip the front to back 2x4 in half.

Setbacks: In measuring the wood once I got it home, They blew one of the cuts by ONE INCH so I had to rework my cut sheets with wood that was already cut..... that was just a PITA. Oh and their panel saw is NOT SQUARE!!! It was off by 3/16 over 4 feet......Alas, we move on....

UPDATE:

So we are now at the sanding and priming stage for the internals.....

TRIGGER WARNING::
If you build the LFE, the BASS will come..... but just be warned that this thing is cartoon-ishly large. When you do the mock up, all you can do is laugh.... and say wow...... That pic doesn't really give the scale..... that is a 45Lb Kettlebell on top.... not a small object....

As for the build.... It's not difficult at all.... IF you can do IKEA stuff, then you can do this....
Compared to a Marty build, this is not harder... it just takes more time..... I could have built 3 Martys by now...lol..

I'm looking to make it go BOOM tomorrow night..... Onward....

LOL.... now we wait.....drying paint..... I just used some BEHR Ultra from HD.... that color is Carbon in eggshell.... now all my subs match.

BTW.... there is no way I can keep the Martys and these.... well they served me well....

They have such a smooth signature. Best to keep them all Devastators if it is a viable option.

Oh they will be.... I was just commenting on the size of the LFE.... I couldn't keep them both if I wanted to...

How did you get that big beast of a woofer in the box.... did you lay it on it's face and let gravity be your friend?

I might not count with tiny, insignificant 18’s, but installing them with the cabinet face-down was super easy.

Yup that’s exactly how it’s done! To make alignment easy I did make some pencil marks to ensure the woofer was centered. Outside of that I held it by the magnet and gently lowered it into place.
