Finally ordered classix II's

Been contemplating this for a year or so and finally said ok, its going to be a winter project. Ordered the baffle only kits from PE and 2 crossover boards off ebay.

My plan is to build some front ported versions. Does the kit come with dimensions? Is the port length the same as the regular cabinet? (I assume so).

Excited to hear them, they will be my living room TV speakers and music, I mainly listen to music more than TV since I dont have cable or internet and I watch movies in my "theater". They will be replacing boston CR8's which will make their way down to the theater for L/R to match my franken-center.

Ill be updating with pictures on here as well. Not sure if I will be doing curved or just square, my dad and I will be working on the cabinets.

I hate cable and internet providers with a passion. I am around 2-3 years now without them and dont miss them.

Have you built the classix II's?

Here's a link to Paul Carmody's Classic II page - https://sites.google.com/site/undefinition/classix-ii

He has dimensions for rear and front ported versions. He says "The two cabinets will perform identically". Slightly different dimensions from the PE cabinet but all probably the same internal volume.

He lists the same port size as PE (1.5" x 4") which "tunes the cabinet to 40Hz for an internal volume of around 15 Liters" (0.53 cu ft.)

Good luck

My dad got the panels all cut. Took about an hour to cut and fine tune everything. Home depot had 2 half sheets of 3/4 mdf left, both damaged. Walked out with both for $12...score.

My plan for the front baffle was add a piece to the bottom. Should be fine.

Following those specs.

Looking for veneers and cant seem to find anything I really like. Walnut or bamboo maybe.

Anyone know of anything different out there?

There are loads of online suppliers for veneer. One for example: https://www.veneersupplies.com/

A quick Google will turn up many more.

Thanks, needed more selection than Parts express had.

Really thinking about a super glossy blue dyed veneer for the sides and top, than just black front and back. Maybe piano black on the front. Could look good I think.

I'm considering doing slot ports,

Port in kit is 1.75x4.25 to get exact.

The slot port would need to be .5x7x5? Or to use 1:8 .5x4x3.25

I'm in the process of building the Classix II's and I veneered mine. I used a maple (matches the furniture) with the 3M backing that I sourced locally and so far, it has turned out pretty well. Going forward I'll probably use that type of veneer on all my MDF projects. You just have to prep the MDF really well beforehand.

Cool, How far along are yours? I am to the point where we need to cut out out the circle and recess for the front port. Decided not to go slot port. Crossovers should get assembled over the 4 week holiday since the crossover boards showed up.

My plan is slightly different, I assume if I buy veneer with no backing I just use contact cement to bond it?

I will have a fade on mine so I am trying to figure out how to do that as well. Finish will have dyed veneer (color), then fading, Hopefully a piano finish on top of it as well. I plan to spend a few weeks on the finish if needed. Lots of test peices, or hopefully just one! Top, sides, front will all be similar. Finish should be like nothing Ive seen before. I want something Im proud of for once and dont have to fake it lol.

I tried the contact cement method once and it didn't come out the way that I liked. So far, the 3M sticky back stuff is doing much better and is proving much easier to work with.

I just need to choose my colors on the stain and front baffle then put everything together. I'm doing a painted front with stained sides. I keep waffling between a white front with light sides or a dark gray front with darker stained sides.

Here's mine veneered and the fronts shellac'd and primed. I kinda liked the natural on white look, but I probably won't finish them like that.

Nice, they look good

I still need to cut out my brace but tonight got the ports cut and the rabbit recess. Also went to parts express for some stuff I forgot today

I plan to veneer the fronts but may have to settle for paint. I'm going to get them playing and then see if I want to go nuts on a finish or a simple finish. Apparently I have 2 extra crossover boards so hey, may a classix ii 4.1 system will happen lol.

Going to be something like this drum but different color.

Oh by the way, the harbor freight drill press circle cutter hates mdf. Almost started a fire lol.

I tried it once with very bad results. Others I know have done it with good results so YMMV.

Your build did inspire me in the finishing process of mine. I want that nice black piano finish to fade into a blue dye'd wood veneer. Only way I can think to do it is to spray paint the edges of the veneer and have it fade into the blue dye. So Maybe grain filler on the entire piece, then the black spray paint fade, then clear coat the whole thing?

Have you ever seen those distressed wood tables that have super dark edges and fade into a lighter center? I want that effect but a deep dark blue in the center. Most people I tell that to are thinking im crazy to do that to wood. But Ive built a lot of things, stained them, and this time I really just want something different than a dark or light stained wood.

Got any example pics? Sounds like that's going to be tricky. Even if you spray the edge of the veneer, it will be hard to hide the solid line as there is a distinct difference in texture...

Might want to go with something a bit more generic, perhaps just staining the veneer completely.. It doesn't have to be light or dark, there are plenty of color and dye options.

I cant quite find any pictures of exactly what I want.

I have sourced blue dyed veneer though.

The picture attached is the closest I can find to the effect. That's a drum that was finished on a record player. I can't quite do that because I want the front, sides, top to all fade to blue in the centers.

I forget if the 2nd pic was your build, I prefer that look over your final finish if it is your build. If I can't get the effect I want then I'll have to do that.

Actually here you go. But I want a deeper blue and more black, then just super glossy.

Forget if I uploaded the 2nd picture already

Like I said, mainly just want something different than reg stain, but I do want wood grain effect. I will have plenty to test methods on. Steel wool or fine sand paper may help with the fade?

I have sourced blue dyed veneer though.

The picture attached is the closest I can find to the effect. That's a drum that was finished on a record player. I can't quite do that because I want the front, sides, top to all fade to blue in the centers.

I forget if the 2nd pic was your build, I prefer that look over your final finish if it is your build. If I can't get the effect I want then I'll have to do that.
Not mine.. this is mine...

Ah ha!

Imagine this with a nice wood grain. Curley maple or something. I never thought to look at guitars as examples till today.

I'd settle for that on both sides with a black top and front even.

yeah I think you could do something like that if you don't end up curving the baffle.

Nope everything is square now.

How would you attempt it?

going to have to fade from black to blue with the dye then clearcoat the crap out of it if you want it to look like the guitar.

you'll need a bunch of test pieces before you get it right, it's not easy

So if I buy the blue dyed veneer, and some black dye, or if they make black stain, lighter coats to heavy from inside to outside edges. But yes, test pieces will be needed lol.

Aaaannnddd, unlike you I have zero success with spraying cleat coat. And no paint spray gun.
