I would YouTube some how-to guitar finishes. I believe it is called a sunburst maybe? I wonder if you maybe need to use an air brush?

It's a sunburst (blueburst, technically) and yeah, it would be much easier if you're spraying. I would recommend doing a couple practice pieces before attempting your final product. Or seeing if a local music craftsman will do it for a reasonable price.

Parts 2 and 3 will be my path. Looks simple. Splated maple probably as well!

Progress. Just need to glue the front on then finish them in the veneer.

Testing tonight. Got them home and hooked up just streaming music and wowza....these things are good! I NEVER thought I'd "wonder where the subwoofer is" but the low end is very impressive! Now I just want to build more lol

I wanted these to do better than my Boston cr8s, I was worried they wouldn't. I've flipped back and forth a few times and the detail is just amazing

I'm in heaven. I feel like I've had a blindfold on. How in the HELL do these have this much bass?! I moved them into my theater and am just pounding them in stereo mode. I've never heard a bookshelf speaker do this! My m490s are close but there's not much definition.

Classix ii, Boston cr8 (7"), mirage m290 (6.5"), mirage m490 (8").

This is why I like Carmody's designs...he definitely puts an emphasis on bass, which I appreciate. I hate bookshelf speakers that require the use of a subwoofer. That was one of the things that drove me to DIY (and the end result is far better than anything you can buy premade for the same price).

I'm doing something a bit different with the finish on my ClassixII's so my build got a bit sidetracked. Hopefully by the weekend I'll have them wrapped up.

The Bass is lost in very large rooms, but the overall sound is still very nice. I took them over to my sisters/brother in laws to show what DIY can do but the room was like....7000cubic feet all said and done. My room liked midbass, their room liked bass bass so it was still awesome to crank some stuff.

Ill start the final finish of them soon.

Got a bottom veneer on and practiced my finish. I'm liking both ways. Can't decide if I want to do a black front or just finish oil.

No need to create a new thread for these since I've been piggybacking off of this one (plus it's the most recent one in here for this speaker).

Anyhow, finally got mine finished up. I've just been running them for break-in, but so far my experience is very positive with them. They kind of remind my of my Elac Debut B6's, only with a better tweeter and imaging. Still smooth on the top end and decently warm, but just better mostly all around. They sound a lot bigger than they look and they seem to play really nice with my vintage receiver.

Anyhow, I wanted to give them a somewhat "retro" finish to match said late 70's Marantz receiver so I went with a metallic dark gray front and a mahogany/cherry stain on the maple veneer. I think it turned out pretty good. I could stick a Marantz or Wharfedale badge on them and honestly, most folks would be none the wiser.

First pic is the raw maple/primed front, second is the stain and painted front and third is everything together in their place. Big bonus that I was able to match the furniture around it...wife loved that.

Some more thoughts on the Classix II after I've had a chance to listen to them.

- bass is really nice and full. Some of the best bass out of a 6.5" bookshelf that I've heard. Doesn't seem to be quite as much BSC as some of Carmody's other designs, but it's there if you want it.

- detail is good, but not great. If you listen to a lot of jazz, this may not be the speaker for you. Even a speaker like the Overnight Sensation MTM does better in this category (the O/S MTM punches way above its weight though). When they say that the Classix II does well with poor recordings, I see what they mean. That's not a bad thing, but it's something to keep in mind before you choose to build it. If you want to hear every pluck of a string, every brush on a snare, etc...there are probably better choices out there. What is front and center on some speakers falls back a bit on the Classix II.

- one of the best moderately priced "den/mancave" bookshelf speakers to build, period. This is a fun speaker and will have people up and moving in no time. My kids absolutely love it with their songs on Spotify. It's just a blast to crank up.

- soundstage is very good. Decent width and ok height and depth. Again, the O/S MTM probably equals it or slightly bests it in this category, but that's still an impressive feat for the price.

- great warmth, highs are just about right. Good stylistic blend.

Overall, this speaker somewhat reminds me of my Elac Debut B6's, only with a better soundstage and better/clearer top-end. That's pretty high praise and I'm glad that I ended up building them.

I agree. I love them. I have been using one for a Center channel in my theater just to test. It does well there I think. Considering building a 3rd for LCR, but still testing how I like it.

On some songs I really like them and on others not so much. It's the flattening of the detail that somewhat bothers me as all music sounds good, but with my "audiophile" tracks they tend to lose a bit of what makes the music special (mostly, I blame the woofer's midrange detail as the tweeter is pretty nice). They may get relegated to my basement area where I play more Spotify than anything else.

I know I'm being overly critical because don't get me wrong...these are really, really good sounding speakers (and you cannot touch the sound quality in a retail speaker for what I have in these). At least I'll have an excuse to look for another DIY build now
